US Pension Record (partial): General Affadavit taken Nov. 4, 1891 - John G. Ballance states that he is 44 years old and a resident of Hatteras, NC; that he enlisted in Co. H, 1st Regiment of NC Infantry on Aug. 19, 1864 and was honorably discharged June 27, 1865
General Affadavit taken Nov. 25, 1897 - C.B. Stowe, age 52 & resident of Hatteras, states that he served with John G. Ballance in the war and has lived near him since his discharge and for the last 10 years has heard Ballance complain of heart trouble and severe pains in his back in the region of his kidneys. He is unable to perform any kind of manual labor for support of himself.
Nov. 12, 1912 - John G. Ballance, age 65 & resident of Beaufort, Carteret Co., NC, states that he enrolled at New Bern, NC on Aug. 12, 1864 as a private in Co. H and was honorably discharged at New Bern on June 27, 1865. At the time of his enlistment he was 5’8" tall, had a dark complexion, light grey eyes and black hair; that his occupation was a fisherman; that he was born May 4, 1847 at Hatteras, NC; that since leaving the service he has lived at Hatteras until 1906 then at Beaufort, NC.
April 21, 1913 - Letter from Jno. Forlaw, Notary Public stating that he has examined the family record for proof of John G. Ballance’s birth. It is as follows: Parents: Merchant Ballance, b. Dec. 10, 1802, Mary Ballance, b. Dec. 9, 1807; Children: Adah B. Ballance, b. Nov. 4, 1828, Elenor L. Ballance, b. July 7, 1839, William A. Ballance, b. Dec. 27, 1845, Jno. G. Ballance, b. May 4, 1847.
Feb. 26, 1914 - Pensioner dropped from rolls because of death on Feb. 12, 1914 at Beaufort, NC.
Mar. 14, 1914 - Declaration for Widow’s Pension: Rebecca W. Ballance, age 51 & resident of Beaufort, NC states that she is the widow of John G. Ballance; that she married him under the name of Rebecca W. Gaskins at Hatteras on Jan. 21, 1882 by John W. Rolinson, J.P.; that neither she nor her husband had been previously married.
Sept. 18, 1914—Proof of Burial: Leon Rice, undertaker in Beaufort, NC states that he prepared and buried the body of John G. Ballance in Ocean View Cemetery in Beaufort, NC of Feb. 12, 1914 and that the said Ballance died Feb. 12, 1914 at Beaufort, NC.

US Pension Record (partial): Aug. 26, 1882 - Delaration for Original Pension for Hezekiah F. Barnett, age 38 & resident of Buxton, states he enrolled on Mar. 15, 1863 in Co. H commanded by Edward C. Manning and was honorably discharged at New Bern on July 12, 1865; that he is 5’10" tall, has light hair and complexion, and blue eyes; that while in the line of duty at Fort Hatteras on or about Jan. 6, 1864 he contracted lung disease with hemorrhage caused by exposure while crossing from Ocracoke to Portsmouth, NC in an open boat; that he was in the hospital at Fort Hatteras from Jan. 6, 1864 and 2 months following and at different time during his term of service. Invalid Pension Filed: Sept. 23, 1882 (#852.436).
Aug. 13, 1883 - War Dept., Adjutant General’s Office: Hezekiah Barnet, a private of Co. H was enrolled on May 1, 1863 at Hatteras Banks and is reported on the muster roll of said company to June 30, 1863; present and so reported to Apr. 30, 1864; May & June of 1864 absent on detached service doing guard duty at Ocracoke; July & Aug. 1864 present and so reported to Apr. 30, 1865; mustered out with said company June 24, 1865 at New Bern, NC as a private. Regimental return for Jan. 4, 1864 does not report him absent. No evidence of alleged disability.
Apr. 7, 1892 - Declaration for Invalid Pension: Barnett, age 45 & resident of Buxton, states that he is unable to earn support by reason of Lung disease, partial loss of eyesight and general disability. Mar. 6, 1907 - Pensioner Dropped from Roll Hezekiah Barnett, pensioner, who was last paid at $12.00 to Feb. 4, 1907, has been dropped because of death on Feb. 19, 1907. Minor Filed for Pension: Dec. 26, 1908 (#703.200).
