Melvin Bateman, 1852


Bond dated 25 Oct 1852 in the amount of $100 appointing Chas. Bateman administrator of the estate of Melvin Bateman deceased, Wm. Craddock, Wilson D. Arnold & Jesse Bateman securities.

Petition January Term 1853 of Charles Bateman, administrator of Melvin Bateman, and of Oliver Bateman, Daniel Bateman, Andrew Bateman & Wheny/Wherry Tarkinton and wife, who show that Melvin Bateman departed this life and about $10 or $15 came into the hands of the administrator while debts of the estate amount to some $150. the said Melvin Bateman died seized and possessed of an undivided 1/7th part of a tract of land on the south side of Scuppernong River and the east side of South Fork Creek which he purchased from Henrietta Swain by deed dated 25 Apr 1851. It is necessary to sell said tract of land in order to pay the debts of the estate and petitioners pray a court order for said sale.

Tyrrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of Melvin Bateman to Nancy Tarkenton on 25 Feb 1851, James F. Davenport security.

Tyrrell County Census records show that Bateman petitioners are in their 20's with the exception of Melvin who is not to be found.
