{"id":1827,"date":"2016-01-24T11:22:35","date_gmt":"2016-01-24T17:22:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/washington\/?p=1827"},"modified":"2016-01-24T11:22:35","modified_gmt":"2016-01-24T17:22:35","slug":"will-of-john-newberry-i-1759-1818","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/washington\/will-of-john-newberry-i-1759-1818\/","title":{"rendered":"Will of John Newberry I (1759-1818)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN: I <strong>John Newberry<\/strong> of the county of Washington and State of North Carolina, being of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God for the same do make &amp; ordain this my last will &amp; Testament in manner &amp; form following, vis: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">First, I desire all my just debts to be paid and the rest of my property I dispose of as follows: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I give to my loving wife<strong> Mary<\/strong> one bed and furniture and chest, I lend the plantation I now live on to her life time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I give to my loving son <strong>Stephen Newberry<\/strong> Thirty Dollars. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I give to my loving daughter <strong>Polly Snell<\/strong> one judgement that <strong>Samuel<\/strong> \u2014 obtained against me and <strong>Isam Snell<\/strong> for twenty eight dollars which is already paid. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I give to my loving son<strong> James Swain Newberry<\/strong> and <strong>Abraham Newberry<\/strong> all the land I have on the sound which I purchased of<strong> Joseph Parramore<\/strong> and <strong>Stephen Swain<\/strong>, senr. to be equally divided between them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I give to my son <strong>Samuel Newberry<\/strong> the land I bought of <strong>Jnc. Freeman<\/strong> joining <strong>Nathan Smith<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I give to my sons <strong>John<\/strong> and <strong>Joseph Doctorine Newberry<\/strong> after the death of my wife <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">the plantation whereon I now live and the swamp joining the same with the lands I <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">bought of <strong>Gideon Alexander<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I give to my daughter <strong>Betsey &amp; Joanna Newberry<\/strong> one bed and furniture each one chest each, also to my daughter <strong>Betsey<\/strong> one cow &amp; yarling, and to my daughter <strong>Joanna Newberry<\/strong> one cow, and my said daughter <strong>Betsey<\/strong> I give one negro man<strong> Jinne<\/strong> and my daughter<strong> Joanna<\/strong> a negro named <strong>Barake<\/strong>. If in case the above negroes should die or either of them my will and desire is that they should have another if <strong>Rose<\/strong> has any children living, and my will and desire is that my negro man shall be hired out six year and the money converted to the use of schooling, <strong>John<\/strong>, <strong>Joseph<\/strong> and <strong>Joanna Newberry<\/strong> and the raising of Joanna till she is twelve year old. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I lend my negro <strong>Rose<\/strong> to my wife a year then my will is that my negro <strong>Rose<\/strong> and her increase this is not given away and negro man Jim to equally divided between my loving wife <strong>Mary<\/strong> and <strong>James S. Newberry, Abraham Newberry, Samuel Newberry, John Newberry<\/strong> and<strong> Joseph Doctorine Newberry. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My will and desire is that after my just debts being paid the balance of my property not mentioned to be sold at six months credit to be equally divided between my loving wife <strong>Mary<\/strong> and <strong>Abraham Newberry, Joseph Newberry<\/strong> and <strong>Joanna Newberry<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I constitute and appoint my loving sons<strong> James S.
