WHITEVILLE - James Godfrey, 62, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
He was a construction worker.
Final rites weree conducted Sunday, June 6 at Peoples Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Campground Cemetery, Whiteville. Peoples Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Helen J. Godfrey; a daughter: Josephine Lennon of Whiteville; a son: James Godfrey Jr. of Laurinburg; a stepdaughter: Maxine Sinkler of Whiteville; two stepsons: Wendell Sinkler of Whiteville and Michael Jordan of the home; nine sisters: twin sister Ollie Prince, Geraldine McKinnis, Barbara Ballard, Linda Burroughs and Tarshia Underwood, all of Whiteville, Dorothy Salgado of Montgomery, N.Y., Lille Mae Godfrey of Manhattan, N.Y., Louise Richardson of Fuquay Varina and Brenda Smith of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers: Lee Wayne Godfrey of Atlanta, Ga. and Robert Godfrey of New Jersey; and a god-sister Gloria Thompson of Whiteville.
 

BOBBY F. HAMMOND
Veteran, engineer
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Bobby Franklin Hammond, 78, formerly of Cerro Gordo, died Saturday, May 29, 2004 at the VA Medical Center in Hampton, Va.
He was the son of the late James Dennis Hammond and Elizabeth Dae Tart Hammond and was preceded in death by three brothers: J.D. Hammond, Gene Hammond and Edwin Hammond and a nephew: Dennis Melvin Hammond. He worked as an operational engineer at the shipyard and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the European Theatre and later in the Korean Conflict. During these years, he received the following medals: American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Medal with five bronze stars, Philippines Liberation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Philippines Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Distinguished Service Medal and a 50-year American Legion Award.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, June 5 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel by the Rev. Elmore Strickland. Interment was in the Riegelwood Baptist Church Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.
He is survived by seven nieces: Donna G. Hammond of Riegelwood, Carol H. Shearin of Ellerslie, Md., Ann H. Meadows and Sharron H. Powell, both of Cerro Gordo, Kathy H. Long of Whiteville, Susan H. Jacobs of Nakina and Melissa H. Hewett of Shallotte; a nephew: James Edwin Hammond of Wilmington; two sisters-in-law: Ollie B. Hammond of Whiteville and Sandra H. Walsh of Riegelwood; 18 great nieces and nephews and five great-great nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers were James Hammond, Tommy Justice, Charles Justice, Jonathan Shearin, Jason Meadows and Gene Long. Honorary pallbearers were Andrew Jacobs, Brandon Jacobs, Steven Powell, Justin Hewett, Chris Hammond, Zachary Shearin, Michael Meadows and Patrick Justice.
Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
 

EUGENE W. ENGEN
Former owner/operator of Penn-s Grill, Veteran
WHITEVILLE - Eugene William Engen, 82, died Friday, June 4, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
He was born Sept. 28, 1921 in New York City, the son of the late John and Josephine Engen. He formerly owned and operated Penn-s Grill for 33 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the medical corps during WWII.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, June 6 at 3 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jim Dickson. Interment was in Peacock-s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Leola Summersett Engen; a son: Bill Engen and wife Debbie of Newberry, S.C.; two daughters: Betty Engen Faircloth and husband Gary of Battle Creek, Mich. and Carol Engen Thompson of Whiteville; a brother: Raymond Engen and wife Eleanor of New Jersey; and seven grandchildren: Jessica Thompson, Brad Faircloth, Travis Faircloth, Matt Engen, Casey Engen, Averie Engen and Landyn Engen.
Serving as pallbearers were David Enzor, Gideon Wilson, Rodney Edwards, Jake Sutton, Charlie Duncan and Ernest Cain Jr.

 

WILLIE M. FREEMAN
Veteran, industrial mechanic
DELCO - Willie Morris -Bunny- Freeman, 56, died Thursday, June 3, 2004 at his residence.
He worked at E.I. Dupont for 31 years as an industrial mechanic.
He was born on Columbus County to Mack T. Freeman Sr. and Eva Mae Patrick Freeman Sr. He graduated from Armour High School in 1966, then joined the U.S. Army where he served six years with a tour in Vietnam. He was a faithful and dutiful member of Evergreen AME Zion Church.
Final rites will be conducted Thursday, June 10 at 1 p.m. at Evergreen AME Zion Church by presiding Elder Alexander L. Jones eulogizing. The Rev. J.L. Nichols is the pastor. French Davis Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Toni Wilson Freeman; two children: Willie M. Freeman Jr. and Raven Freeman, both of the home.

Homemaker
CERRO GORDO - Irene Thompson Green, 86, died Friday, June 4, 2004 at Premier Living of Lake Waccamaw.
She was the daughter of the late Charles N. Thompson Sr. and Reka Herring Thompson and the widow of Elbert Howard Green.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, June 6 at Worthington Funeral home by the Rev. Billy Stines. Interment was in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a brother: Charles Thompson Jr. of Cerro Gordo; and a sister: Emrett Thompson Shelley of Cerro Gordo.
Pallbearers were Danny Greene, James Hayes, Rossie Hayes, Jason Whitehead, Johnny Whitehead and Michael Whitehead.
 

ROBERT E. BRYANT
Farmer, Veteran
GREEN SEA, S.C. - Robert Eldridge Bryant, 88, died Saturday, June 5, 2004 in Conway, S.C.
He was the son of the late Warren Carlisle Bryant and Bessie Watson Bryant. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 10 years and was a retired farmer.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, June 8 at 11 a.m. in the Inman Funeral Home Chapel, Tabor City. Interment will be in Green Sea Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Austin Grainger Bryant of the home; and a sister: Rebecca Loch of New Orleans, La.
Visitation will be Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Inman Funeral Home, Tabor City.

TRENTON, N.J. - James A. Lucas, 83, formerly of Bolton, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at Restwell Cemetery #1, Bolton. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by a daughter: Barbara Tatum of Trenton, N.J.

BLADENBORO - Glenn -Bobby- Thompson, 32, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.
A memorial service will be conducted Monday, June 7 at 3 p.m. at Galeed Baptist Church by the Reverends Bruce Cannon and Bud Parrish. Lewis Funeral Home of Bladenboro is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie Thompson of the home; two sons: Christopher S. Thompson of Spring Lake and David A. Armstrong of Ohio; a stepson: Erick Taylor of the home; two daughters: Mackenzie J. Thompson of Ohio and Kaylee C. Thompson of the home; a brother: John Paul Thompson of Garland; and his parents: Glenn Robert and Sharon H. Thompson of Garland.

TABOR CITY - Jennie Lynn Timmons, 44, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 in New Orleans, La.
She was a native of Columbus County, the daughter of David and Margaret Soles Tyson. She was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, June 5 in Inman Chapel with interment in Myrtle Green Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a son: Brad Timmons of Tabor City; her parents: David and Margaret Tyson of Tabor City; two brothers; Jeff Tyson of Raleigh and Greg Tyson of Angier; and a sister: Sonja Godwin of Tabor City.

FAYETTEVILLE - Myrtie Louise Todd, 71, died Friday, June 4, 2004 at Village Green Nursing Center.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, June 6 at Faymont Baptist Church of Fayetteville by the Rev. Chris Evans. Interment was at Cumberland Memorial Gardens. Rogers and Breece Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Elwood Todd of the home; two daughters: Debbie McMillan and Sandy Godwin, both of Fayetteville; two brothers: Grady Cribb of Whitevillle and Roger Cribb of Clarkton; five sisters: Gertie Nobles of Fayetteville, Belinda Brown and Jeanette Nobles, both of Chadbourn, Brenda Thompkins of Lumberton and Marie Cheshire of Wilmington; and five grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Rutha -Leo- Roberson of Riegelwood; a son: Jerry Roberson of Long Island City, N.Y., two daughters: Brenda Teasley of Fayetteville and Joan Avant of Elizabethtown; two sisters: Hattie King and Ruthie Littles, both of Gordon, Ala.; and a brother: Sammy Roberson of New York City, N.Y.

PATERSON, N.J. - Mark Wayne Kelly, 38, died Saturday, May 29, 2004 in Columbus County.
Final rites were conducted Friday, June 4 at Sandhill Missionary Baptist Church, Abbottsburg, by the Reverends Donald Thompson and James A. Smith. Interment was in the Sandhill Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his mother: Lula M. Kelly of Paterson, N.J.; his father: John Epps Jr. of Bolton; and two sisters: Daphene Kelly and Kesha Kelly, both of Paterson, N.J.

ELIZABETH ROBINSON
Homemaker, teacher
WHITEVILLE - Elizabeth Wiseman Robinson died Sunday, June 6, 2004 at her home.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wiseman of Kannapolis and the widow of Sanky W. Robinson. She was a homemaker and was a teacher in the Whiteville City School System. She was also an active member of Whiteville First Baptist Church.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, June 8 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Kendell L. Cameron Jr. Interment will be in Columbus Memorial Park. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter: Beth Robinson of the home.
The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elizabeth W. Robinson Memorial Fund, c/o First Baptist Church or to a charity of one-s choice.

Veteran, community volunteer, owner/operator of Chadbourn Hasty Mart
CERRO GORDO, CHADBOURN - Ret. Major Aquila Pearson -A.P.- Worley Jr., 74, died Friday, May 28, 2004 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was the son of the late Aquila P. and Bertie Lee Strickland Worley Sr. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Dudney Worley after 53 years of marriage. Mr. Worley retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years of service and became very active in the community, serving on the Columbus County Public Library board of directors, Chadbourn Community Library board of directors, West Columbus High School advisory board, president of the Greater Chadbourn Chamber of Commerce, regional director for the Employment Security Commission, owner, operator of the Hasty Mart in Chadbourn and a former buffalo breeder.
Final rites were conducted Tuesday, June 1 at Chadbourn Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Paul Layton and the Rev. Elmore Strickland. Interment was in Cherry Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Amanda Regan Worley of the home; children: Richard Worley and wife Dianne of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Jean W. Powell and husband Tommy of Chadbourn, Marilyn Ballard and husband Harold of Clayton, Teresa Hopkins and husband Richard of Whiteville and David P. Worley and wife Debbie of Chadbourn; a sister: Roselene Johnson and husband Clarence of Chesapeake, Va.; grandchildren: Robert Perdue, Karen Beth Ellis, Allison W. Ribeiro, Steven Powell, Terry Wayne Eason, Richard Worley Jr., Kenna Grigorov, Austin Worley, Andrew Worley, Celia Barbieri, David Cody Worley; a great-granddaughter: Sarah Ann Perdue; and a faithful dog, Jose.
Pallbearers were Andrew Worley, Austin Worley, Steven Powell, Robert Perdue, Richard W. Worley Jr. and Richard Hopkins.

BLADENBORO - Rosa Lea Troutman, 76, died Thursday, May 27, 2004 at Bladen County Hospital.
She was a retired beautician.
Final rites were conducted Thursday, June 3 at Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church, Abbottsburg, by the Rev. Cedric Mathis. Interment was in Pone Cemetery, Abbottsburg. Peoples Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two daughters: Derilyn Troutman of Trenton, N.J. and Amelia Troutman of Neward, N.J.; and three sons: Lenwood J. Barnhill of Boca Raton, Fla., Marco Troutman of Trenton, N.J. and Bruce Gordonel of Clarksville, Tenn.

FAIR BLUFF - Hazel Lee Jones, 56, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at The Meadows of Lake Waccamaw.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, June 4 at 1 p.m. at Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Fair Bluff. Interment will be in Butler Branch Cemetery, Fair Bluff. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter: Denise Lane of Greensboro; three sisters: Ruby Laster and Henrietta Mitchell, both Durham and Vermel Bacote of Oxon Hill, Md.; and a brother: Kelly Williams of Durham.

He is survived by his wife, Mary R. WHITEVILLE - Garland Wilson, 47, died Tuesday, June 2, 2004 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.
He was the son of the late James Robert -J.R.- and Ruby Williamson Wilson. He was employed by the maintenance department of the Whiteville City School system.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, June 4 at 3 p.m. at Williamson-s Crossroads Baptist Church by the Rev. Linzy Nance. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his fianc- Emily E. Edwards of Whiteville; two sisters: Diane W. Powell of Cerro Gordo and Janice L. Wilson of Chadbourn; two brothers: Thomas Wilson of Chadbourn and Wade Wilson of Whiteville; and one grandchild.
Visitation will be Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Worthington Funeral Home.

CHADBOURN - Estelle Shaw Nobles, 82, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
She was the widow of Harvey Nobles and the daughter of the late Willie Lester and Mary Elizabeth Pierce Shaw.
Final rites will be conducted Thursday, June 3 at 2 p.m. at Ward-s Station Church of God by the Rev. Richard Thomas. Interment will be in China Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter: Doris Levern Nobles of Chadbourn; three sisters: Eloise Mishue of Orrum, Juanita Kekipi of Spring Lake and Margaret Osborne of Fayetteville; three brothers: Alton Shaw of Lumberton, Willie Lester Shaw Jr. of Goldsboro and Walter Morris Shaw of Fayetteville; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Retired farmer, Veteran
WHITEVILLE - Manly Elwood Porter, 95, died Monday, May 31, 2004 at his residence.
He was the husband of the late Lois Cockman Porter and the son of the late James Elwood and Georgia Anna Barden Porter. He was a retired farmer and veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Chadbourn Masonic Lodge #608 and was a Shriner.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, June 2 at Evergreen Baptist Church by the Rev. Ricky Donaldson. Masonic burial rites followed in Columbus Memorial Park, Whiteville. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by a daughter: Georgia Porter Hicks of Charlotte; a son: John M. Porter of the home; a sister: Norma P. Scialdone of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother: Samuel Porter of Wilmington; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Ken Bowen, Trey Hicks, Kip McClary, Brant McClary, Reid Plyler, Stephen Porter and Jimmy Wells.

LUMBERTON - Pearl Gates Inman Jackson, 85, died Monday, May 31, 2004 in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Columbus County Feb. 12, 1919.

TABOR CITY - Nila Pearl Inman, 93, died Wednesday at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington.
She was a Columbus County  native, the daughter of the late Warren and Margaret Mills Wright and widow of William Fred Inman.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 12 in the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Revs. David Todd and Russell Long with interment in the Spivey Cemetery, Tabor City.
She is surved by a son: Allen Inman of Tabor City, and two grandchildren.

LAKE WACCAMAW - Kenneth Maurice Barnes Sr. died Thursday, June 10, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital. He was born in Robeson County June 29, 1940 to Clinton Barnes and Pauline Britt Barnes of Chadbourn.
His father, Clinton and stepfather George Franklin Bullard preceded him in death, both of Chadbourn. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Lake Waccamaw and was retired from Columbus County Schools.
He was a 1958 graduate of Chadbourn High School and graduated in 1962 from Atlantic Christian College, Wilson with a B.A. Degree in Business Administration.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lake Waccamaw by the Rev. Darrell Phillips. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife: Jo Ann Merritt Barnes; a son: Kenneth -Kenny- Maurice Barnes Jr. and wife Lynn; two grandchildren: Haley Grey Barnes and Z. Houston Barnes all of Lake Waccamaw; also surviving is his mother: Pauline Britt Barnes Bullard of Chadbourn.

WHITEVILLE - Nettie Mae Etheridge, 85, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Walter Emerson and Lula Jones Long. She was the widow of Carson Etheridge Sr. She formerly owned and operated Etheridge Grocery at Rt. 4, Whiteville for many years. After retirement, she operated a business in her home breeding and selling exotic birds.
Final rites were conducted Thursday, June 10 at Peacock-s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. Steve Nobles. Entombment was in Columbus Memorial Park Mausoleum. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a son: Carson Etheridge Jr. and wife Jeanette of Whiteville; a brother: Jessie Long of Hallsboro; two sisters: Eula Grey Register of Whiteville and Estalene Faulk of Nakina; two grandchildren: Carsha Etheridge Norris and husband Bryan of Whiteville and Robert Gaddy and wife Carol of Lumberton.

A native of Whiteville, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary Anna Smith Schulken. She graduated from James Madison University and taught school in Whiteville at one time. She had been a resident of Durham for many years where she was active in civic affairs and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was a member of Hope Valley Country Club of which her husband was a founding member, the Durham Junior League and the Durham Debutante Ball Society.
Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, June 9 in Maplewood Cemetery, Section 1. Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and served in the Army-Air Force during WWII as a nurse. She worked as a nurse at Columbus County Hospital for more than 50 years.

He was born Oct. 29, 1981 in New Hanover, the son of Larry Ray Patrick Sr. and Deborah Sue Thompson Patrick. He was an honor student and a 2000 graduate of East Columbus High School where he participated in the Gators basketball and baseball teams.

in Columbus, Bladen, Scotland and Brunswick counties. He formerly served as a probation parole officer and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is survived by a half-brother: Mitchell Jacobs of Bolton; a half-sister: Kayla Jacobs of Bolton; maternal grandparents: Hugh and Peggy Jacobs of Bolton; and paternal grandparents: Jerry and Mary Little of Delco.

ERWIN - The Rev. Bennie E. Pledger, 79, died Friday, June 18, 2004.
He was born in Northampton County on Oct. 21, 1924, the son of the
late Mamie Lee Parks Pledger and Richard Norman Pledger. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lela Fretwell.
He served in the 101st Airborne Division during WWII and took part in Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he graduated from Wake Forest University and Duke University Divinity School. He served as minister of Carolina Pines Baptist Church in Raleigh, Ayden First Baptist Church, Colerain Baptist Church, Colony Baptist Church in New Bern, New Hope Baptist Church in Whiteville and Lennons Cross Roads Baptist Church. Since retirement, he was a member of First Baptist Church in Erwin.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, June 22 at 11:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Erwin by the Reverends Steve Reed and Robbie Parker. A graveside service will be held at Pineview Memorial Cemetery in Rocky Mount at 3:30 p.m. Skinner & Smith Funeral Home of Dunn is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Willie Eakes Pledger; a daughter: Constance Pledger Ramey and her husband F. Lyndon Ramey Jr. of Linden; and a sister: Virginia Bruttle of Woodland.

CHADBOURN - Dennis Rea Grainger, 70, died Sunday, June 20, 2004 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center of Wilmington.
He was a native of Loris, S.C., the son of the late Harvey Rea and Ruth Grainger. He was a graduate of Green Sea High School and attended Clemson College. He was a member of the Loris Masonic Lodge #205. His career in the grocery business began at an early age when he was employed at the Queen Bee Supermarket in Loris, S.C. His career continued as he worked for Port City Distributors in Whiteville and in December 1977, he opened Grainger-s Supermarket in Chadbourn where he operated the business until his retirement in 1995.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Kenneth P. Grainger, Randy Grainger and Jimmy Grainger; and a sister: Louise Grainger.
Final rites will be conducted Wednesday, June 23 at 2 p.m. at Chadbourn Baptist Church where he was a member. The Rev. Robert Norman and the Rev. Dr. Corbin Cooper will officiate. Interment will be in Twin City Memorial Gardens in Loris, S.C. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC - Gary L. Zeller, 63, formerly of Mount Joy, Boston and Germany, died May 22 of natural cause at Hospiz Sinus in Hamburg, Germany.
He was an administrator and fundraiser at The Stage School of Music, Dance and Drama, Hamburg.
He began his career as a humanities instructor at Southeastern Community College and Emerson College, Boston.
Zeller spent most of his career as the assistant dean of the School of Arts at Boston University.
At Boston Symphony Orchestra-s summer home, Tanglewood Institute, he was the former director of the summer training program and worked with musicians and composers including Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein.
He also had been the dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Radford University in Virginia and director of MacPhail Center for the Arts at the University of Minnesota.
A 1958 graduate of Donegal High School, he was a music education graduate of Lebanon Valley College. He received master-s degrees in music education and music theory from University of Arkansas and a doctorate in musicology from Catholic University of America.
An expert on jazz, he also was a student of languages, avid reader of mysteries, a cook and a traveler.
Born in Mount Joy, he was the son of John Zeller of Mount Joy and the late Hazel Hoffman Zeller.
Surviving besides his father are two brothers: Terry of Mount Joy and Brent of Kentfield, Calif.

BLADENBORO - Clara Lewis Lowery, 97, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at her home.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday, June 27 by the Rev. Greg Packer at Lewis Cemetery in Bladenboro. Lewis Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by three sons: James E. -Jim- Lowery of Atlanta, Ga., Alton C. -Al- Lowery of Bladenboro and Talton -T.C.- Lowery of Wilmington; a daughter: Connie L. Gainey of Bladenboro; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

EUGENE V. SASSER
Teacher, Veteran
LORIS, S.C. - Eugene Victor Sasser, 90, of the Gurley community, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at Loris Community Hospital following an illness.
Born Oct. 19, 1913 in Loris, S.C. he was the son of the late John William Sasser and the late Mantha Joanna Smith Sasser. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a retired English/French teacher at Williams Township School, a Mason and a member of Loris Lions Club and Loris Presbyterian Church. He was past president of Lions Club District 32C and received the Melvin Jones Scholar Award from Lions International. He was also past executive secretary of the Loris Chamber of Commerce.
Final rites were conducted Monday, June 28 at Loris Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Randy Kesler and the Rev. Dr. Billy Moore. Interment was in Anderson Cemetery. Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. handled the arrangements.
He is survived by numerous cousins and friends and was preceded in death by eight half brothers and sisters.

FAIR BLUFF - Jerry Bullock, 46, died Friday, June 18, 2004 at his home.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, June 25 at 3 p.m. at Butler Branch Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. C.W. Joyner. Interment will be in the Butler Branch Cemetery, Fair Bluff. S & L Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Rogers; three sons: Charles, Jerry and Tiddy Rogers, all of Hartford, Conn.; a daughter: LaShonda Rogers of Hartford, Conn.; his mother: Beaulah Moss; two sisters: Linda Anderson of Hartford, Conn. and Shirley Ann Williamson of Fair Bluff; and a brother: Johnny Howard Bullock of Fair Bluff.
The family will receive friends at the home.

WHITEVILLE - Rufus Cooper, 79, died Sunday, June 20, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
He was a factory worker.
Final rites will be conducted Saturday, June 26 at 1 p.m. at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Ronnie Ford. Interment will be in the Kelly Cemetery in Bladenboro. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Lucinda Cooper; a daughter: Zella Jones of Hillside, N.J.; a son: Carl Cooper of the home; and a sister: Mae Battles of Jersey City, N.J.
The body may be viewed at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday, at the funeral home Friday from noon until 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10-11 a.m.

CLARKTON - Katherine Darden Baldwin, 86, died Monday, June 21, 2004 at Bladen County Hospital.
She was a homemaker.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, June 23 at Clarkton United Methodist Church by the Reverends Neil Smith and Barry Stallings. Interment was in the Clarkton City Cemetery. Gaskins Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a son: Donald M. Baldwin III of Culpepper, Va.; a daughter: Katherine Baldwin Daniel of Raleigh; three brothers: Jennings Darden of Denver, Colo., Fisher Daren of Jacksonville, Fla. and Charlie Darden of Conway, S.C.; a sister: Lib Fort of Clarkton; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was employed as a farm worker.

He is survived by a daughter: Tasha Hines of New Jersey; a son: Anthony Burney of Chadbourn; a godson: Gary Jones of Council, six sisters: Marilyn McMillan of Abingdon, Md., Rebecca Mozella Farris of Elizabethtown, Evelyn Elizabeth Pittman of Raleigh, Sharon Denise Young of Clarkton, Joyce Davis of Bladenboro and Lenioar Webb of Delco; and two brothers: James Gerald Pigford of Lake Waccamaw and Henry Sylvester Young of Elizabethtown.

She was a retired nurses- aide.

She is survived by a daughter: Marjorie Ford of Charlotte.

EDNA D. COLLARD
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Edna Dew Collard, 64, died Monday, June 21, 2004.
She was born May 2, 1940, the daughter of the late Mollie and Henry Dew. She was preceded in death by a daughter: Theresa Denning; a brother: Adolph Dew; four sisters: Allene Burley, Doris Sobczak, Faye Ferrari and Jackie Jablonowski.
Final rites will be conducted Saturday, June 26 at 2 p.m. in Grand Haven, Mich.
She is survived by two sons: Tony Collard and wife Wendy of Ann Arbor, Mich. and Ike Collard and wife Minon of Spring Lake, Mich; a sister: Carolyn Nobles and husband Billy of Hallsboro; two brothers: Eugene Laudenslager and wife Betty of Flat Rock, Mich. and Jimmy Dew and wife Linda of Whiteville; and seven grandchildren.

LARRY G. EZZELL

FAIR BLUFF - Larry G. Ezzell, 62, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
He was a native of Old Dock, the son of the late Palmer Curtis Ezzell and Glennie Bell Powell Ezzell. A charter member of Brunswick Baptist Church, he served as chairman of the deacons, as Sunday school teacher and former music director. He always felt that his duties in the church were wherever he was needed. He was retired from E.I. Dupont.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, June 25 at 4 p.m. at Brunswick Baptist Church by the Reverends Merle Johnson and Tim Moore. Interment will be in the Powell Cemetery in Fair Bluff. Meares Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Leona Conner Ezzell of the home; two sons: Chris Ezzell of Fayetteville and Brian Ezzell of Fair Bluff; a brother: Delma Ezzell of Brunswick; three sisters: Barbara Ann Gore of Old Dock, Wilma Horne of Whiteville and Muriel Hill of Lake Waccamaw; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Michael Connor, Paul Pridgen, Melvin Ezzell, Richard Gore, Calvin Gore and Gary Horne. Honorary pallbearers will be John Cartrette, the Rev. Ralph Gore and Milton Boswell.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Meares Funeral Home, Fair Bluff.

NAKINA - Addie Clewis Long, 79, died Thursday, June 24, 2004 in Columbus County Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Neil and Ruth Etheridge Clewis and the widow of Ralph Long Sr.
She is survived by two daughters: Maxine L. Canady and Josephine L. Hayes, both of Whiteville; three sons: James Ralph -Nicky- Long and Ralph -Curly- Long Jr., both of Whiteville and Forest Ray -Tee-Ti- Long of Nakina; a sister: Ocie Lee Spivey of Whiteville; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
