WARD, JOHN

Minutes
Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions

April Session 1816

Ordered by the court that Thomas Hopkins bring before the justices at July term next Jno. Ward, Ezekiel Ward, and Anthony Ward orphans of Anthony Ward.

Transcriber's Notes:

It would appear that this could be the same Anthony Ward who wrote his will in 1797 citing his wife Elizabeth, sons John & William and daughters Abigale, Jane, Rachel & Mary. However, the 1800 census shows an Elizabeth Ward with two sons and four daughters, an old Anne Ward and a young John Ward. The 1810 census then shows an Anthony Ward and a John Ward with two young sons. There is no Ward listed in the 1820 census other than Anthony Ward.

Apprentice bonds show that the above children were the sons of Charity Ward and were all initially apprenticed in 1816 to Joshua Swain. Ezekiel was apprenticed to Anthony Ward in 1818.

Tyrrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of John Ward to Charity Smith on 22 Jan 1797, John Smith security. Based on this and the foregoing it appears the court minutes may have been in error and the children were orphans of John Ward instead of Anthony Ward.
