NEWSOM - I am looking for information about the family of Moses Newsom, who moved to Northampton Co. about 1744 from Southampton Co. VA. I believe he died about 1766 and had a son Moses. I beleive he may have been a REV War soldier and died in 1805. These are the Newsoms listed in Northampton Co. census records in 1800 and 1810. 1800 NC Census Index Northampton Co: Amos, Booth, Ethredred, James (2), Jesse, Moses Jr and Moses Sr, Nathaniel and Sarah. 1810 NC Census Index Northampton Co: Amos, Benjamin, Henry, James, Joel, Moses, Nathaniel, and Semore. The actual 1810 census record on MF does not give an age breakdown for these Newsoms. The first Moses Newsom was white and a land owner, as were his descendants. In some states, non-whites were often not listed in census and could not own land. Does anyone have any information on these Newsoms. Mary Alice Newsom Dell

TARVER, SMITH - Still seeking information on the TARVER family who lived in Northampton Co., around the time of the Revolution. According to family manuscript, BENJAMIN TARVER's father "died about the close of the Revolutionary War. My father (i.e. the above Benjamin) being the youngest son, in a few years the care of his mother and family devolved upon him, the other brothers having left." The only other brother's name given is JOHN TARVER, who became a Methodist minister. The above BENJAMIN was surety for the marriage bond in Greensville Co., VA, for his sister-in-law, LUCY SMITH, to JOHN McHOLLAND (MAHOLLAND) in 1785. Witness was his future wife, HANER (sic) [Hannah] SMITH. The SMITH family, according to this manuscript, lived in Brunswick Co., VA...so the two families probably lived close to the VA-NC border????? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Will share a copy of the 36 pg manuscript if anyone is interested. Bob Carver

SCOTT, BRAY - I'm seeking information on my ancestors Peter Bray and Martha Scott. Martha's father was Abraham Scott, a "free man of color" born around 1710. Peter was reportedly a "red-headed Englishman." I wonder if Peter was one of Dr. Thomas Bray's missionaries who came to NC to educate the slaves and convert them to Christianity. I wonder if Abraham was ever a slave or if he was a native American. Though my Bray ancestors moved to Surry Cty, NC and "became" white, I suspect I will need Afro-American resources to solve these mysteries. I live in East Tennesee and will gladly to TN research in exchange to anyone who can help me research these Scotts and Peter Bray.
