William Cooper Stewart was born to William and Rita Stewart on September 2, 1922, in Parker, Pennsylvania, a small town in the mountains of western Pennsylvania. He died on May 15, 2008, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard, who was not only a brother but a dear and life-long friend. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Ellie, who was his faithful companion and trusted soulmate. He also leaves four loving daughters and their husbands and companions, Susan (Gregg Bryant), Cindy (Jeff Klum),
Sarah (Jim Liddy) and Nancy (Dave Anderson), and six grandchildren, Matthew, Andy, Tim, Rob, Adrienne and Scott.
Bill left Parker for his undergraduate education at the University of Michigan, then entered medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. After receiving his medical degree in 1943, he served in the United States Army as a flight surgeon. He returned to Ann Arbor for his pediatric training and was Chief Resident at the University of Michigan Medical Center during the years 1950-52. After practicing general pediatrics in Kalamazoo, Michigan for 20 years, he and Ellie and their two youngest daughters moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where Bill completed a
fellowship in neonatology and was among the first group of physicians board certified in neonatology. He started the neonatal unit at Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo, Michigan, which he named the Special Care Nursery, a title that reflected what he felt about his young patients and their families–that they were beloved and truly special.
In 1978, Bill and Ellie moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, where Bill started his second neonatal unit and continued to provide care for the smallest and most vulnerable infants. The last ten years of his professional career, Bill focused on another of his professional interests, developmental pediatrics. His Wilmington-based practice was dedicated to the care of children with attention deficit disorder and other neurobehavioral challenges. Ellie, a speech pathologist, joined him professionally during this phase of his career, providing speech, behavioral and school consultation services to complement the medical care provided by Bill.
Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He loved fall partridge hunting in the northern Michigan woods, fishing, sailing, camping and downhill skiing. However, his life-long passion was golf. He was a  member of the University of Michigan Golf Team during his undergraduate years, and followed that elusive white ball around many, many
courses. He shot an 87 last summer, respectable for an 85-year-old, and that is no fish story!
Bill lived a life of service. He gave nothing but the best medical care to his young patients. He served God in many ways, as a Stephen Ministry leader, Sunday School teacher and member of Kiwanis. He lived to make the world a better place, and his values and appreciations will live on in those who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions made to Starr Commonwealth, 13725 Starr Commonwealth Road, Albion, Michigan, 49224. In keeping with Bill’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date this summer.

Barrett, Geraldine Powell, 86, of Blue Heron Drive, Porters Neck, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter. Arrangements will be announced by Wilmington Burial and Cremation Service.
Published in the Star-News on 5/29/2008.

Geraldine Powell Barrett died at 12:15 in Wilmington, N.C., on the morning of May 28, 2008.
Born October 9, 1921, in Wake County, to the late William Herbert and Mary Dewey Powell, she was eighty-six at the time of her death.
Elegant yet engaged, strong-willed yet giving, proud yet humble, Jerry packed a six-shooter as a young girl and rode with Tom Mix and Tim McCoy nearly every Saturday at the nickel movies. A true redhead later affectionately known as "brick-top," she went on to be the teenager most "checked" by the roving pairs of home-visiting boys of her day. She danced the meanest jitterbug, always in the middle of the ballroom, always with her dance card full, until a French teacher's match-making made her known to a cross-town rival high school fellow named Charles Francis, "Charlie," Barrett. They met and her dance card held only one name from then until now, nearly 65 years of that time as husband and wife.
Jerry raised three sometimes rambunctious boys, giving them her strong sense of fairness, dignity, honesty and the capacity to become unique human beings in their own right. She also taught grammar school, and became the most sought-after event decorator at every church and community institution she ever joined. Her artistry with flowers, greenery, home furnishings, and fine art arrangements was renowned.
She was a woman of striking beauty, decided tastes and opinions, warm affection, keen intelligence, grace and compassion who worked through many volunteer channels over the years to help those who were less fortunate than she.
Through it all she continued to love, inspire and nurture her husband Charlie; her three sons Chuck (and wife Melody), David (and wife Barbara), and Tom (and wife Sharon). Jerry is also survived by her grandsons Robb and Jeremey (and wife Heather) and three great-grandsons, Gabriel, Iain, and Judah.
The family and friends will celebrate her life and faith at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2008, at the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk Presbyterian Church, 2 W. Fayetteville Street, Wrightsville Beach, NC.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 2222 S 17th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.

Clarence Louis Cade, 94, died peacefully on May 25, 2008. Respected by all who knew him, loved and cherished by his family, he was to the very end of his life the essence of a true gentleman. He will forever be remembered for the dignity and grace that were the hallmarks of his character.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois, Mr. Cade graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Chicago in 1934. After finding his first job as a salesman with Armour and Company and then with the Burnette Company during the height
of the Depression, Mr. Cade joined the newly formed Social Security Administration and moved to Washington, DC, shortly before US entry into World War II. In 1944, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the US Navy and served as a personnel officer at the Naval Gun Factory in Washington, working to marshal the efforts of the large civilian workforce there. After the war, with two young daughters in tow, he and his wife moved to Montreal, where he had found a job as director of personnel for ICAO, the International Civil Aviation Organization, a branch of the newly founded United Nations, which had been located in Canada as one of the few parts of that organization not at headquarters in New York. Mr. Cade qualified for that position in part because he spoke fluent French, which he had learned in four years of high school French classes taught by a native speaker from Paris. In 1952, wanting to educate his daughters in their home country, he and his family returned to his native Midwest and settled in Mariemont, OH.
Mr. Cade served as Administrative officer of the United States Public Health Service facility, first known as the Taft Sanitary Engineering Center, and later as the National Center for Urban and Industrial Health. He lived in Mariemont from 1952 to 1994. He and his wife, Charlotte Pettersen Cade, long a Latin and English teacher at Mariemont High School, reared their four daughters in the village and celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary there before Mrs. Cade's death in 1993.
After his first wife's death, Mr. Cade spent the final years of his life in North Carolina, where he had built a family cottage at Pine Knoll Shores on the Outer Banks. He married a friend from that area, Newell Haller. There he indulged his love for boats and fishing until 2001, when he and Newell moved to Plantation Village in Wilmington, NC.
He is survived by Newell, his daughters Barbara Cade Pringle and husband Robert of Alexandria, VA; Jane Cade Theobald and husband Ronald of Cincinnati, OH; Kathryn Elizabeth Cade and partner Frederick Miller of Boston, MA, and Susan Cade McGuinn and husband Michael of Denver, CO, as well as by his eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A private celebration of his life is planned for early summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CARE, 151 Ellis Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30303; The Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Alexandria, VA 22203; or the University of Chicago College Fund, 1116 East 59th Street, Chicago, IL 60637.
