John Wesley Shaw was born 15 November, 1865, the son of Duncan Campbell Shaw (1818 - after 1886) and Sarah Anne West (1832 - 1902). Duncan Shaw was originally from Moore County and moved to Bladen County in the early 1850's. They lived in Turnbull Township.

John Wesley Shaw married Estelle "Stella" Sykes on 4 August, 1887 at the home of her parents John Wesley Sykes (1829-1915) and Susan Elizabeth Tatom (1842-1911) in the present day Ruskin community. Estelle Sykes was born 11 June, 1868 and died 2 May, 1953.

John Wesley Shaw died at a young age on 22 July, 1893. It is said that the family was living in the South Carolina at the time. Estelle married a second time to John Quincy Britt (1860-1936) on 23 July, 1896.
