NOTES: James was a Private in the Union Army from 1863-1865 at 
Beaufort, NC.  He was 6 tall, dark complexion and hazel eyes.  Prior 
to the war, he was a farmer.  He was in skirmishes around New Bern, 
NC and was wounded twice. He lost an index finger and was shot 
through the right leg just above the ankle joint.  He was transferred 
from the 2nd Regt. to the 1st Reg't NC Volunteers (Union) at Ft. Macon 
in Feb. 1865.  After the war they lived at Leachville in Beaufort County 
where James worked as a miller (laborer ar grist mill).  He was also a 
windmill operator.  This information is from the war department when 
he was trying to get a pension due to ill health.
