Hexe "Fitts:George Collins (1849-1914)" married Martha Anne "Pattie" Claibornexe "Claiborne:Martha Anne Pattie\" (1855-1930)\"" in Warren Co., NC, October 29, 1878.  Marthaxe "Claiborne:Martha Anne Pattie\" (1855-1930)\"" was born in Warren Co., NC August 25, 1855.  Martha was the daughter of William Henry Claibornexe "Claiborne:William Henry (1823-dec.)" and Lucy A. Nicholsonxe "Nicholson:Lucy A. (ABT 1833-dec.)".  Marthaxe "Claiborne:Martha Anne Pattie\" (1855-1930)\"" died February 26, 1930.  Roberta Fitts Marshall referenced a little book on the Claiborne family which was in the possession of Grandma "Pattie."  A copy of this book is NOT on file with the Warrenton library and no one in the family has it. It may have gone out with the items in Annie Fitts Lamm's house (Oliver Fitts home in Warrenton) after her death.

In 1900, George Collins Fitts, Jr. b. 1884, (son of Martha Claiborne & George C. Fitts Sr.) was called "nephew" and in household of W. L. Perkinson. If Perkinson was correctly an uncle, the only opening for this relationship would be that Martha Claiborne had a sister who married W. L. Perkinson. The old Fitts homestead on Oakville Road was later owned by a Perkinson family. A cursory search of Perkinson records has not yielded a Perkinson-Claiborne marriage.

George was appointed Mathew Drake, his uncle, as guardian in 1860 after his father and mother died. He is shown in Mathew M. Drake's home in 1860 and is age 11. Court records show he was appointed William Caswell Drake as his guardian in 1865, after the death of Matthew M. Drake. George went to California for two years to look for gold, returning in 1876. He was elected Sheriff of Warren County in 1883, but lost all his properties inherited from his father when he lost the election in 1886 and his properties had been held to protect sureties. George farmed his former lands by renting them but was never able to redeem then. George wasn't of age until after the Civil War, when he would have received his distribution from his mother's estate. This was most probably the farmhouse now known as "Wayside Farm," where George and Pattie lived in 1880s.

In 1880, George and Pattie A. are in the Six Pound Dist., Warren Co., NC (p. 22), with daughter Caroline E. Fitts, age 10 months. George is a farmer and Pattie keeping house. There were enumerated next to Carolyn M. Twitty, Pattie's great great aunt, who was age 75 and had her 'grandson' Joshua P. Twitty, 26, living with her (he would have been her deceased husband's grandson by his first wife, Susan Fitts). "Wayside Farm" is on Warren Plains Road. (Warren Plains Methodist Church is on the right; the house is located between Norlina and Warren Plains, going east. It's a 2-story with siding and several additions were in the back in 1998. One out building called the "tramp house" is by the railroad tracks and the owner had hung a sign: "George C. Fitts, Sheriff") George and Pattie were in Roanoke Rapids by 1900, when George ran a boarding house.

The 1900 census shows his son, George Jr., living in Warren Co. with his 'uncle,' R. L. Perkinson. George Sr. was working for the police department in 1910. His rented home was on Jackson Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC, in 1910 census.

In her will, Caroline Mary Nicholson Twitty named the children of George C. Fitts and his wife Pattie, with the residue of the estate to be divided between nephews and nieces of her brothers Lemuel and James. (David G. Gammon, Abstracts of Wills of Warren Co. NC) She was a great aunt to Pattie Claiborne Fitts and living next to them in 1880.

George and Pattie are buried at the Warrenton Cemetery. (Fairview/Old Warren Cemetery, N158 toward Norlina from Warrenton, left on Fairlane Drive, enter gate, 2nd right, Fitts plot on right)

Jamesxe "Fitts:James Henry (1836-1861)" served in the military in the Civil War.  It is not known whether James was born in Warren Co., NC or Mecklenburg Co., VA. James would be the male under age 5 in his father's 1840 household in Warren Co., NC. James is shown at age 15 in the 1850 census of Warren County with William Hooper, 57, a Baptist Minister; also in the household are 21 individuals, including a Henry Fitts, age 17 (probably the son of Oliver Duke Fitts). James H. Fitts is shown as age 15, a student. This was probably a school arrangement. His uncle (mother's brother), Joseph Speed Jones, was sheriff and living in the Sandy Creek District in 1850. Nathan Milam was James' guardian; Milam had married James' aunt, Elizabeth Fitts.

Marriage license & permit dated June 12, 1855 was granted in Dinwiddie Co., VA by C. A. Hargrove, Clerk. James H., 24, Frances, 23, William J. 4, and Henry 2, are shown in 1860 Mecklenburg Co., VA. James' real estate was valued at $12,000 and personal estate at $25,000.

James kept a book of events, income & expenses, particularly of slave holdings. Known as the James Fitts Commonplace Book, it is held at the Virginia Historical Society. The following excerpt was transcribed by Alexs P. Turner, Jr.: Leaf #41 front side, "Remarkable events" Wm Jones Fitts was born 31 st May 1856 7o'ck am" "Snow fell the 19th day November 1857" "Ice & Frost 2 October 1858" "Henry Bird Fitts born Sept 19th 2/o'clock am 1858"

James wrote his will on the eve that he left to join with the NC volunteers CSA in April, 1861. He named his uncle Nathan Milan saying Milan was his guardian and like a father to him. James died two months later on his wedding anniversary at Petersburg, leaving a widow and three young sons. (James Harris Fitts, Fitts Family, Ft. Orange Press, Tuscaloosa, AL; 1850 census Warren Co., NC; notes of Douglas C. Fitts, 1999)

James H. Fitts of Mecklenburg Co., Virginia, will dtd April 20, 1861, probate August Court, 1862, Warren Co., NC, "Being about to leave on an expedition in discharge of my duty..." All my affairs are to be placed in the hands of my uncle Joseph S. Jones of Warren County, and he is to see that my former guardian Nathan Milam (who has been to me as my own father) is paid what I owe him. Everything else I leave to my darling wife Fanny M. Fitts for her lifetime or widowhood, and at her marriage or death, my uncle Joseph S. Jones is to hold it for my children to be divided between them when they are twenty-one. My uncle is to have perfect control of my property. I pray my wife not to be influenced by any living mortal to interpose any objections to the execution of this will. I wish her to marry again if she thinks it will make her any happier, but I know that any man who would be influenced by what little property I may have behind me is not worthy of her and I don't want her to have him. To my child Willie – my watch. To my son Henry - a gold locket containing the daguerreotype..."

James enlisted as a Private on 18 April 1861 in Warren County at the age of 24, in Company F, 12th Infantry Regiment North Carolina. He died on 14 June 1861 in Petersburg, VA. Marriage license granted March 6, 1866, Warren Co., NC. (Brent H. Holocomb, "Marriages of Warren & Bute Cos.," 1991) This is probably the J.M. Fitts at Merry Mount, Warren Co. NC in 1860.

1870 census, Palmer Springs, Mecklenburg Co., VA. 1880 census shows James, 35, b. VA, a farmer, with wife Bettie T., 34, b. NC, and children: William H., 8, Edward P., 7, Caroline, 5, and Charles H., 2, all children born in NC. An Elisabeth Crowder, 41, servant, is living in the household.

NOTE: Where did the middle name "Plummer" come from for Lalla and Edward??  James' sister married Edward Hall Plummer, but that would not normally be a relationship close enough to use for naming children. Elizabeth had family members who married Plummer, but cannot be found in her direct line. It is very possible that James’ mother’s family may have a Plummer connection in Mecklenburg Co., VA.
