Brickhouse, John A., 1852
Bond dated 25 Oct 1852 in the amount of $10,000 appointing John Sanderson administrator of the estate of John A. Brickhouse deceased, Henry McClees & Jesse Sanderson securities.
Petition October Term 1852 of Mary Ann Brickhouse against John Sanderson administrator of John A. Brickhouse deceased. Petitioner shows that John A. Brickhouse died about September last leaving your petitioner, his widow, entirely unprovided for by law. Her husband died leaving a large personal estate out of which she is entitled to a year's allowance for herself and family. She prays appointment of commissioners and an order for the laying off of her year's allowance.
Petition October Term 1852 of Mary Ann Brickhouse against Prescilla Brickhouse, Emily Brickhouse, Ann Brickhouse, Joel Brickhouse & Winfield Brickhouse infant heirs at law of John A. Brickhouse deceased. Petitioner shows that John A. Brickhouse died about September last seized and possessed of a tract of land on the south side of Alligator Creek joining Joseph McClees, Edmund Tweedy, A. H. Smith and others out of which she is entitled to one third as her dower. Petitioner prays a writ of dower. Flyleaf indicates service of the petition was accepted by Jesse Sanderson, guardian ad litem to the heirs of John A. Brickhouse.
Writ dated 12 Nov 1852 for the Sheriff to summon a jury to lay off the dower of Mary Ann Brickhouse in the lands of her deceased husband John A. Brickhouse joining Jos. McCleese, Edward Twidy and others a report to the next term of this court.
Petition January Term 1853 who shows that at October Term 1853 he was appointed administrator of the estate of John A. Brickhose deceased. He has sold all the perishable property belonging to said estate. The debts of the intestate after paying the widow's year' provision exceed the amount of the sales of perishable property by about 4 or 500 dollars. Petitioner prays an order to sell a negro boy named Oris belonging to said estate. Flyleaf shows John Sanderson as the administrator.
Writ dated 11 Feb 1853 for the Sheriff to summon a jury to lay off the dower of Mary Ann Brickhouse in the lands of her deceased husband John A. Brickhouse joining Jos. McCleese, Edward Twidy and others a report to the next term of this court.
Laying off of the dower of Mary Ann Brickhouse in the lands of John A. Brickhouse on 15 April [blank] by Tully Davenport Sheriff and J. M. Davenport, B. T. Sikes, Henry Bateman, J. H. Sample, Saml. Norman, Henry McClees, Wm. Basnight, Charles Johnston, Gilbert L. Owens, Jas. S. Sutton, Saml. McClees & A. H. Smith. She received 50 acres where John A. Brickhouse lived on the west side of the main road and known heretofore as the John B. Twidy tract.
Bond dated 23 Jan 1854 in the amount of $3,500 appointing Soloman Alexander guardian to Joel B. Brickhouse minor or orphan, Wm. G. Armstrong, Benja. T. Sikes & James S. Sutton securities.
Petition October Term 1854 of Sol. Alexander and wife Mary Alexander, Nelson McClees and wife Emma, Joel B. Brickhouse infant under the age of 21 by his next friend Ephraim Lee and Priscilla Brickhouse & Ann Brickhouse infants by their next friend and guardian William McClees who show that they are tenants in common of the following slaves being those which descended to them from the estate of John A. Brickhouse, viz. Harry Freeman Aaron Demps Rhoda Caroline Nance & Liza being eight in number. They desire a division of the above named negros into five parts, assigning each their share. They pray appointment of commissioners to divide said negros among them.
Petition January Term 1855 of John Sanderson, administrator of John A. Brickhouse who shows that he has sold all the chattel property of the estate and the proceeds, along with notes due, are insufficient to pay the debts of the estate. He asks the court to authorize him to sell a negro woman named Rhoda.
Report at April Term 1855 by John Sanderson of the sale of negro woman Rhoda on 5 Mar 1855 to R. A. Shield for $690 on a credit of six months.
Petition January Term 1855 of John Sanderson, administrator of John A. Brickhouse who shows that he has administered all the assets that have come to his hands and there are still debts against said estate unpaid. He prays an order allowing him to sell negro woman Chloe belonging to said estate to pay said debts.
Bond dated 23 Jan 1856 in the amount of $10,000 appointing William McCleese guardian to Emma Brickhouse, Pricilla Brickhouse & Ann Brickhouse minors or orphans, John McCleese & Henry McCleese securities.
Bond dated 29 Jan 1856 in the amount of $5,000 appointing Nelson McCleese guardian to Joel B. Brickhouse minor or orphan, John McCleese & William McCleese securities.
Promissory note of S. H. McRae dated 27 Dec 1858 to pay $146.50 twelve months from date to Henry McClees, guardian to Joel B. Brickhouse, for hire of negro boy Harry for the year 1859.
Summons dated the fourth Monday in January 1860 for Nelson Mc Clees who was appointed guardian to Joel B. Brickhouse at January Term 1856 to appear at the April Term next to renew his guardian bond and exhibit his account to the said Joel.

The 1860 Census of Tyrrell County shows the household of William McClees (35), Nelson McClees (28), Emma McClees (24), Priscilla McClees (24), Ida McClees (4), Walter McClees (1), Anna Brickhouse (20), James H. Fagan (16), Joel B. Brickhouse (11) and Henry Brickhouse (10). Is this Henry the same person as Winfield shown above?
