His obituary appeared as follows: CONOVER - Carlton R. Travis, 85, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at Brian Center in Viewmont. Born Jan. 27, 1921, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Noah Allen and Effie Mae Kanipe Travis. He retired from Southern Furniture and was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Newton. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in Europe and the Pacific Theater. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 11 brothers, Emmett, Roby, John, Martin Luther, Sam, Joe, Mernie, Opie, William, Gail, and Gordon Travis; and three sisters, Margaret Brewer, Mae Parlier, and Eunice Harbin. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Catherine R. Travis of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine Abernethy and husband, Harold, of Conover, and Talitha Edwards and husband, Michael, of Claremont; four grandchildren, Ernie Abernethy, Sharon A. Keiger, Toni Travis and Terry Edwards; great-grandchildren, Justin and Alani Keiger, Kara and Kailey Travis, and Hannah Edwards; three sisters, Charlotte Cranford of Newton, Louise Lester of Conover and Mary London and husband, Leroy, of Kannapolis; and a brother, Glenn Travis of Newton. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church. The Rev. Ralph Abernethy III will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by members of American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the church, and at other times the family will be at the residence of Harold and Elaine Abernethy, 1332 Normandy St., Conover. She was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church and retired from Southern Furniture Co. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton R. Travis; four brothers, Charles Roseman, Robert Roseman, J.D. Roseman and Pete Roseman; and one sister, Bertie Benge. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine Abernethy and husband, Harold, of Conover, and Talitha "T" Edwards and husband, Michael, of Catawba; sister, Barbara Edwards of Newton; grandchildren, Ernie Abernethy, Sharon A. Keiger, Toni Travis and Terry Edwards; and great-grandchildren, Justin and Alani Keiger, Kara and Kailey Travis and Hannah Edwards. A service of remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Newton, with the Rev. Ralph Abernethy officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the sanctuary prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight, Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Newton.
