Sikes, Mary Jane, 1849


Bond dated 22 Jan 1849 in the amount of $10,000 appointing Saml. A. Truitt administrator of the estate of Mary Jane Sikes deceased, J. L. Jones & Jesse Sikes securities.

Petition January Term 1849 of Martha Elizabeth Sikes by her guardian Samuel A. Truitt and by Saml. A. Truitt administrator of Mary Jane Sikes who shows that said Martha and said Mary Jane, in her life time, and said Samuel administrator since her death were and are tenants in common, in equal proportions, in equal interests of the following slaves viz. Mose, Ayers, Mingo, Bob, Isaac, Alfred, Anson, Squire, Tamar, Chloe, Eliza, Betsy, Mary, Anaca, Charity, Maria, Little Tamar & Matilda. By the death of the said Mary Jane her share has become distributable among several distributees whereby it ia become necessary the same should be divided so that her administrator, said Truitt, and said Mary Jane shall each have one half in severalty. Petitions pray commissioners be appointed and division made of said slaves.

Account of the estate of Mary Jane Sikes by the administrator on 24 Jul 1854, examined by Saml. McClees and the administrator owes the estate $1932.32. Several amounts shown due Samuel A. Truitt in right of his wife from the hire of negros.

The 1850 Census of Tyrrell County shows the family of Samuel A. Truett (33), Olive Truett (35), Martha E. Sikes (7), Mariah A. Truett (4), Rodea C. Truett (11 mo), Hamilton McKimmy (33, laborer), Ann D. McKimmy (29), Affa Turner (23), John Turner Junr (10 mo) and John Turner Senr (25, laborer).
