JOSEPH E COLEMAN SR

TABOR CITY - Joseph Elwood Coleman Sr., 76, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004 at home following an extended illness.
Predeceased by his parents: Roscoe C. Coleman Sr. and Ivey Harrelson Coleman, and his brother, R.C. Coleman Jr.
Coleman was a graduate of Tabor City High School and Oak Ridge Military Institute in Oak Ridge. He was a lifetime deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir member at Tabor City Baptist Church. He was a farmer and tobacconist in Tabor City, Greensboro, Boone and Mountain City, Tenn. He was also a past trustee of the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, past director of United Carolina Bank, and a past president of the Bright Belt Warehouse Association. He was also a member of the Tabor City Rotary Club and Tabor City Committee of 100.
He is survived by his wife: Virginia Katherine Coleman of Tabor City; two sons: Joseph Eldwood Coleman Jr. and wife Debra M. Coleman of Tabor City; Richard P. Coleman Sr. and wife Cathy M. Coleman of Tabor City; one daughter: Sherry Coleman Loflin and husband J. Perry Loflin of Greensboro; five grandchildren: Richard Coleman Jr., Jesse Coleman, Christian Coleman, Bradley Loflin, and Nicole Loflin.
Funeral serves were conducted Wednesday, Aug. 4 at the Tabor City Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Coleman Cemetery in Tabor City.
Joe loved the Lord, his family, and all people.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Tabor City Baptist Church at 220 Live Oak St., Tabor City, N.C. 28463.

EDWIN WALTERS
BARNESVILLE - Edwin Walters, 87, died at his residence Monday, Aug. 2, 2004.
Walters was born in Robeson County the son of the late Oliver B. Walters and Janie Mae Wiggins Walters, he was preceded in death by a daughter Jeanette Walters Floyd and an infant son, George Edwin Walters.
In addition to farming he operated Walters- Groceries in the Barnesville community. He and his wife celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary July 12.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Aug. 4 at Barnesville Baptist Church by the Rev. David McClellan. Interment followed in the Walters Family Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife: Catherine C. Walters of the home; three sons: Lance Walters of Greensboro, Randy Walters and Eric Walters, both of Barnesville; four daughters: Shirley Barbee of Florence, S.C.; Ada Ellis of Fair Bluff; Linda Lawson and Cathy Foley, both of Lumberton; 30 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

MAMIE P THOMAS
POLKTON - Mamie Porter Thomas, 83, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 in Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Her husband, Ransom T. Thomas preceded her in death along with a son, Billy Frank Thomas and the following brothers and sisters; Bennett Porter, Brice Porter, Haywood Porter, Virgie Porter, and Sadie Porter.
She was born in Anson County on July 12, 1920, the daughter of the late Doss and Ollie Tyson Porter. She was retired from Wansona Manufacturing and was a long time member of Red Hill Baptist Church, where she received a lifetime service award for her work as the church-s pianist and as a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include her children: Christine -Chris- Gross of Charlotte; Betty Gray Thompson, Charles Thomas, both of Polkton, and Randy Thomas of Chadbourn, two sisters: Louise Griffin of Wadesboro and Betty Sue Dewalt of Raleigh, 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and a special friend, Ruby Marsh.
Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at Red Hill Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends tonight (Thursday) from 7-8:30 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro.
Memorials may be made to Red Hill Cemetery Fund, Rt. 2, Box 269, Polkton, N.C. 28135 or the charity of one's choice.

BETTY JANE MILLER
WHITEVILLE - Betty Jane Miller, 69, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004 in Duke Medical Center, Durham. She was the widow of William Miller. A native of Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Bane and Blanche Bellamy Norris.
A memorial service was held Thursday, Aug. 5 at Sandy Plain Baptist Church, Tabor City, conducted by the Rev. Ragsdale Allsbrook and Wendell Ray.
She is survived by two daughters: Linda Taylor of Whiteville and Janet Cooper of Maine; two brothers: Bobby Norris of Tabor City and Otis Norris of Rock Hill, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

HOLDEN BEACH - Annette Brown Grainger, 50, formerly of Chadbourn, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2004 at her residence.
She was the daughter of the late Fulton Macmillian Brown Sr. Annette was a dedicated member of the Chadbourn Presbyterian Church, an avid reader, wonderful gardener and co-owner of Grainger-s Food Center along with her husband, Barry.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday at Chadbourn Presbyterian Church with Dr. Paul Layton officiating. Interment followed in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband: Barry Rea Grainger of the home; two sons: Timothy Revis Long and Mcmillian Rea Grainger, both of the home; her mother: Ethel Williamson Brown of Chadbourn; a sister: Jeanne Brown Ivey and husband, Harold of Chadbourn; a brother: Fulton Mcmillian -Mac- Brown Jr. and wife, Brenda of Chadbourn; two nieces and two nephews.
Serving as pallbearers were Jerome Honeycutt, Jimmy Ferguson, Larry Tew, Edward Hooks, Larry Grainger and Richard Rabon.

PETERSBURG, Va. - Oliver P. Johnson, 55, formerly of Whiteville, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.
He was the son of the late Oliver and Louise Johnson of Whiteville.
Graveside services were held Thursday, Aug. 5 at Millican Cemetery in Whiteville by the Rev. E.C. Dobson.
He is survived by his wife, Monica S. Johnson.

FAIRMONT - Glenn Warren Watson, 42, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004 at St. Eugene Medical Center in Dillon, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Iva Dean Watson.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 5 at 5 p.m. at Floyd Funeral Services- Chapel, Fairmont by the Rev. Frank Campbell. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Survivors include his wife: Kathy Kanny Watson of the home, son: Willard Brandon Watson of the home, daughter: Alyson Swaner of Winchester, Va., two sisters: Marcia Watson Sibbett of Lake Waccamaw and Billie Watson Bullard of Winchester, Va., and two grandchildren.

Retired from Lowe's, former funeral director and owner
GRANITE FALLS - Dannie Calvin Sheffield, 74, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004. A native of Carthage, he was the son of the late John and Bertha McDonald Sheffield and was also preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
He was retired from Lowe-s Hardware. He had formerly been a funeral director, and had owned businesses in Ocean Isle Beach and Shallotte. He was a graduate of Carthage High School and Gupton Jones School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn. He also attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He was a member of United Presbyterian Church in Lenoir. He previously served as an elder at Shallotte Presbyterian Church and also involved with beach ministry at Ocean Isle Beach.
He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge in Southern Pines, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. He was past president of the Shallotte Rotary Club, member of the N.C. and National Funeral Director's Assoc. For many years, he served as a Scout Master in Shallotte.
Graveside rites were held at Knightdale Cemetery on Thursday, Aug. 5. The Rev. Stephen Austin officiated. A memorial service will be held at United Presbyterian Church, 415 Pennell Street in Lenoir on Sunday, Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. officiated by Rev. Austin.
He is survived by his wife: Barbara Daniel Sheffield of the home, sons: Dannie Calvin Sheffield Jr. of Hyannis, Mass. and John Gardner Sheffield of Greensboro, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.

DURHAM - Stewart Noland Lennon, 41, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. at First St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville by Elder Mary Hawkins. Burial will follow in Kelly Cemetery in Bladenboro.
Surviving are a daughter: Nakia Charmaine Featherson of Paterson, N.J.; two sons: Kendell L. Lennon of Fayetteville and Jamal Frazier of Clifton, N.J.; his mother: Swannie Barden Lennon of Whiteville; his father: Arthur Lennon of Bladenboro; two sisters: Anna L. Godfrey of Durham and Ornetta Lennon of Whiteville; a maternal grandmother: Viola Barden of Whiteville.

BOLTON - Bernyce -Bunny- Faulk Reel, 77, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Isaac Stanley Faulk and Gertrude Creech Faulk and was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Franklin Reel. She was a member of Bolton Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held Thursday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. at Bolton Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughters: Trudy Hines of Bolton, Keri Powell and husband Doug of Shallotte and Cathi R. Cully and husband Jeff of Bolton, sister: Elouise Williams of Bolton, brother: Herman C. Faulk of Pleasant Garden, Mich., grandsons: Isaac Joe Hines of Battle Creek, Mich., Doug Powell Jr. and Ryan Powell, granddaughters: Christine Powell and Isabelle Cully, several nieces and nephews.

GREEN SEA, S.C. - Kenneth -Ronnie- Strickland, 56, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004 in Loris Hospital. He was a native of Horry County, and the son of Pete Strickland and the late Quilla Ree Fowler Strickland.
Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. in the Inman Chapel.
He is survived by his wife: Mary Strickland of Green Sea, S.C.; two sons: Kenneth Strickland of Fair Bluff and Johnny Strickland of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one daughter: Margaret Duncan of Green Sea, S.C.; two brothers: Joe Strickland and Stevie Strickland, both of Green Sea, S.C.; one sister: Judy Anderson of Green Sea, S.C.; and five grandchildren.

ANDREWS, S.C. - Rev. Earl DeVon Brooks, 68, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Rev. Brooks was born in Brookfield, Ind. on Nov. 29, 1935, a son of the late Arthur DeVon Brooks and Cecil Leon McNew Brooks. He grew up in New Palestine, Ind. and graduated from Moral High School. Rev. Brooks graduated from Clear Creek Baptist College and also attended the University of Kentucky. He was a Southern Baptist minister for 35 years, and served as pastor at: Fonde Baptist Church in Fonde, Ky.; Elkhorn City Baptist Church in Elkhorn City, Ky.; Faith Baptist Church in Caney, Ky.; Hinson-s Crossroads Baptist Church in Fair Bluff; and Pine Crest Baptist Church in Andrews from 1994 until 1998. Rev. Brooks was a member and deacon at the First Baptist Church in Andrews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 6 at the First Baptist Church in Andrews. Officiating will be the Rev. Donald P. Sapp.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Aug. 5 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Andrews.
Surviving are his wife: Marilyn Brooks of Andrews, S.C.; two sons: Tom Brooks of Hampstead and Ted Brooks of Andrews; two daughters: Terri Salyer of Beckley, W. Va. and Peggy Jenkins of Cerro Gordo; five brothers: Eddy Brooks of Melbourne, Fla., Fred Brooks of Canton, Miss., Raymond Brooks and Gary Brooks, both of New Palestine, Ind., and Bobby Brooks of Olney, Ill.; four sisters: Jane Lee of Melbourne, Fla., Margie Camden of Petersburg, Ind., and Susan Montgomery and Patty Bowman, both of Indianapolis, Ind.; and six grandchildren.

CLARENDON - George Lacy Hinson Jr., 76, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Columbus County, the son of the late George L. Hinson Sr. and Mattie Mae Cribb Hinson.
Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 6 at 2 p.m. at Beaverdam Freewill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jackie Godwin with interment in the Hinson Cemetery.
He is survived by three sisters: Ruby Spivey, Virgie McPherson and Janice Powell, all of Clarendon; three brothers: E.T. Hinson and Gene Hinson, both of Clarendon; Elbert Hinson of High Point.

CLARKTON - Harold William Sargent, 67, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 at his residence. He was retired from the United States Air Force.
Final rites were held Saturday, Aug. 7 at White Plains Presbyterian Church by the Rev. James Bartley. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife: Goldie C. Sargent; one son: Harold Sargent Jr. of Tray, Ohio; three daughters: TSgt. Catherine Elson of Headland, Ala., Brenda Sargent of Ozark, Ala., Elizabeth Chambliss of Cottonwood, Ala.; one brother: David Sargent of Conners, Ind.; and 11 grandchildren.

NEW HAVEN, CT - Barm Jacobs, 80, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran.
Final rites were held Sunday, Aug. 8 at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Freeman by the Rev. Charles Jacobs Jr. Interment, with military honors, followed in the Freeman Community Cemetery.

KILIAN UEBEL

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Kilian Uebel, 96, formerly of the Old Dock community, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 in the hospital under the kind care of Hospice.
He was born in Theinheim, Germany Oct. 25, 1907. He had five brothers and a sister. He arrived in New York City during the start of the Depression with $7 in his pocket. He worked hard at various jobs before he established his own butcher shop. He became a United States citizen in 1934. After his retirement, he moved to North Carolina and lived in Old Dock for 30 years.
He is survived by two sons: Robert Uebel of New York and James Uebel of Whiteville; a daughter: Josephine of New Mexico; 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Anna Elizabeth Schorn; a grandson, his parents and his siblings.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. His interment will be beside his wife in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hospice, The American Cancer Society or to a charity of one-s choice.

LAKE WACCAMAW - Randolph Antone, 51, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2004 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, Aug. 7 at Little Wheel of Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Lake Waccamaw, by the Rev. James Fullwood. Interment was in Cutler Cemetery. S & L Goodwill Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Ahvon Antone of the home; a son: Timothy Antone of Wilmington; a daughter: Miranda Antone of Greensboro; his mother: Carrie Lee Antone of Lake Waccamaw; a brother: Rudolph Antone of Lake Waccamaw; and three sisters: Pennie Richardson and Mary Daniels, both of Lake Waccamaw and Sharon Andrews of Winston-Salem.

ASH - Marshall Eugene Long, 56, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004 in Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, Wilmington.
He was born Sept. 30, 1947 in Catawba County, the son of the late Marshall and Daisy Ervin Long.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday, Aug. 8 in the Long Family Cemetery by the Rev. Charlie Smith and the Rev. Morris Worley. Brunswick Funeral Service handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Sellers Long; two sons: Alex Long and Gregory Long, both of Whiteville; a sister: Debra Fowler of Ash; and five grandchildren.

CLARKTON - Marion Smith Clark, 73, formerly of Charlotte, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004.

TABOR CITY - Lillie Mae Fowler, 67, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at her home.
She was the daughter of the late Brice L. Watts and Isabell Strickland Watts and the widow of Edwin Fowler.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, Aug. 8 at Carolina Baptist Church. Interment was in the church cemetery. Inman Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by three sons: Ronnie Dale Fowler of Tabor City, David Wayne Hadden of Roanoke, Va. and Billy Wayne Spivey of Norfolk, Va.; a daughter: Dianna Larrimore of Tabor City; two sisters: Nell Sizemore of Sumter, S.C. and Sally Kalin of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

HALLSBORO - George P. Wilson, 61, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004 at his sister-s home in Whiteville.
He was the son of the late George Prosise Wilson and Margaret Brown. He was a tobacco buyer for Lorillard Tobacco Company and was a member of Hallsboro Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He also worked with the Royal Ambassadors Group at Hallsboro Baptist Church.
Final rites were conducted Monday, Aug. 9 at Hallsboro Baptist Church by the Rev. Ed Vogt. Interment was in Flynn Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jaime Wilson of Hallsboro; two daughters: Julie Waldrop of Charlotte and Dixie W. Light of Biloxi, Miss.; two sons: George Paul Wilson Jr. of Charlotte and Jonathan Wilson of New Orleans, La.; six sisters: Kitty W. Weisner of Greensboro, Dixie W. Rogers of Graham, Pat W. Norris and Carolyn W. Baldwin, both of Whiteville, Margaret W. Phillips of Landrum, S.C. and Betty Rose W. Tarbox of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother: Barry Wilson of Charleston, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Aug. 11 at Carolina Baptist Church by the Rev. Ricky Donaldson. Interment was in the Carolina Cemetery in Green Sea, S.C. Inman Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

She was born March 18, 1905 in Decatur County, Ga., the daughter of the late Edward Bill Perry and Margaret Jane Williams Perry and was the widow of James B. Barwick. She was a member of First Church of God in Bainbridge, Ga., attended Bolton Baptist Church and was a WMU member.
Final rites were conducted Thursday, Aug. 12 at Ivey-s Funeral Home Chapel in Bainbridge, Ga. by the Rev. Donna Bevels. Interment was in the Oak City Cemetery, Bainbridge, Ga. Peacock-s Chapel In The Pines handled the local arrangements.

BALTIMORE, Md. - Maurice LeAudrey Powell, Sr., 61, formerly of Hallsboro, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 at Gilchrist Hospice Center in Baltimore, Md.
He was the son of Kathleen Pridgen Powell and the late Hosea James (H.J.) Powell of Hallsboro. He was formerly married to Priscilla Thomas and to this union two sons and two daughters were born. He was preceded in death by a sister, Denise Floyd Powell, and a brother, James Jerome Powell Sr.
Maurice was raised in Hallsboro, attending and graduating from Artesia High School in the Class of 1961. Maurice loved to sing and was a member of the Artesia High School Glee Club where he proudly sang tenor with his brother -Rico- and his many childhood friends.
Maurice was a hard worker and a fast worker, working on the family farm and farms of others during the tobacco season. He didn-t mind working, and as he worked, he made many friends by showing himself friendly and by being a friend.
While living in Columbus County he held employment with Piggly Wiggly Supermarket, Col. County Hospital, Ralph-s Alignment, Black-s Tire Service and Dawsey-s Nursing Home. After relocating to the Washington, D.C.-Maryland area, he held employment with People-s Congregational Church, Silver Springs Tires and Murray-s Auto Clinic in Silver Springs, Md.

WHITEVILLE - James Patrick McCloughy, 86, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at Shoreland Nursing Home. He was the son of the late James McCloughy and Mary Ann Connely McCloughy.
He was a retired supermarket manager having worked for Acme Markets in New Jersey for 30 years.
McCloughy was a World War II veteran serving with the combat engineers of the 5th Army in North Africa, Po Valley, Rome, Arno, Sicily, Naples, Foojia, and Tunisia.
Final rites will be held Friday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Jim Byrne, OSFS officiating with burial following in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.

WOODSTOCK, Va. - Rev. Frank Albert Elliott, 88, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at his residence.
He was born Feb. 22, 1916 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late Hale Getty and Ruth Long Elliott. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, a son, James Hale Elliott; and four sisters: Martha Gardner, Mary E. Elliott, Ann Johnson and Lois Futrell.
He grew up in the Catskill Mountains of New York in Delhi, Franklin and Goshen.
After obtaining a degree in forestry from N.Y. State College of Forestry, 1993-37 B.S., he worked on paper plantations in North Carolina and Virginia from 1937-1954. His career was interrupted in 1941 by World War II. He served with training troops for the D-Day invasion and on the front lines in Europe working in aerial surveillance and intelligence interpretation until 1945. He was a Lt. Colonel and continued his work with the Army in the Army Reserves.
After the war, he returned to his work as a forester in North Carolina where he met and married Maggie Jackson Smith. They later moved to Emporia, Va. to work with Johns Manville. In Emporia, he was called to the ministry and attended Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va., 1954-57 and was ordained on July 7, 1957, Wilmington Presbytery. His first church was in Wilmington at Bethany Presbyterian where he served from 1957-61. He served at First Presbyterian Church in Lincolnton, 1961-1969, Central City Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, Mo., 1969-1976. After Kansas City he was a pastor in Southport and retired in December 1980. He filled interim pastoral posts in Wilmington and other places and helped organize a church in Calabash.
He is survived by a sister: Jane Elliott of Hume, Va.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19 at First Presbyterian Church in Whiteville. Burial will follow in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Shelby and the son of the late Michael L. Borders and Dona Cline Borders of Shelby. He was preceded in death by a brother: Ambrose Borders, and by three sisters: Bernice Hamrick, Hessentine Johnson, and Laura Mae Self.
He is survived by two sisters: Mary Sue Carroll of Wilmington and Cleo Worrell of Shelby; a brother: Cline W. Borders of Shelby.
Borders was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his license from the Board of Pharmacy in 1943. He was licensed to practice pharmacy in both North and South Carolina and was a member of the Golden Mortar KAPPA Pharmaceutical Fraternity for 50 years. He served in World War II as a pharmacist in the European, African and Middle East theaters. He served as pharmacist in Chadbourn until his retirement.
He was a member of Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church of North Myrtle Beach. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Surf Club of Myrtle Beach and the Whiteville Country Club.
A memorial service will be held at Lee Funeral Home in Little River, S.C., on Tuesday, Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends after the service. Interment will be at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 5 p.m.

Bishop Rising was born April 5, 1942 in Wilmington and was a son of Clara Hewitt Rising and the late Charles W. Rising. He was a minister for the Church of God of Prophecy, having served churches in Columbia, Raleigh, Michigan, Hawaii, and Germany. He was a builder of churches in Whiteville and Winnabow.
He served as minister of the Walterboro Church of God of Prophecy from 1980-1984. He received his Honorary Doctrine in Divinity and served his country in the United States Air Force and also worked in the prison ministry. His favorite pastime was playing golf.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Aug. 16 in the Brice W. Hendron and Sons Funeral Homes, Walterboro Chapel with Bishop Kenneth Baker and the Rev. Doctor H.B. Grimes officiating. Interment will be private.

He was born Nov. 22, 1937, son of Sara Eutsler Sledge and the late Thomas Dean Sledge. He was a longtime youth baseball coach and high school sports official in the Columbus County area and lifetime member and past president of the Whiteville Optimist Club. For the past 17 years, he owned and operated Bill's Dawg House Restaurant in Ocean Isle Beach.

LORIS, S.C. - Myra Lee Vereen McNatt, 63, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004 after an illness.
She was preceded in death by a son, Martin Leon McNatt and a sister, Joyce Vereen Abston.
She was born in Conway, S.C. to the late Arthur and Leona Vereen. With her husband of 45 years, Ralph L. McNatt, she lived in Austin, Texas, Biloxi, Miss., Wilmington and Seattle, Wash. After his retirement from the Air Force, they settled in Hanna, Okla., where she was a member of the school board. When they returned to South Carolina in the 1980s, Myra fulfilled her dream of graduating from college and becoming a registered nurse. She worked at Loris Community Hospital until her failed health forced her retirement.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters: Lynn Layton of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and JoyLe Nealy of Loris, S.C.; a sister: Gail Vereen Perry of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother: Arthur Wayne Vereen of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; five grandchildren: and two great-grandchildren.

WILMINGTON -- Charles R. -Uncle Chuck- Horrell, Master Sgt., USAF (Ret.), died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at his residence. He was the cousin of Marian Stevens of Whiteville.
He was born Sept. 15, 1930, in Rowan, the son of the late Nathaniel and Estella Barnhill Horrell. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Windell Horrell.
He was a member of Winter Park Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years before retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. After his retirement from the Air Force he worked as Director of Operations for McDonalds for twenty years before retiring again.
He is survived by his wife, Thetus C. Horrell; four children: Steven Horrell of Tennessee, Anthony Horrell of Maryland, Gregory Horrell of Arizona and Michelle Horrell of Florida; four step-children: Debbie Atkinson of Salisbury, Michael Atkinson of Hendersonville, David Atkinson, Jr. of Florida and Pamela Reyes of Wilmington; and eight grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Arcie Davenport.

WHITEVILLE - Thurman M. Stanley, 71, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
He was the son of the late Sam P. Stanley and Bessie Long Stanley.
He was a member of Brunswick Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Aug. 25 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel by the Reverends Merle Johnson and Vernon Williamson. Interment was in the Stanley Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

She was born April 5, 1922 in Columbus County, a daughter of Luke High and Beulah Page Green. She was a retired homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Joseph B. Fipps.
Final rites were conducted Monday, Aug. 30 at Family Funeral Care Chapel, Thomasville, by the Rev. Mel Anderson. Interment was in Holly Hill Memorial Park. Family Funeral Care of Thomasville handled the arrangements.
She is survived by three sisters: Lula Floyd of Fairmont, Fay Hayes of Cerro Gordo and Ruby Blackwell of Matthews.

REV DELMAR T -BUDD- GRIFFIN
WWII veteran, minister
MONROE - The Rev. Delmar Theron -Budd- Griffin, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004 at Hospice House #2 in Monroe, following a brief illness.
He was born Aug. 31, 1922 in Union County, a son of the late Ellis Rowan Griffin and Ella Starnes Griffin. He was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter.
Following graduation from Prospect High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for two years. He served in the Pacific Theater and was present at the historical flag raising at Iwo Jima. He was called into the gospel ministry at the age of 31 and continued his education at Wingate Junior College, Southeastern Theological Seminary and Luther Rice Seminary. -Preacher Budd- served in several churches in his 50 years of ministry including Oakdale Baptist Church in Whiteville and Lennons Crossroads Baptist Church in Bladenboro. He spent his retirement visiting the sick and shut-ins.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, Aug. 31 (which would have been his 82nd birthday) at 2 p.m. at Sandy Ridge Baptist Church by the Reverends Eddie Powers, Bobby Wallace and Richard Myers. Interment will be in Lakeland Memorial Park with full military honors. McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Watkins Griffin; a son: Ronald Griffin of Monroe; three sisters: Irene Walters, Mildred Smith and Zulee Gay, all of Monroe; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday, Aug. 30 from 6-9 p.m. in the Sandy Ridge Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

CRUSOE ISLAND - Rowe L. Etheridge, 80, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004 in Wilmington.
He was born Jan. 8, 1924 in Columbus County, the son of the late Harvey and Lawrence Long Etheridge and was the widower of Hattie Long Etheridge. He was a member and deacon of Magnolia Baptist Church and was retired from Penn Ventilation. He was formerly employed by BEMC.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church by the Ervin Etheridge, the Rev. O-Lease Boyd and the Rev. Leroy Long. Interment will be in the Etheridge Cemetery. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by three daughters: Willa Dean Etheridge and husband Jackie of Crusoe Island, Betty Ann Gore and husband William of Crusoe Island and Nancy Varney and husband Michael of Wilmington; two brothers: Thomas Etheridge and Harvey Elmer Etheridge, both of Crusoe Island; two sisters: Odie Long of Crusoe Island and Alda Sarvis of Florence, S.C.; three grandsons: Jerry Etheridge, Billy Gore and Timmy Gore; and one granddaughter: Sarah Elizabeth Varney.
