Petition January Term 1844 by Matilda Wynne, widow of the late Silas Wynne, praying the laying off of the years allowance for herself and her three children.

Laying off of the years allowance of Matilda Wynne, widow of Silas Wynne deceased on 1 Feb 1844 by Saml. Rogers, Soloman Hassell & Richard Davenport.

Bond dated 26 [blank] 1846 in the amount of $2,500 dollars appointing John Dunbar guardian of Thos. Wynne, Harriet Wynne & Eliza Wynne orphans of Silas Wynne deceased, securities.

Audit and settlement of the estate of Silas Wynne on 16 Oct 1846 by Saml. Rogers, D. S. Godfrey & Silas Davenport. Total amount due the estate found to be $441.55.

Petition January Term 1848 of Joshua Hassell and wife Matilda who was late the wife of Silas Wynne and has since his death intermarried with said Joshua. Said Silas at his death was seized and possessed of 200 acres joining Soloman Hassell, Robert Wynne & Starkey Hassell and left three children, Thomas, Harriet & Eliza, as his heirs whose guardian is John Dunbar. Petitioners pray thay dower in said land be allotted.

Court order January Term 1848 to summon a jury and lay off the dower of Matilda Hassell, late the wife of Silas Wynne but now intermarried with Joshua Hassell Junr.

Laying off of the dower of Matilda Hassell in the lands of Silas Wynne deceased on 17 Feb 1848 by Jordan L. Jones sheriff and a jury including Henderson Lewis, Thos. B. Myers, Jordan Davenport, Uriah Spruill, Eli Spruill, B. B. Hathaway, Soloman H. Sample, Enoch Davenport, Joseph Davenport, Benj. T. Sikes, Isaac Walker & Jas. S. Sutton. She recieved 65 acres including the buildings and joining Stark Hassell.

Petition October Term 1848 of Joshua Hassell and Matilda his wife in right of said Matilda, Thos. Wynne, Harriet E. Wynne & Mary Eliza Wynne by their next friend and guardian, John Dunbar, show that Silas Wynne died intestate leaving Matilda his widow who has since intermarried with Joshua Hassell one of your petitioners and three children, the above named Thos., Harriet & Mary Eliza Wynne. Petitioners are tenants in common of four negros to which they became entitled as distributees of Silas Wynne and your petitioner, Joshua Hassell, is entitled in right of his wife Matilda to a child's share or 1/4 of said negros. They also say it would be better for the remaining 3/4 to remain as common property of the children. They pray division of said negros.

Valuation of the negros belonging to the estate of Silas Wynne on 25 Dec 1848:
Jordan valued at $550
Alfred valued at $650
Caroline valued at $400
Nelly valued at $450
Total value is $2050
Each share is $512.50
Woman Nelly was drawn by Joshua Hassell and the guardian John Dunbar pays him $62.50.

Court decree at January Term 1849. Negros belonging to the estate of Silas Wynne are Jordan, Alfred, Caroline & Nelly. Negro woman Nelly is set off to Joshua Hassell and wife Matilda and the remaining negros are common property of the children. Children's estate pays Joshua Hassell $62.50.

Bond dated 28 Jan 1850 in the amount of $5,000 appointing John Dunbar guardian to the heirs of Silas Wynne deceased viz. Harriet, Thos. & E. Wynne, securities.

Bond dated 25 Jan 1853 in the amount of $7,000 appointing John Dunbar guardian to Thos. Wynne, Harriet Wynne & Mary E. Wynne, children of Silas Wynne, securities.

Bond dated 22 Jan 1855 in the amount of $10,000 appointing John Dunbar guardian to Thomas, Harriet E. & Mary E. Wynne minor orphans, Soloman Hassell & Henderson Lewis securities.

Guardian account of John Dunbar for Mary Eliza Wynne settled 20 May 1858. Ward due $748.44. [Covers all years and has many names.]

Guardian account of John Dunbar for Thomas Wynne settled 17 Nov 1859. Ward due $1,314.34. [Covers all years and has many names.]

Guardian account of John Dunbar for Harriet E. Wynne settled 1 Jan 1861. Ward due $927.46. [Covers all years and has many names.]

Petition July Term 1860 of Andrew J. Pennington and wife Mary Eliza, Henry B. Norman and wife Harriet E. and Eli Spruill who are seized in equal proportion as tenants in common of a tract of 200 acres on the west side of Scuppernong River joining Sol. Hassell, Charles Davenport, Mahala Godfrey, Eli Spruill & Daniel Woodley that descended to Mary Eliza Pennington, Harriet E. Norman & Thomas Wynne from their father Silas Wynne. Petitioners pray an order to divide this land so they may own their share in severalty.

There are other documents in this file that deal with the hire of negros and recovery of debts to the guardian as late as 1867.

Wynne security; Joshua Hassell Jr. to Matilda Wynne on 30 Dec 1847, Paul Thoroughgood security; Andrew Jackson Pennington to Mary Eliza Wynn on 1 Apr 1858, John Dunbar security; and Norman, H. B. to Harriet E. Wynn on 8 Dec 1859, R. J. Hassell security; and Thomas Wynne to Elizabeth A. Hassell on 19 Jan 1860.

Silas Wynne was the son of Robert Wynne. See the 1852 will of Robert Wynne for additional information. There you will find that John Dunbar was married to Silas' sister, Harriet.
