When he was 2, they moved to Tucson, AZ where Mark grew up. After graduating high school, he attended the University of Arizona and ASU and worked as a chef and greengrocer.  In 2003, he married the love of his life, Kristina RODATZ.  Since 2008, they have been Corolla’s adored bakers along with their daughters Bailey and Peyton at the Northern Lights Bakery.  He had a smile, a kind word, a fresh donut, or a stunning cake for everyone. Known to many as “Cheffy,” he will be remembered as a caring friend, loving dad, and an adoring husband. When not in the bakery he was with his family in the kitchen, or on a drive up the beach, or boogie boarding. Mark always had a new fascination, podcast, or video to share. He is remembered by his friends as being a listener with solid advice who loved all children. Nevertheless, he sometimes suffered from the misconception that he was an inadequate friend and father. Mark always had a smile so when his friends reflected, “He could have at least left a note – one that would have simply read, ‘Here’s my butter chicken recipe’” it’s because they knew he would laugh with them. They are all shattered by this loss.  A service will be held for Mark on Monday, December 6, 2021, at 12:00 pm on the grounds of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse where he spent many happy days with his friends and family. Police identify man murdered in Currituck County - The Currituck County Sheriff’s office identified the man found dead inside a home in Coinjock, North Carolina on Tuesday night.  Sheriff Matt Beickert confirmed the victim is 36-year-old Adam Markert. The investigation into Markert’s death led officers to 25-year-old Lucas Molesky. Officers took Molesky into custody after a manhunt and standoff in Chesapeake, Wednesday.  Molesky is charged with murder and is awaiting extradition to Currituck County, North Carolina.  Markert’s older sister Sarah said she and her family are coping with her brother’s death, and they are struggling to figure out why he was killed.  “It’s just so sad,” said Sarah Markert. “It’s just... I can’t even put into words how angry I am. That it happened, and how it happened.”  Sarah Markert explained her brother was dating Molesky’s mother, but it was a “toxic relationship,” which ultimately led to problems with Molesky.  Sarah Markert explained her brother’s girlfriend left him in charge of the house, and her son before leaving for a vacation. Hours later, Sarah said her brother was dead.  “It’s just senseless,” said Markert. “It's a senseless crime, and if anyone is in a bad relationship, get out of it now. Because he just couldn't, and because he stayed, he lost his life over something probably so stupid.”  Sarah Markert said her family plans on burying Adam next week. She said he was known as “Captain Safety” and had a contagious smile, someone who was always willing to give a helping hand.  “He was very funny, had a great sense of humor,” said Markert. “Whenever you were in a bad mood, he could just make you laugh and take you out of it so quickly. That’s the one thing I’m going to miss about him the most.”  The Markert family created a GoFundMe for Adam’s funeral expenses, and they said they appreciate the outpouring of support they have received so far.  Lindsay Voorhees with the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office said they are waiting on Markert’s autopsy before releasing more information surrounding his death.  (The Daily Advance - December 6-7, 2018)

On Sunday, April 8, 2018, our precious Matt-Matt went home to be with our Lord. Matt was a loving son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin and most of all, a wonderful friend to many. Matt was happiest when he could spend time with his family and friends. He sure could make us laugh. He had a loving heart and would help you in any way he could.  Matt loved to hunt, fish and jumped at the chance to his do his wild thing on the water with his family and friends. He was an easy-going person who appreciated the simple things in life and wanted for no more than that. He graduated from Currituck High School in 2009. Matt had the opportunity to travel and see thirty-two of our United States through his employment which he loved to do as was evident in all the beautiful pictures he shared with everyone back home. We all wish we had more time for the things we would have loved to do with Matt.  Life is not going to be the same. We will always miss Matt’s kindred spirit and infectious smile. David MELSON

David “Buster” MELSON, 65, of Powells Point passed away Tuesday morning, July 14, 2015 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Buster spent his last night surrounded by his family who shared sweet memories filled with the laughter and love that this father, husband, brother, son and grandad had imparted with them.  Buster was born June 20, 1950 in Roanoke Rapids to Statha and J.A. MELSON. Also surviving is his wife, Debra DeBerry MELSON, his two sons David MELSON and his wife Cheerish, Brandon MELSON and his wife Dawn, and his daughter Jessica BAUM and her husband Chad.  Buster, Pop-Pop as known to his beloved grandchildren, will be greatly missed by Isaiah, Chloe, Hunter, Atreyu and Bryson. He is also survived by his four brothers, Gene BIGGS, Thomas MELSON, Jimmy MELSON, Chris MELSON and his sister Libby MELSON.  Buster did not graduate from a formal education institution but that did not stop him from becoming a ‘gear head genius’. Buster built his first mud truck “Bustin’ Loose” in the early 80’s and it kick started a lifelong hobby of building trucks and motors. Buster took his extensive knowledge and passion for racing and mud trucks and became legendary on many tracks throughout North Carolina and Virginia. If you knew Buster you knew a man, who was larger than life, had a friendly smile and an honest handshake. Some may remember Buster as the 6’3” guy in overalls, some may remember the dancing skills he showed off at the ole’ casino in Nags Head or some remember the pool shark talents that enabled him to travel the United States. No matter how you remember Buster, you knew that he was a man of integrity, hard work, and thankful to God who gave him an incredible miracle and a few extra years with his family.  Funeral services will be held at Grandy Community Church on Saturday, July 18 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends and family at the church Friday, July 17 from 6:00-8:00 pm and other times at their residence. James Augusta MELSON, JR.

James Augusta “JA” MELSON, JR., 94 of 121 Westside Lane, Powell’s Point, NC was called home by the Lord on the evening of Tuesday, September 19, 2017. He was born April 6, 1923 in Mamie, NC to the late James Augusta MELSON, SR. and Amy Forbes MELSON and was the husband of Statha Biggs MELSON of the residence. He was a devout Christian, an honest man, a loving husband, a father, and a teacher in life to many.  In addition to his wife he is survived by three daughters, Charlotte (David) MANN, Amy MELSON, and Libby MELSON; four sons, Thomas MELSON, Jimmy MELSON, Chris MELSON, and Gene BIGGS; one daughter-in-law, Debbie MELSON. He was predeceased by two sons, James Augusta MELSON, III and Buster MELSON; and four siblings. Papa JA, as he was known by his many grandchildren and great grandchildren will be greatly missed.  JA’s first job started in 1936, at age thirteen with his big brother Doke in the Melson’s Junk Yard. JA worked there until he turned seventeen and decided to join the Navy where he served for seven years. After his naval service, he began work as Lead Man at the Virginia Air Station. He then became the Tanker Man on the tugboats for the Gulf Atlantic Oil Company. In 1963, JA decided to settle closer to home where he built and operated Melson’s Service Station in Powells Point. Once the service station was up and running JA decided to open yet another business; a sand dredging and washing company. Melson Sand Company is where JA spent his next thirty plus years till he retired in 1966.  Retirement for JA meant more free time to be in the garage where he spent the rest of his able years building motors of all sizes and racing machines of all kinds. One of his many pride and joys from that garage was his 1940 Ford Pickup, though raced, wrecked, and put back together that truck was never too far. The vast mechanical and working knowledge that JA passed down to many people, especially to his sons and grandsons, will never be forgotten.  JA was a man who loved Jesus, the Lord our Savior, with every bone in his body. If he could have laced up his boots and walked to Heaven he would have been there years ago. JA was a member of Powells Point Baptist Church since birth where he served as Head Deacon for many years. He was a faithful servant who not once let his faith waiver in his walk with the Lord. If you would give him the time of the day he would give you a scripture for the day. He didn’t care where he was or who you were, if he felt it in his heart to preach or pray or both he was going to do it, with or without your permission. God was on his side and that’s all he needed. As JA always said on the way out the door “may the Lord bless you and keep you.”  A funeral service will be held Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Powell’s Point Baptist Church with the Rev. James CLARK officiating. Burial will follow in Powell’s Point Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post #6060. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Saturday at the church and at other times at the residence. Following the service on Sunday a reception in honor of JA will be held at the church fellowship hall. Twiford Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is serving the MELSON family. (Twiford Funeral Home)
