Bond dated 24 Apr 1848 in the amount of [smudged] appointing Elijah Basnight administrator of the estate of Joseph Owens deceased, J. L. Jones & Jos. Alexander securities.
Bond dated 24 Apr 1848 in the amount of $8,000 appointing John H. Combs guardian to Harriet Owens, Matilda Owens & Franklin Owens, orphans of Jos. Owens deceased, Benj. Spruill & Jesse Sanderson securities.
Petition April Term 1848 of Mary Owens, widow of Joseph Owens deceased, who shows that her husband died recently and that administration upon his estate was granted at this term to Elijah Basnight. As widow of the said intestate she is entitled to a year's provision for herself and family and prays a court order.
Petition April Term 1848 of Mary Owens, widow of Joseph Owens deceased, who shows that Jos. Owens departed this life recently leaving your petitioner his widow & Harriet, Matilda, Franklin & James K. Polk Owens his heirs at law and leaving a tract of land where he last lived joining Jonathan Tweedy, the lands of Uriah Swain deceased and Alligator Creek and two other tracts of land of unknown boundaries in which your petitioner is entitled to dower during her life. Petitioner prays process and a writ of dower.
Petition April Term 1848 of Elijah Basnight who shows that administration on the estate of Joseph Owens was granted to him at the present term and that the estate is so far indebted that the debts can't be discharged with the moneys on hand and that a sale of personal property is necessary. He prays an order to sell the perishable and personal property, negros excepted.
Laying off of the year's allowance to Mary Owens, widow of Joseph Owens deceased, on 17 May 1848 by Jonathan Tweedy J. P. and Chas. P. Shepherd, John Hoskins & T. L. Hassell.
Petition to the Fall Term of 1848 of the Court of Equity by Jno. H. Combs, guardian to Harriet, Matilda & Franklin Owens infants of tender years the oldest of whom is about 18 years of age. He shows that they are seized in fee of an undivided half of 38 acres joining Jesse Sanderson, Jno. Sanderson & Wm. Mann deceased. Said land will rent for little to nothing and an offer has been made of $400 for sale of said land which is well above its value. The interests of his wards would be materially advanced by sale of said land and he prays a court order. Order was granted and the land sold to Jesse Sanderson for $420.
Laying off of the dower of Mary Owens in the lands of her deceased husband Joseph Owens on 18 Oct 1848 by Charles P. Sheperd, Wm. Morris, George Outlaw, King Hackett, Wm. J. Beasley, Jos. Caroon, John H. Combs, Jos. Hoskins, Benjamin Hoskins, Ezekiel Godwin, Turner Cahoon & James Twidy. The widow received 51 acres.
Petition October Term 1848 of Elijah Basnight, administrator of the estate of Joseph Owens deceased, who shows that after having sold the perishable estate, the monies on hand are about $240 and the debts are about $2,000, making it necessary to sell some of the negros belonging to the estate. He prays an order to sell negroes Harry, Moses, Merrick & Bannister belonging to said estate.
Bond dated 23 Apr 1849 in the amount of $1,000 appointing David Pritchard guardian to Martha & James K. Polk Owens orphans, J. L. Jones & John McCalister securities.
Petition October Term 1849 of Elijah Basnight, administrator of Joseph Owens deceased, who shows that he is still about $300 short of being able to pay off the debts of the estate. It is necessary to sell some of the negros belonging to the estate. He prays an order to sell negro boy Spencer.
Petition July Term 1850 of Frederick Owens and wife Hannah, Franklin & Matilda Owens who are infants by their guardian Jno. Combs and of Patsy & James K. P. Owens also infants of tender years by their guardian David Pritchard who show that their father Joseph Owens died in Tyrrell County some time in February 1848 and Elijah Basnight has administered upon his estate. Petitioners are desirous of having a settlement of the estate, they being the next of kin and distributees of said Owens. They pray a decree for accounting of the estate and distribution of the assets.
Petition October Term 1850 of David Pritchard and wife Mary, late Mary Owens, Benjamin Owens and wife Matilda, late Matilda Owens, Frederick Owens and wife Harriet, late Harriet Owens, Frank Owens an infant of tender years by his guardian John H. Combs and of Patsy & James K. Owens, infants of tender years by their guardian David Pritchard who show thet are tenants in common to negro slaves Eliza, John, Tom & Martha Ann. Each is entitled to one share, the wife of David Pritchard being the widow of the said Joseph Owens and the rest being children of the said Owens. There being six persons entitled and but four slaves a sale is necessary and the pray a court order for said sale.
Audit of the account of Elijah Basnight, administrator of the estate of Joseph Owens on 1 Mar 1851 by Saml. McClees, John McClees & Benj. Spruill. The estate was owed $1,865.18. Negros sold 3 Jan 1849 for $2006 and on 1 Jan 1851 for $1,209.
Bond dated 27 Oct 1851 in the amount of $2,000 appointing Alexander H. Smith guardian to Harriet, Matilda & Franklin Owens orphans of Joseph Owens deceased, Thos. J. Cooper & W. G. Armstrong securities.
Bond dated 25 Jul 1854 in the amount of $2,000 appointing Alexander H. Smith guardian to Franklin Owens minor orphans, Gilbert L. Owens & John A. McCalister securities.
Bond dated 23 Oct 1854 in the amount of $2,000 appointing David Pritchard guardian to James K. Owens & Patsy Owens minor orphans, Gilbert L. Owens & A. H. Smith securities.
Summons for A. H. Smith, guardian to Franklin Owens to appear at court on the 4th Monday in January 1858 for nonperformance of his duties as guardian.
Bond dated 25 Jan 1858 in the amount of $2,000 appointing David Pritchard guardian to Patsy Owens & James K. Owens minor orphans, A. H. Smith & Henry H. Holmes securities.
