ROAD ORDERS

August Court 1798
Ordered that the hands belonging to the following persons work on the road from the Burnt mill to the dry pond branch under THOMAS TABB Overseer, vizt;
JAMES TURNER, HENRY WEAVER, DANIEL MASON, JOSEPH PARSONS, DANIEL WELDON, JAMES A. TABB, THOMAS TABB, JOHN PUGHE, JOHN GRINSTEAD, TYREL HARPER, JOHN JUDKINS, WILLIAM WHITFIELD, JOHN ROACH, JOSHUA JONES, JAMES JONES, WILLIAM EDMONDSON, THOMAS KELLY, JOY GARY, JETHROE LASSITER, DAVID DAY, BENJAMIN WILLIAMS, WILLIAM PERKINS, JAMES DEMPSEY, URIAH DEMPSEY, PTOLEMY HEATHCOCK, LUCY HEATHCOCK, RICHARD FRANCIS, BURREL FRANCIS, WILLIAM MANLEY, DAVID HAWKINS, HENRY HAWKINS and LEWIS RUDD.

August Court 1800
Ordered that the hands of the following persons together with themselves work on the Road from Sherrods Red Hill to Halifax Town under LEMUEL LONG, overseer, WILLIAM HARRIS, MATTHEW SETTLES, ROBERT CHAVIUS, JOSEPH LANTERN & Sons, JOHN HARMON, _____ DALES, his sons & sons in law, ALSTON C. JONES & Son, and likewise the hands of WM. LONG at the Quankey Plantation.


August Court 1800
TYRREL HARPER is appointed overseer of the new road from JAMES JONES to the Mush Island Road and the following persons together with their hands are appointed to work thereof under the said overseer vizt- RANDOL CARTER, JAMES DEMPSEY, JOSEPH DEMPSEY, URIAH DEMPSEY, SAMUEL DUFFY, BURREL FRANCIS, RICHARD FRANCIS, HENRY HAWKINS, SOLOMON HAWKINS, CARTER HEATHCOCK, JOHN JUDKINS, BRACKET JONES, JAMES JONES, WM MANLEY, JOHN MEDLIN, JAMES POWELL, JAMES PERRY, LEWIS RUDD, DAVID STAFFORD, WILLIAM WHITFIELD, WM. HEATHCOCK, EDWARD HATHCOCK, & BASSETT STITH

Ordered that CHARLES ISLES be appointed Overseer of the road from Moss old place to Rispass old place and that the hands of the following persons work under him on said road: BENJA' EDMUNDS, ELISABETH JOHNSTON's, FRANCIS PRICE's, WM. PRICE's, DAVID CRAWLEY JUN'R, WILLIAM PRITCHETT's, two blacksmiths, RAWLINGS, BENJAMIN MILES, JOHN RYALS, STEPHEN LYNCH's, HENRY KIRBY'S and ELIAS DICKENS.


November Court 1823
Ordered that JESSE BRANCH be appointed Overseer the road leading from RICE B. PIERCE's to DAVID DAY's in stead of NATHANIEL PIERCE and that the following hands work under him on said road: NAT. PIERCE, THOROGOOD DEMPSEY, JOS. BRANCH, JOS. GAY, CHARLES GAY, JOS. HAWKINS, CARTER HARRISON, WILLIAM FRANCIS, WILLIAM HATHCOCK, HART. HATHCOCK, JAMES FAUCETT, HENRY SPEAR and JAMES DEMPSEY JUN'R.

JOHN ROAN Overseer of the road from BLICKS to WOODS ought share JOHN MEADOWS hands, ISAAC RICHARDSON's, WILL YERBEY, WILL SYKES, W. WOODS and HUDSON ROBERTSON's.


February Court 1824
Ordered that ELIJAH POPE be appointed Overseer of the road from Edwards Ferry to the Bridge as is comprehended between the forks of the road at Whiteheads old place & Howells red Hill in place of JOHN SHIELD and that the hands of JOHN SHIELDS, FRANCIS PUGH, NASH REYNOLDS, POLLY PITMAN, TEMPERANCE BARNES, PEGGY WELLS, MARCUS BISHOP, JAMES JONES, WM. KEYMORE work on the said road.


August Court 1824
Ordered that WILLIAM A. TAYLOR be appointed Overseer of the road loading from Burnt Coat Swamp to Jacket Swamp and that the following hands work on said road: WILLIAM A. TAYLOR, THOMAS B. TAYLOR, WILLIAMS ROBERTSON, JOHN B. MITCHELL, HARDY LEE, JOSIAH LEE, JAMES CARLISLE, JOHN CURLIN, and JAMES H. COLLINS.
 
   

MISCELLANEOUS COURT DECISIONS

February Court 1797
Administration of all and singular the goods and chattels rights & credits of JAMES CONNER WILLIAMS deceased is granted to JOSEPH JOHN WILLIAMS his brother, he entered into bond of twenty thousand pounds with WILLIS ALSTON JUNR, JOS.. JNO. ALSTON and JAMES BARNES Suretys.

Ordered that the perishable part of the estate of JAMES WILLIAMS deceased be sold agreeably to law & reported to the next session.

Deed: JOHN RICHARDSON to BENJAMIN BASS was exhibited in Open Court & duly proved by STERLING HARWELL a witness

STERLING HARWELL vs JOHN RICHARDSON
July 18, 1801
We the undersigned Jurors being summoned & sworn to by the Caveatt whereon STERLING HARWELL Esquire, Executor of WM. BRINKLEY deceased, & Guardian &c of the Orphans of said deceased, is Plaintiff & JOHN RICHARDSON is Defendant, and after hearing the evidence of each party & duly considering the same, do find for the plaintiff.
JAMES GILBERT, MATTHEW GILBERT, WAYCOTT DAVIS, ISAAC DEANE, BENJAMIN CARR, JOSEPH BLOUNT, ENOCH DAVIS, JESSE SULLIVANT, JOE JNO. WILLIAMS, WILLIAM WOOD, WILLIAM PACE.

On motion of KEMP PLUMMER attorney for the Plaintiffs ordered that the verdict of the jury be confirmed & judgment accordingly & the costs of suit against the Defendant.

State vs DANIEL MILLS
DANIEL MILLS and HENRY C. JONES came into open court and acknowledged themselves indebted to the State of NC the sum of Fifty pounds each but to be void that DANIEL MILLS make his personal appearance at next court and answer to what may be objected against him.


November Court 1824
State vs DANIEL MILLS
No.2 Jury WILLIAM D. PITTS, ROBERT L. WHITAKER, NELSON HAMEL, JESSE DRAKE, ROBERT BRANTLY, WILLIAM POPE SENR., SAMUEL HARPER, JOHN BROOM, NATHAN BAKER, JOHN CURRY, THOMAS GODWIN, JAMES C. FAUCETT being duly impannelled to try this issue of traverse, Say find defendent guilty of the charge as brought against him in Warrant. Court say that he receive twenty lashes on his bare back at the public whipping post by the Sheriff of the County, and to pay all costs.

State vs STEPHEN READ
No.1 Jury JOSHUA COB, JAMES BRANT, ELIJAH POPE, WILLIS SLEDGE, WARWICK HOCKADA, SR., HENRY PITTS, RICHARD SMITH, JOHN SHIELDS, JACOB POPE, BENJAMIN IVEY, TURNER WILLIAMS and THOMAS VAUGHAN being duly impannelled to try this issue of traverse, Say find him guilty of the assault and battery as mentioned in indictment, Court say that he be imprisoned Ten days in the public gaol, and to pay all costs

State vs FRANCIS PUGH
No.5 Jury W. HOCKADA JR., NELSON HAMEL, ROBERT BRANTLY, ROBT. L. WHITAKER, JESSE DRAKE, JAMES BRENT, WILLIAM POPE SENR., JOHN BAKER, SAM'L HARPER, JOHN CURRY, JOHN BROOM, and JAMES C. FAUCETT being duly impannelled to try this issue of transverse, Jury say find defendant not guilty.

Ordered by the Court that in the case of the State vs STEPHEN READ the defendant by the Court was sentenced to ten days imprisonment. It is ordered by the authority aforesaid that he be liberated from prison, upon paying all costs.

Ordered that HENRY GARRETT admr &c of WILLIAM BURT deceased, sell Negroes ADAM, MATILDA, HENRY her child, FRANCIS, TOM, BILLY, KINCHEN, ENOCH, NED, MOSES, BIG HENRY, CLARY, LIZZA, MARY, MALISSA, PAT, JOHN, MARY, LUCY, HANNAH, CLOE, WILLIAM and ELLICK upon six months credit to satisfy debts existing against the Estate. To sell for Cash enough of said Negroes as will satisfy Executor now out or satisfy any claim that may come against the admr before the expiration of six months.
