The Freedmen's Savings and Trust Company, more popularly known as
the Freedmen's Bank, was established by Congress in 1865 with the
original intention of assisting former slaves and African American
Soldiers in handling and saving money. During the time of its
operation, the bank was a place where thousands of people opened
accounts to deposit the money that they were now earning for the
work that they were doing for the very first time in their lives.
Unfortunately, due to mismanagement and fraud the bank collapsed in
1874 and the more than 57 million dollars deposited there were
completely lost, adding another sad chapter to the legacy of
slavery. However, the records they left behind as part of the
creation of those accounts, can be a gold mine for those researching
their ancestors, and some of them are what is included in this list
of depositors from the Bank Registers who indicated that they had
been born or lived in Granville County, North Carolina.
