Etheridge, James, 1854
Bond dated 24 Apr 1854 in the amount of $500 appointing Catharine Etheridge administratrix of the estate of James Etheridge deceased, James F. Davenport & W. W. Walker securities.
Petition April Term 1854 of Katy Etheridge who shows that her late husband James Etheridge departed this life intestate in the month of April 1854 seized and possessed of a considerable chattel and personal estate. She prays appointment of commissioners to allot to her from the crop, stock and provisions on hand a suitable allowance and support for herself and family for one year.
Laying off of the year's allowance for Catharine Etheridge and family on 12 May 1854 by J. F. Davenport J. P. and S. A. Truitt, W. W. Walker & W. D. Cooper.
Petition July term 1854 of Catharine Etheridge, administratrix of James Etheridge deceased who shows that the debts of the estate amount to abou $250 and the costs of administration will be about $40. In her best opinion and judgement the personal estate is worth about $100. Petitioner further shows that the intestate at the time of his death was seized and possessed in fee simple of 32 acres joining John Rhodes & John Etheridge valued at about $5 per acre. He owned no other real estate and said land descended to his children Elizabeth wife of Jno. Rhodes, Archibald Etheridge, Eliza wife of Nathan Brickhouse, Jno. B. Etheridge, and Sarah wife of Simmons O'Neal, heirs at law of James Etheridge. Sale of the land (except for the widow's dower) is necessary to pay the debts of the estate. She prays process and a decree for sale.
Decree at January Term 1855. Upon petition and report it appearing that Catharine Etheridge, administratrix of James Etheridge, in obedience to court order sold the land described in the petition on 25 Dec 1854 to James S. Sutton for $82. Decree confirms the sale and further orders that when the payment bond is collected that the proceeds be applied to the payment of debts and charges and report any surplus to the court so that it may be applied for the benefit of the heirs at law.

Eliza Etheridge (24) is in the household of Joseph & Mary Halsey in the 1850 Census of Tyrrell County.
The 1850 Census of Currituck County shows the household of Simeon Oneal (26), Sarah Oneal (17), Nathan Oneal (20), Wilson Oneal (3 mo), William Oneal (24), Sabra Oneal (22) and Julia Oneal (18). Subsequent census records show this to be Simmons Oneal.
