Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions


November Session 1775

Ordered that Joseph Whedbee Esqr. be appointed administrator of the estate of Owen Williams deceased & gave security John Warrington & Benjamin Spruill Esqrs. security in the sum of 200 pounds & the said Joseph Whedbe took the oaths appointed by law for his qualification & that the Secretary have notice that letters may issue.

Ordered that Joseph Whedbee Esqr. sell the perishable part of the estate of Owen Williams & make return to this court.

February Session 1776

Joseph Whedbe Esqr. returned into court on oath an inventory of the estate of Owen Williams deceased.

February Session 1777 {There is a 1/2 year gap in court minutes prior to this}

John Warrington exhibited an account of sales of Owen Williams deceased in open court and proved the same and ordered to be filed.

October Session 1783

Ordered that Col. John Warrington be and is appointed guardian to the orphans of Owen Williams deceased Thomas and Mary Williams = names of the said deceased orphans and give bond in 1,000 pound specie Joseph Spruill & Joseph Wyatt Esqrs. securitys.

Col. John Warrington prayed an administration on the estate of Owen Williams deceased granted & gave bond in 1,000 pounds specie Joseph Spruill & Joseph Wyatt Esqrs. securitys.

January Session 1784

Appeared in open court Henry Norman Depy Sheriff and exhibited an account of sales on oath of the estate of a negroe wench called Jenny belonging to the estate of Owen Williams that is 2/3 of {unreadable} & 2/3 to the estate of Joseph Whedbee deceased amounting to 14 pounds & 6 shillings and ordered to be filed.

January Session 1785

Ordered that Thomas Williams be bound unto Henry Norman for the term of four years and ten months, and the said H. Norman is to learn the said T. Williams orphan of Owen Williams deceased as far as the rule of three and read and write, also the art and mistry of a cordwinder.

April Session 1786

Ordered that Col. John Warrington guardian of the orphans of Owen Williams deceased & orpans of John Sedgex have leave to sell the perishable part of the said orphans estates, the said order omitted the last term to be entered after being granted.

Ordered that the estate of John Sedgex deceased now undivided be sold by the executors of Ann Sedgex deceased & the money arising from said sale to be divided between the orphans of Owen Williams and among the heirs of John Sedgex & the executors of Ann Sedgex {unreadable} dividers divide.

January Session 1787

Ordered that the estate of John Sedgex deceased now in the hands of Col. John Warrington guardian of Thomas Williams & Mary Williams orphans of Owen Williams deceased be divided between the said orphans of Owen Williams deceased and Martha Whidbee orphan of Joseph Whidbee deceased - and that Francis Cummins, Joseph Pledger, and William Howett or either two of them divide the estate of the said John Sedgex deceased between the above said representatives of Owen Williams deceased & Joseph Whidbee deceased and make return to next court.

Ordered that Col. John Warrington administrator of Owen Williams deceased have leave to sell one negro wench named Jenny belonging to the said deceaseds estate to discharge the debts of the said deceased.

April Session 1787

John Snell Deputy Sheriff exhibited in court an account of sales of the estate of Owen Williams deceased amounting to 67 pounds ordered to be filed.

July Session 1788

Thomas Stewart and Hezekiah Spruill Esquires appointed to audit and inspect and settle the accounts of guardians administrators and administratrix accounts of the deceased estates which is accordingly done as per entrys following to wit - John Warrington administrator of Owen Williams deceased and find a balance due said deceased estate of 3 pounds, 6 shillings & 6 pence filed - John Warrington guardian of Mary Williams and find a balance due said Mary Williams of 84 pounds, 13 shillings & 9 3/4 pence - John Warrington guardian of Thomas Williams and find a balance due said Thomas Williams of 48 pounds, 10 shillings & 10 pence.

October Session 1788

On motion John Hamilton Esqr. ordered that Henry Norman be appointed guardian to Thomas and Mary Williams orphans of Owen Williams deceased in the room of John Warrington whose former securities have resigned their security-ship and give bond in 5,000 pounds Col. Joseph Spruill and Thomas Everitt Esqr. security.

Ordered that Col. Hezekiah Spruill and Thomas Hopkins Esqr. be appointed auditors to audite the accounts of Col. John Warrington late guardian of Thomas and Mary Williams orphans of Owen Williams deceased and make return to next court.

January Session 1779

Ordered that Col. Hezekiah Spruill and Thomas Hopkins Esqrs. be appointed to audit the accounts of Col. John Warrington late guardian of Thomas and Mary Williams orphans of Owen Williams deceased and make return to next court.

Ordered that Col. John Warrington late guardian to the orphans of Owen Williams deceased give up and pay to Henry Norman guardian appointed to said orphans of said deceased all the estate belonging to the said orphans.

April Sesion 1789

Ordered that Col. Joseph Spruill, Benjamin Spruill and Stephen Swain & Jeremiah Frasier or either three of them audite the accounts of John Warrington late guardian to the orphans of Owen Williams deceased namely Thomas and Mary Williams between said guardian and Henry Norman present guardian to the said Thomas & Mary Williams orphans and make return to next court.

July Session 1789

Jeremiah Frasier one of the auditors appointed to audite the accounts of John Warrington former administrator of Owen Williams deceased & guardian to the orphans of said deceased and find a balance due the said John Warrington administrator of 18 pounds, 16 shillings & 8 pence ordered filed.

Unreadable (faded) bond of John Warrington as guardian of the orphans of Owen Williams deceased at October Term 1783. The only readable portion of the bond shows the sigratures of John Warrington, Jos. Spruill & Joseph Wyatt.

Bond dated 9 Oct 1788 in the amount of five thousand pounds in which Henry Norman is asppointed guardian of Thomas Williams & Mary Williams minor orphand of Owen Wilson deceased, Col. Joseph Spruill & Thomas Everitt Esq. securities.

Summons dated 27 October 1793 for Asa Phelps to appear in court on the fourth Monday in January next to testify on behalf of Henry Norman guardian of Thomas & Mary Williams in a controversy in which Henry Norman is plaintiff and Stephen Bateman Senr. & Joseph Oliver are defendants.


Transcriber's Notes:

See the 1768 will of John Sedgex, who identifies Owen Williams as his son in law and Mary Williams as his daughter.

Tyrrell County marriage bonds show that a Thomas Williams married Joanna Spruill on 23 Apr 1794, John Marriner security.

Tyrrell County marriage bonds also show the marriage of Mary Williams to Joseph Whedbee on 15 Aug 1775, Archd. Corrie security.
