Bond executed at April Term 1847 in an unknown amount appointing Sampson Melson administrator of the estate of William N. Davenport deceased, J. F. davenport & Jos. Alexander securities.
Petition July Term 1847 of Sampson Melson administrator of William N. Davenport deceased, and Lavinia wife of said Sampson who show that the debts of the estate amount to about $300 and the costs of administration will be $50 to $75 while the assets amount to about $60 to $70 which is entirely insufficient to pay the debts. The intestates heirs at law are your petitioners and Wm. W. Chaddick and wife Mariah in right of said Mariah. William N. Davenport died seixed and possessed of two tracts of land, one of 100 acres joining the sound, Chaddick and others, the other tract of 120 acres joining Jos. Wynne & James Brickhouse. Inasmuch as the debts can't be paid without a sale of the lands aforesaid, petitioners pray a court order for sale.
Petition October Term 1851 of Elizabeth Davenport widow of William Davenport who departed this life intestate some three or four years ago. She shows that her husband left no child or children surviving him or the issue of such. At the time of his death he was seized and possessed of two tracts of land. One tract is called the Soundside Plantation containing 50 acres more or less joining Mariah Chaddick and the heirs of Major Brickhouse, it being a tract obtained by William Davenport from his mother's will. The other tract containing 120 acres joins the heirs of Henderson Sutton and the land heretofore owned by Joseph Wynne situated about a mile and a half from Columbia, it also derived from his mother's will. The heirs at law surviving William Davenport are Nancy Chaplin the wife of James Chaplin, Mariah the wife of William Chaddick, Lavina the wife of Sampson Melson and Matilda the wife of Benjamin Sikes, the said Matilda being the only child and heir at law of Matilda a sister of William Davenport. Petitioner shows that as widow of the said William Davenport she is entitled to dower in said lands and prays a court order for the same.
Bills from some creditors refer to him as Capt. William N. Davenport. There is also a note from the estate of William N. Davenport to Miller Gibson for $2 for labor on board the schooner Dolphin. So he may have been a mariner.
