Holmes, Manliff D., 1854


Petition April Term 1854 of Cynthia Holmes who shows that since the last term of this court her husband Manliff D. Holmes departed this life intestate leaving your petitioner his widow and a family to support. She is entitled to a year's allowance by Act of Assembly and prays the appointment of commissioners to lay off and allot the same to her.

Laying off of the year's allowance of Cynthia Holmes, widow of Manliff D. Holmes, on 19 Aug 1854 by A. H. Smith J. P. and Wallis Twiford, John Barnes & Valentine Creef.

Petition April Term 1855 of Abner Sawyer, administrator of Manliff D. Holmes, who states that out of the personal estate of the said Holmes after paying the widow's year's allowance he has about $30 left and the indebtedness of the estate amounts to $200 and upward. He shows that said Holmes was seized and possessed of 25 acres in Goat Neck joining Henry Holmes & Trimigan Sandlin. A sale of said land is necessary to meet the debts of the estate. He prays a court order and that copies of this petition with summons issue to the heirs at law of the said Manliff D. Holmes viz. Mary Caroline Holmes Maria Caroline Jerome B. Holmes & Martha Holmes all of whom are infants to whom he prays appointment of a guardian ad litem.

Tyrrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of Mandlif Holms to Mariah Sawyer on 2 Jan 1844, Jonathan Tweedy security; also Maliff D. Holms to Cyntha Sawyer on 10 Sep 1846.

The 1850 Census of Tyrrell County shows the household of Manly Holmes (26), Syntha Holmes (24), Mary C. Holmes (5) and Jerome Holmes (7 mo).
