Jimmy was born in Fort Payne, Alabama.

The family also lived in Marion, Alabama; Knoxville, Tennessee and Nashville, Tennessee before moving to Fort Payne in December of 1951.

Jimmy entered the first grade of school in September, 1956 at Forrest Avenue Elementary School in Fort Payne.

Jimmy was stricken by a brain tumor in the spring of 1957 while in the first grade.

After treatment was accomplished in Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Jimmy returned to his class and started the second grade in the fall.

His condition grew worse.  Jimmy insisted on going to school and to church even when he had to be carried and was not physically able to attend.  His body was stricken with paralysis and he suffered pain.

Some three weeks before his life ended, he took part in a school play in chapel and before the PTA.  His classmates compensated for his difficulty in moving his feet by moving him around him to complete the activity.

Jimmy’s mind was clear and bright even after three surgical procedures.

Jimmy attended the First Baptist Church in Fort Payne.  He expressed his faith and asked to be baptized.  He was baptized on November 10, 1957 at the age of seven years and nine moths, by Reverend Bob Mowrey.

The story of Jimmy’s last few months of life is an epic of courage, characters and determination well remembered by his family and friends.  He appeared to have wisdom and understanding that exceeded his years.

A few months before his own death, he was informed of the passing of his cousin, Patricia Plyler.  Jimmy calmly said that Jesus needed Pat, so He just took her with Him.

Jimmy died in Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.  His parents and his pastor, Reverend Bob Mowrey and Mrs. Mowrey, were with him.

Jimmy was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Fort Payne near his grandfather Harris and his cousin, Patricia.

The funeral was conducted by Reverend Mowrey and Reverend Ralph Ables.

Jimmy’s cousin, Reverend Sam Coker of Atlanta, conducted a graveside service.  Pallbearers were Reverend Coker and Jimmy’s uncles, James Erskine Harris, Sam Harris and Joe Harris.

Johnny was an experienced railway locomotive engineer for the Southern Railway System.

According to a family story, Johnny has expressed a premonition of impending trouble as he chatted with some friends in the yard of his church.

This was the first Sunday in August of 1916.  The next Wednesday, August 9, 1916, Johnny and his train crew were standing in a station in Georgia, receiving and discharging passengers.

Suddenly, they became aware of another train that had wrongfully entered the track block with their own train.  This train was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Immediately, Johnny and his fireman set their train in motion in the direction away from the oncoming train.  They were backing their train away from the freight train.

They increased their speed as rapidly as possible so as to lessen the impact between the two trains.

Johnny order his firemen to jump.  He did and was not seriously injured.  The crew of the approaching freight train also jumped.

No person was injured in that wreck except for the engineer, Johnny Harris.  He was unable to escape the collision.  He was killed.

His action was one of duty, courage and self-denial of heroic proportions.

d125     ZILPAH (ZELPHA) R. HARRIS; b. circa 1794; d. after October 24, 1863.

712

Zelpha was born in Warren County, North Carolina.  Her exact date of birth and date of death are not known to the writer.

The name Zilpah is from the Bible.  Zilpah was the mother of Gad and Asher, sons of Jacob.

Zelpha’s family migrated to Greene County, Georgia in 1797.  By 1808 this family had moved to the next county south, Hancock County, Georgia.  The family lived in the Shoulderbone community of Hancock County.

Zelpha married Collin Sledge on December 13, 1808 in Hancock County, Georgia.

Collin was born about 1786 in North Carolina.  Collin was the son of John and Amy Chappell Sledge. [7]

This Sledge family has also migrated from Virginia to North Carolina and then to Hancock County, Georgia.  After living in Hancock County, many of this family moved westward to Troup County, Georgia and even further to the west.  More information concerning this Sledge family is found in the Appendix, pages 781-789, TIES BETWEEN THE HARRIS, SLEDGE, AND CLARKE (CLARK) FAMILIES.

Some of Collin’s brothers moved to Troup County, Georgia and established their homes near La Grange.

The grandfather of Collin Sledge was also named John Sledge.  The great-grandfather of Collin Sledge was Charles Sledge of Surry County, Virginia.  The will of Charles Sledge was probated February 6, 1726.

Land activity by Collin Sledge included the following: he purchased land on Shoulderbone Creek, Hancock County, in 1799; he purchased land in Putnam County (next county west and across the Oconee River) in 1805 and in 1807; he sold land on Shoulderbone Creek to his brother, Mins Sledge, on December 5, 1808.  This was a week before he married Zelpha.  Collin sold his land in Putnam County in 1811.

Collin owned land in Twiggs County, Georgia by 1818.  Collin and Zelpha were living in Twiggs County by about that time.

Zelpha received her share of her father’s estate on February 10, 1821.

Collin died in Twiggs County, in 1826.  Twiggs County Courthouse records were destroyed by fire about 1901. [8]

Zelpha purchased a land lot (202.5 acres) in Pike County, Georgia on February 11, 1834. The land was purchased from Stephen K. Crawley.  Francis M. Sledge, son of Zelpha witnessed this transaction.  This Land Lot 92, District 3, is located in the Liberty Hill community of present day Lamar County, Georgia.  The land is located about 3 miles south of the home occupied, at that time, by Zelpha’s sister and brother-in-law, Judge John H. and Hixsey Harris Akins.

Zelpha married Thomas Cauthen on August 13, 1846 in Pike County, Georgia.  Thomas died in 1855.  His will, probated in Monroe County, Georgia, named Zelpha as his wife.  Zelpha purchased 50 acres of land, located in the southeast corner of Land Lot 125, 6th Land District of Fayette County, Georgia on October 24, 1863.  This was a public auction of the estate of Stephen A. King, deceased.  This is the last record found of Zelpha.
