January 17, 1845
I, Abner Alexander of the state and county aforesaid do make this to be my last will & testament in manner following (viz) -
1st. I lend unto Samuel M. Alexander four negroes viz America, Oscar, Chloe & Jane during his life and at his death to be loaned to his children should he leave any in case the children left by him should die before arriving to the age of twenty one years or should die and leave no children after they arive to the age of twenty one years and leave no lawful issue then & in that case all the above named negros & their increase is to be equally divided between my brothers Jos. & T. H. Alexander
2nd. I lend unto my nephew Benjamin Spruill five hundred dollars to be paid to him by my exrs. when he may arive to the age of twenty one years without interest should said Benjamin die before he arives to the age of twenty one years or die without leaving any children after he arives to the age of twenty one years or should he leave children & they die before they arive to the age of twenty one years or should the said children leave no lawful issue then & in that case the above named five hundred dollars is to be equally divided between my brothers Jos. & T. H. Alexander
3rd. I lend unto my nephew Bushrod W. Alexander five hundred dollars to be paid to him by my exrs. when he arives to the age of twenty one years without interest should said Bushrod die before he arives to the age of twenty one years or die without leaving any children after he arives to the age of twenty one years or should he leave children & they die before they arive to twenty one years of age or should the said children leave no lawful issue then & in that case the above named five hundred dollars is to be equally divided between my brothers Jos. & T. H. Alexander
4th. I give unto my brothers Jos. & T. H. Alexander after my debts are paid all the remainder of my property of every kind to be equally divided between them Each here above mentioned are to pay of my debts in proportion to what are given or loaned to unto him I leave my brothers Jos. & T. H. Alexander Exrs. to this my last will & testament - Jany 17th 1845.

the hand writing of Abner Alexander and that there is but one subscribing witness thereto the court refuses to
allow probate thereof -

Petition January Term 1845 of Joseph Alexander, administrator of Abner Alexander deceased, who shows that the estate is largely indebted in the amount of about $4,000 and a sale of negros in that amount is necessary. He prays an order for sale.
Petirion October Term 1845 of Joseph Alexander, administrator of Abner Alexander deceased, who shows that for the purpose of paying the debts of the estate it will be necessary to sell 4 or 5 more of the slaves belonging to the said intestate's estate. He prays an order.
Petition October Term 1846 of Jos. Alexander, Thos. H. Alexander, Bushrod Alexander & Benj. Spruill by guardian who are tenants in common of about 15 negros which they inherited at the death of Abner Alexander, each of the petitioners being entitled to one share. Petitioners desire a division of said negros but it can't be done without injury to some of the interested parties. They therefore pray a sale be had and the necessary orders be issued.
Sale of negro Adaline on 12 Jan 1847 by Jos. Alexander to Alexander H. Smith for $300. Sale agreeable to petition filed at October Term 1846 for a division of the negros belonging to the estate of Abner Alexander. Report filed 12 Jan 1847.
Bond dated 28 Apr 1851 in the amount of $5,000 appointing Charles McClees administrator de bonis non of Abner Alexander deceased, Jesse Sanderson, S. S. Simmons & J. F. Davenport securities.
There are many documents in this file dealing with the recovery of debts owed by and to the estate.

The 1850 Census of Tyrrell County shows the household of Thomas H. Alexander (40), Mary A. Alexander (41), Sarah E. Alexander (15), William W. Alexander (14), Ann H. Alexander (13), Susan W. B. Alexander (10), Mary R. Alexander (6), Ellen D. Alexander (4) and Caroline D. Alexander (8 mo).
The 1836 will and estate papers of George H. Alexander show that Bushrod W. Alexander was his son and that Joseph, Thomas H., and Abner Alexander were his brothers.
