Zion Temple Baptist Church (African-American)
Sladesville, NC

In 1867 about two years after freedom, the citizens of this community known as Sladesville, being overjoyed with the blessing that the Heavenly Father had bestowed upon them as being a free race could now praise their Maker to their own will and pleasure. The Rev. Aaron Jones was their leader, and the first Zion Temple Church was erected on the spot it now sits.  Not sure how long they worshiped in the original church, but they were not satisfied , so a great effort was put forth to build the current church.

The faithful pastor that have served were: Reverends John C. Chance, Aaron Jones, George Barrow Sr, George Barrow Jr, Miles Douglas, David Willis, W.L.O. Booner, Lonsar Douglas, H.J. Gibbs, C.C. Gillette, Z. Barrow, S.D. Manvel, J.A. Mackey, N.H. Hassell, J.D. Williams, H. Reddick, N.D. Moore and H.B. Midgette. 

The Late Deacons were: S.L. Gray, Hanable Sawyer, Elijah Gray Sr, Natham Harper, Robert Howard, Willie Taylor, Bryant Cooper, Lonnie O’Neal, S.P. Gray, John Ander Gray, J.H. Gray, Elijah Howard, Ankery Gibbs, C.C. Dillahunt and W.T. Gray.

The faithful Mothers that have served: Elsie Anderson, Mariah Howard, Caroline Respress, George Ann Moore, Cloe Credle, Alice Howard, Eliza Standle, Alice Silverthorne, Ida Cooper, Eliza Gray, Florence Jordan, Lillie Davis, Olivia Howard and Gertrude.
