  List of Slaves and Owners

Listings include the name of the slave whenever possible. Aside from the difficulties in locating a name, determining a surname can be complicated. Slaves inherited their legal status from their mother. Common practice assigned a slave the surname of the owner. This could change at the sale of a slave. Or a slave might retain the surname of a previous owner. Children might inherit this surname of a parent's previous owner. Some slaves chose a new surname after emancipation that had no relationship to any past owner.

Since this list is an attempt to match several documents to the same person, errors will understandably occur in this process. These resources are provided as a beginning point. Individual researchers should remain ready to change these interpretations as more information becomes available.

Names on the left side of the listing are the slave when the name is available. Names on the right side are the owner. Hyperlinks are provided to specific documents when available.
