It lies in the eastern part of North Carolina. Plymouth, is the county seat.<\/p>\n<p>Being on the Roanoke River and near the Albemarle Sound, Plymouth&#8217;s prime importance was as a port. During the early 1800&#8217;s Plymouth was one of 6 main ports in North Carolina and ranked 9th in population among towns.\u00a0Plymouth was incorporated in 1807. In 1823 the Washington County court house was moved from Lee&#8217;s Mill to Plymouth.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbor counties are:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/bertie\">Bertie<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/beaufort\/ncbeau.htm\">Beaufort<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/hyde\/HYDE.HTM\">Hyde<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/martin\">Martin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/tyrrell\/TYRRELL.HTM\">Tyrrell<\/a>\u00a0counties, and the Albemarle Sound<\/p>\n<p>The USGenWeb and NCGenWeb projects are maintained by volunteers.
