William Dowdy Perry

William Dowdy Perry
Born: December 11, 1872 Colington, NC
Died: August 23, 1951 Wanchese, Dare Co., NC
Buried: Cudworth Cemetery, Wanchese, NC

William Dowdy Perry was the son of Josiah D. Perry and his 2nd wife, Lavinia Crank.  William was one of the 4 infant children named in Lavinia's petition for a partition of the sale of Josiah's land in 1882.  In the 1880 Currituck Co. census (Crawford Twp.) William was listed as age 7.  He married Martha Jane Williams in Currituck County on October 17, 1893.  Martha had previously been married to Caleb Crank in July 1881.  This Dare County marriage certificate indicates that Martha's father was Pharoah O'Neal and her mother was Julia Brice [Julia was a Williams by birth but had married George Percival Delencles Brice in 1871].  It is believed that Pharoah O'Neal & Julia Williams were never married.  Martha Jane and Caleb Crank had a daughter named Lillie (or Lyida) Crank and a son named Elmer E. Crank.
Martha Jane apparently died before 1899 because in October of that year William Dowdy Perry married for the 2nd time to Mary Roten Baum who was the widow of James Riley Johnson.  William D. and Mary Perry were living in the Poplar Branch Twp. of Currituck Co. in 1900 & 1910 along with several of her children from the previous marriage and two children of their own--Minnie M. & Mamie Levenia.  Minnie was born in Currituck Co. on Aug. 6, 1900 and died Oct. 13, 1957.  She married William Bradford Allcox.  Mamie Levenia was born in Currituck Co. on May 23, 1902 and died March 10, 1989.  She married Willie Roswell Etheridge, Sr. and both are buried in the Cudworth Cemetery in Wanchese, NC.  A search of the 1920 and 1930 census have not turned up William Dowdy Perry and his wife Mary Baum Perry.  A Nov. 12, 1943 Dare County Times newspaper article did have Mary's obituary which reads:
MRS. MARY R. PERRY DIES IN NORFOLK - Funeral services for Mrs. Mary R. Perry, 84, who died early Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.B. Allcox in Norfolk, after a long illness, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Wanchese Methodist Church by Rev. James W. Sneeden and Rev. D.B. Lawrence. Burial was made in the Cudworth Cemetery. Pallbearers were Caleb Brickhouse of Wanchese, Edward Allcox, Charlie Allcox, Harold Perry and Linwood Everett of Norfolk, and Vernon Johnson, Jr. of Charleston, SC. Mrs. Perry is survived by four daughters: Mrs. W.B. Allcox of Norfolk, Mrs. W.J. Swain of Harbinger, Mrs. George Payne of Stumpy Point and Mrs. W.R. Etheridge of Wanchese; one son, S.T. Johnson of Charleston, SC; several nieces and nephews and several grandchildren.
