World War II Veterans
from Hyde County

(Researched and donated to the Outer Banks History Center by Edward Royden Clarke, Jr. in May 2018)

Edward Royden “Roy” Clarke, Jr. of Engelhard, North Carolina is the retired chairman and president of East Carolina Bank. He spent approximately twenty years researching the citizens of Hyde County who served in World War II, ultimately documenting about 95% of them.  Clarke also began accumulating personal war biographies on many of the veterans, with hopes of someday writing a book entitled They Came From Hyde. His research was based on personal interviews with the veterans or their family members, military discharge papers, and extensive internet research on all aspects of the history of the war.  This collection includes detailed service information related to more than 600 WWII veterans from Hyde County, North Carolina.  It comprises his research material on Hyde County’s involvement in World War II, largely consisting of photocopies of personal correspondence, photographs, family papers, newspaper articles, military documents, and extensive descriptions of specific battles and military armaments.  A Finder's Aid of Clarke's Papers (1938-2018) was generated by Linda McGowan McQueen in September 2019.  Access this site for the veteran names and the Box #.  Copies of a veteran's file can be purchased from the Outer Banks History Center in Manteo, NC (252-473-2655) or e-mail at obhc@ncdcr.gov for $.10 per page plus shipping and handling which may run $1-$2 if shipped to your home.  The record can also be sent via e-mail to your computer.

Links to obituaries, photos and cemetery notes are from research previously done by John B. McGowan (deceased) and Kay Midgett Sheppard prior to Mr. Clarke's research being donated and has been added to the table below only to give added information on the veteran. Some Abbreviations were used in the table below to save space.  There are also definitions of several of the medals & badges that were awarded.
