NOTE: The Alabama Mortality Schedule of 1850 for Persons Who Died During the Year Ending June 30, 1850 lists: Marion Cty, AL - Beat #5, Dist #13: Samuel McGouner, 42, Male, born NC - died October - Cause of Death - unknown - sick 21 days. The above census was taken on Oct. 18, 1850, which may explain why Samuel is listed at the end of the family, and his wife Sarah (Markham) McGowen is listed as head of household.
NOTE: Samuel McGowen was a Baptist preacher and was pastor of the Salem Baptist Church in Oktibbeha Co., MS in 1848. (Pat Weston)
NOTE: Jesse A. McGowen, Frank M. McGowen and Joseph W. McGowan all served in the Confederate Army in Mississippi during the Civil War. Frank and Joseph appear in the 1870 census of Oktibbeha Co., MS. Jesse had moved to Texas.

NOTE: By 1860, Sarah had moved her family to Walker County, just to the east of Marion County. It isn't known just who the parents of the two youngest children, John S. McGowen and George B. McGowen, were, however, it may well have been one of the girls of this family. George Buchannan McGowan next appears in the 1900 census of Fayette Co., AL. Nothing more is known about John S. McGowen.
