Brooks-Cox Cemetery

This cemetery was photographed and submitted by Maldine Whitaker Wallace of St. Louis, MO who says "I visited this African American cemetery in late April 2013.  The sign at the entrance has Brooks-Cox Cemetery.  Some think it is two separate cemeteries; that one side is Brooks Cemetery and the other is Cox Cemetery.   Some graves had grass that I didn’t disturb due to numerous ant hills so my photography session didn’t capture images as well as I would have liked.  My understanding is that there are many more graves without headstones to identify their location. I noticed that several old stones had newer ones also.  After some research, I learned that this is a family cemetery and after looking at some of the death certificates for some of the individuals buried here it becomes more confusing.  Some death certificates have location of burial as Mulberry Ridge Cemetery, some have Cox Cemetery, some Brooks Cemetery, some Lake Landing, some Mulba or Mother Ridge and some list it as family cemetery.  I do know that it is located in Engelhard, Lake Landing Township, Hyde County, North Carolina.  It is just off Mulberry Ridge Road in a small community called Slocum."  Click on underlined names to see a photo of the tombstone.  Information within brackets was taken from birth or death certificates, obituaries, social security cards or other records.
