HYDE COUNTY, NC CHURCHES

Below are listed Hyde County churches of all denominations, past and present. This is not a definitive list. We need your help in compiling information on all of these churches. Please contribute what materials you have on the church histories, pastors, congregations, photos, etc., and send your information to me for inclusion in this table.

This table of churches was kindly submitted by Margie Brooks who has been working on this, off and on, for 10 years.  Unless otherwise noted, Margie and Ed Garrison took all of the photographs.

Note:  The Methodist Episcopal Church, South resulted from the split between the Southern and Northern branches of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States before the Civil War. They reunited in 1939 as The Methodist Church, now named The United Methodist Church.

HENDERLITE MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Currituck Township

Source: Hyde County History - A Hyde County Bicentennial Project; Hyde Co. Historical Society; 1976
in the early 1900s Rev. J.H. Jarvis, as a Presbyterian Missionary, had organized Calvary Church near Swan Quarter.  About 1915 Rev. R.E. Henderlite began missionary work, serving also the church near Makeleyville.  He was a much beloved pastor, and when his health failed ib 1920 everyone was saddened,  He was followed by Revs H.H. Leach and I.N. Clegg.  In 1925 a commission was appointed by the Albemarle Presbytery to organize a church in Currytuck Township.  On Wednesday, Oct. 28th at Rocky Mount the following report was adopted:
"The Commission appointed to organize a church at Currituck Chapel near Scranton, met at the Chapel May 10.  Present: Revs. A.J. Crane, Chairman, H.H. Leach, W.T. Wadley, Elders J.B. Sparrow and C.M. Brown, both of Washington.  Mr. Sparrow was made Clerk.  Revs. R.E. Henderlite and I.N. Clegg both of Fayetteville Presbytery were invited to sit with the commission.  Rev. Mr. Crane preached a sermon from Matt. 16:18, "Upon this rock I will build my church."

The petition for organization was then read.  [Twenty-three people, all named, pledged themselves to become charter members of said church when organized].  The name chosen for the new organization was "Henderlite Memorial" in honor of Rev. R.E. Henderlite who labored earnestly in that community in the past, and the church was then enrolled.  Ministers continued to serve this church until 1940.  The membership increased to 51, however when membership decreased greatly the church was disbanded and the property was sold for a private home which burned shortly afterwards.  The church was originally located between Sladesville and Germanton near the Henry Spencer Store on Germanton Road.  The land was given by Mr. Beamon Watson and the building constructed by the members and other people in the community with Mr. John Sadler as the head carpenter.

NEW LAKE CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Currituck Township

Source: Hyde County History - A Hyde County Bicentennial Project; Hyde Co. Historical Society; 1976
Many families once lived in the New Lake community but at the present time (1976) it is sparsely settled.  The membership of the New Lake Church met in the local school on October 26, 1890 with 26 members and was enrolled by the North Carolina Christian Missionary Convention.  W.J. Dunbar was listed as the first clerk by the congregation.  In 1892 the Church Sunday School was organized with 25 members and 5 teachers, D.B. Squayers, superintendent and C. K. Squayers, secretary.  In 1893 there were 32 members in the Church School, 6 teachers, C.J. Sawyer, superintendent and A.N. Dunbar, church secretary.  Although records are not available, it can be assumed the membership continued to grow because the church was served by ministers periodically over the years.  The last known minister was W.P. Armstrong who served from 1944 to 1948.  The New Lake congregation continued to meet in the local school building and never erected a church building, although Daniel B. Squayers, Caswell J. Squayers, William I. Cahoon, James H. Cahoon, Josephus McGowan as Trustees of the Church of Christ of New Lake had been deeded by Nellie J. Harris, Nancy G. Cahoon, Mary J. Cahoon, William I. Cahoon, James H. Cahoon and Annie E. Cahoon a one-half acre plot of land on September 4, 1894.  No records have been found explaining why the members decided not to erect and why they chose to continue using the school building.  At present the membership is not known but it was reported as 50 in 1961.  Since the congregation had not met for some years prior to that date the correct number might be lower.
