RAY

I believe my 3-g-grandfather was William Ray, born in the 1700's.  He may have been married to a Martha.  My2-g-grandfather is James Ray.  He had about 600 acres of land around Rowan County/Orange County.  James moved to Halifax, Virginia and bought about 400 acres of land.  I hear he was married three times and I don't know which lady is my 2-g-grandmother.  His three wives were:  Polly Younger, Elinore Hensley and Susannah Chambers.  Any help would be appreciated.  Carol

HUNT

I need to know the parents of William L. Hunt.  His tombstone states his birth as 1830, but all censuses have his birth about 1820.  He married Emiley Riley, December 8, 1848, in Orange County, NC.  Children are Mary, Thomas H. Charles W., Laretta E., James J., Susan M., Page S., Samuel, Lucy B. and John A., who are twins.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Brenda

TURNER / CATES

I have ancestors Abner Cates and Eustacia Turner who married in North Carolina in the late 1700's.  They eventually went through Tennessee toward Kentucky.  Their son, Ezekial, is my g-g-grandfather; married Elizabeth Yeargin in what is now Hopkins County, KY.  It may have been still Henderson County.  My biggest problem is that I don't seem to be able to find out who Eustacia's parents were.  Thanks,
May Jane

DAVIS / CHEEK

Robert Davis, born in 1744 in Wales, married Cibby "Sibilia" in 1770; Cibby was born in 1755.  They lived in NC near Deep River at the Sophronia/Davis farm.  They had 2 children; Stephen and Levi.  No one knows who Cibby was.  Her family supposedly lived in SC.  I've heard that she and Robert divorced and she went back home.  I think there is a chance that Cibby was Native American, as there doesn't seem to be any record for her.  Robert's second wife was Nancy Cheek.  Thanks,
Kathleen

BROWNING / HORN

Benjamin Browning, born about 1813, Pitt Co, NC, married January 26, 1833, Orange Co., NC, to Mary Ann Horn, born about 1813 in NC.  Anthony Cole was the bondsman.  It's believed that Benjamin Browning's parents were William Browning and Susanna Cannon.  It's thought that William Browning lost his farm in Pitt Co., NC, moved to Wake Co., NC and then to Orange Co., NC, after 1818.  Mary Ann Horn's parents, James Horn and Elizabeth Redding, were married April 4, 1810 in Orange Co., NC.  James Horn is the son of James Barton Horn.  Elizabeth Redding is the daughter of Thomas Redding and Mary Holloway.  Other siblings of Benjamin Browning are believed to be:  Susanna, m. to Anthony Cole;  Artelia/Artella, m. Irby Rhew;  Alvin, m. Elizabeth Louisa Rhew.  Other siblings of Mary Ann Horn are believed to be:  Stephen;  David, m. Eliza Jane Thomas;  John;  Eliza, m. Alfred R. Crabtree;  James, m. Elizabeth Whitaker;  Martha;  Nancy Jane, m. John Wardlow.  I am trying to prove the parents of Benjamin Browning and any previous generations as well as the children of Benjamin and Mary Ann Horn Browning.  Mary Ann Horn Browning is living with her brother David Horn on the 1870 McNairy Co., TN census.  A  James Browning is living with David Horn on the 1850 McNairy Co., TN census.  Possible children of Benjamin and Mary Ann are:  James;  Elizabeth, m. James D. Jones;  Thomas, m. Nancy J. Dollar;  John, m. Mary Rains/Raines?)---this is my g-g-grandfather;  Ursula Adeline, m. Thomas M. Palmer;  Stephen A., m. (1) Martha Paralee Browder, (2) Nancy Monroe.  All of these children were living in McNairy Co., TN, Ursula moved to Kaufman Co., TX.  Any help in verifying this information or adding to it will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,
Bill Browing

LOCKMAN / KIRKLAND

I am looking for any information on Anne Kirkland.  I have no information on Anne's family except that a Thomas Kirkland witnessed her marriage to Vincent Lockman, 18 Dec. 1783, Orange Co., NC.  Thomas is probably a relative, but I don't know which one.  There are land records for a Thomas Kirkland in Orange Co., NC.  The Lockmans then moved to Mercer Co., KY, maybe as early as 1788.  They moved again after 1808 and were living in Jackson Co., IN by 1816.  I haven't been able to locate anything else on Thomas Kirkland except for that brief note on the marriage.  There is a Joseph and a William Kirkland on the 1800 Federal census for Hillsborough, Orange Co., NC.  Are they related to Anne?  I, also, have no information on Vincent Lockman for Orange Co., NC except that he married Anne Kirkland there in 1783.  Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks, Mary Porter

HASTINGS

I am trying to figure out the parents of Henry Hastings, who died in 1812, aged 85, and is buried at the old New Hope cemetery.  I, also, would like to confirm his wife's last name.  Some sources say it is McDaniel or O'Daniel, but I have seen nothing conclusive.  Henry is the patriarch of this Hastings line until somebody solves the riddle of who he was and where he came from.  Also, I would like to confirm that my g-g-grandfather, James Hastings, is in fact the son of Henry C. Hastings (b. 1784, d. in Arkansas) and not Thomas Hastings, Henry's brother.  James married Mary Reeves of Orange County but I have never found a marriage bond, I would like to confirm the date they married.  Finally, my 4-g-grandfather, James Hastings, married Hannah Crabtree.  I have been told that James had another wife, Mary Wilson.  Can anyone confirm or refute this.  Thanks!
Victor Hastings

Searching for information on the Jacob Pickle and Catherine Berry family, married February 20, 1802, in Orange County, NC.  I believe that Catherine is the daughter of Robert Berry, Jr. and Mary Kemp.  Please contact me if you have information on this family.  Thanks,

CRUTCHFIELD

I am seeking information on James W. Crutchfield, born July 6, 1811 in Orange County.  I gelieve he lived in Hillsborough.  He first married Lavinia Lashley and they had one daughter, Salina.  Lavinia died either in childbirth or shortly thereafter.  He later married Sallie P. Jones.  I'm trying to find who his parents/siblings were.  He was bondsman for Calvin Crutchfield's marriage and they lived next door to one another.  I know there is a connection, but I don't know if they were cousins or brothers.  Sallie Jaones Crutchfield died in 1859 in Newton County, AR, and James died the following year in Newton County.  Any help would be appreciated.

HURST

Our ancestor, Spencer G. Hurst, was born abaout 1808 in Orange County we think.  He married Catherine Marcum (Marcom) and moved to Alabama about 1840.  We are trying to trace his parentage and have been unsuccessful.  We think perhaps his name was listed as either Hust or Hist in the NC census.  We have genealogy info about Catherine but have not been able to find anything about him.  Any information gratefully appreciated.

CAMERON / WINTERS

Searching for parents or other information on Duncan G. Cameron and wife, Nancy Winters, who married in Orange County on 5 May 1822.  Both removed to northeast Georgia after the Cherokee Land Lottery.  Duncan and Nancy were both alive in Franklin Co., Georgia at least as late as 1865.  Any clues appreciated.

McVEY / LINDLEY

Catherine Lindley, born 1794 in Orange County, NC, was the daughter of Jonathan and Deborah Lindley.  Catherine married Edward (Ned) McVey on June 13, 1822 in Orange County.  Edward McVey was born about 1796 in Springfield, NC (I believe).  The question was who was Edward's father?  In the 1790 - 1810 census/tax rolls there was Patrick McVey, Daniel McVey and a James McVey of Orange County.  Sons of Edward and Catherine were named:  Jonathan, Charles and Alfred.  There were many individuals of Scot descent in the area, of which I believe McVey was.  McVey may have also been spelled "McVay."

JACKSON / RAY

I have hit a brick wall with my 3-g-grandfather, Brice Jackson.  He was born November 29, 1802, Orange County.  He married Mary "Polly" Ray, daughter of George and Martha Ray, October 22, 1823 in same county.  I cannot find name of his parents or siblings.  His Bible states that he died on July 6, 1834.  I believe his place of death to be Tipton County, TN, but am not certain.  Any help concerning the parents or siblings of Brice Jackson would be very much appreciated.
Tami Miller

CLENDENIN

Our brick wall is the Charles Clendenin who came to Maury County, TN (died in 1848).  We cannot trace his father back in Orange County; he married Frances Armstrong, daughter of Joseph Armstrong in Orange County.

LOCKHART

I can go no further with my Lockhart family than William Lockhart, who was married 4 September 1802 to Hannah Maxwell, b. 1787, whose son was Mitchell Lockhart, b. 25 November 1804.  Can anyone give me information on William Lockhart?

NICHOLS / DOLLAR / GLENN

My ancestors are George Washington Glenn and William Adolphus Glenn.  From the 1880 for George Washington Glenn of Little River, I'm trying to connect names.  His wife for Bettie S. Glenn.  I believe she was Sarah Elizabeth Nichols.  I know the names of his children, if I am correct, Charles Gattis Glenn was named after Charles Gattis Nichols and Samuel A. Glen after Samuel Amos Nichols.  Sallie Roundtree was Sarah Wilson before she was married, also, Sarah Elizabeth Nichols' mother was Nancy Wilson, married to Person R. Nichols.  Does someone familiar with these families see or know the connection?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cathy

CLARK / NEWTON

I am trying to find the parents of Sarah Clark.  My information is that she was born in Orange County, NC, on February 20, 1768.  On January 23, 1796, she married James Newton.  They had at least three children:  James W., William C. and George.  Although I can find much information on the Newtons, the above is all I know about Sarah.
Sandy

MARIS / LINDLEY

I am trying to  help a friend find information about her family.  She applied to the DAR, through her mother, Velma Towers (George), through Revolutionary War soldier, George Maris, who married Elenor Lindley.  The DAR sent her application for membership back, stating that George Maris was a Quaker and could not be a patriot.  I am hoping that she might qualify through Thomas Lindley.  Any help would be apprciated.

DAY / HART

My husband's g-g-grandmother was Mary A. Hart, who married Thomas Day in Hartsville, TN on March 19, 1832.  Records state that they both were from NC.  Thomas died in 1835.  Mary A. Hart traveled with her son, William Hart Day and his family (wife, Elizabeth Sweatt Day, children Samuel James Day, William Hart Day, Jr. and Sallie Day) on a wagon train to Texas circa 1870.  Mary A. Hart's family history passed down has been that her family operated the ferry at Goose Creek in TN and the town of Hartsville, TN was named for them.  However, we have not been able to document the names of her parents.  We know that James Hart is recognized as the founder of Hartsville, and he married Sarah Hamilton in Mecklenburg, NC in 1788.  Names of all of their several children are not known.  This is our brick wall:  who were the parents of Mary A. Hart Day, who would have been born around 1810?  And who were the parents of her husband, Thomas Day, who would have been born around 1803?
Regarding the Day family:  We have a family letter referring to Asenith, whose nickname was Senie.  We think she may have been a sister to Thomas Day in NC.  One family member thinks Thomas's middle initial was E, but she isn't certain.  For this reason, I look at all of the Thomas Day names, all Day names, all hart names.
   Any help would be appreciated.

RILEY

My brick wall is my g-g-grandfather, who is listed in census records under various spellings:  Arless  Riley, Anless Riley and Hurless Riley.  His wife is listed as Julia A.  He was born about 1820 and she about 1825.  The death certificates for their children have been no more helpful than the census records.  In later census records this family is located in the Mangum Twp. area of Durham Co.  Any help in getting back another generation with this family would be appreciated.  I assume they link somehow to the Riley family in the Little River area.

RIDER / HART

Seeking information on William Rider, who lived in Hillsborough, Orange County.  I would, also, like to find any information on Thomas Hart, Sr.  Help for either of these two would be much appreciated.

PICKARD

Brothers, John and Henry Pickard, came to Orange County from the Mohawk Valley of New York, where they belonged to the Dutch Reform Church.  They are believed to have come at about the same time as Peter Quakenbush, also, from the Mohawk Valley Reform Church.  I'm in need of information about Henry's son, John, born about 1753, who is believed to have died in the Revolutionary War.
Katie

PATTON

I'm looking for information on Matthew McDaniel Patton.  He was born in March, 1846 in a part of Orange County that later became Alamance County.  I believe his parents were Samuel and Polly Patton.  I have not been able to find him in the census records with his parents, he is not with them when they moved to Lee Co. VA in 1860.  Matthew enlisted in the Civil War from either Lee Co., VA or Whythe Co., VA.  He was married to Sarah Clawson in Lee Co., VA in 1866.  I cannot find him in any census until he shows up in Union County, TN in 1880.  I can find no relatives in the area of Orange County at the time he was born.  Records show that Samuel Patton married (1) Nancy James (2) Una/Emma Albright in Orange County (later Alamance).  I've been searching since 1981 and have definitely hit a brick wall.

WINTERS

I have a Sabrina, Savina, Sabina Catherine Winters born 4/16/1827, Orange County, NC; died 10/15/1886, I think in Guilford County, NC.  She married William Shields Coffin 9/21/1844 in Guilford County, NC.  Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

GLENN / NICHOLS / WILSON

From the 1880 census for George Washington Glenn of Little River, I am trying to connect names.  His wife was Bettie S. Glenn, I believe she was Sarah Elizabeth Nichols.  I know the names of his children, therefore, if I am correct, Charles Gattis Glenn was named after Charles Gattis Nichols.  Samuel A. Glenn could be named after Samuel Amos Nichols.  Sallie Roundtree was Sarah Wilson before she was married.  Also, Sarah Elizabeth Nichols' mother was Nancy Wilson, married to Person R. Nichols.  Maybe someone familiar with these families may see or know the connection.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

WOLF / ALBRIGHT

For many years, I have been struggling to find given names for Sarah "Sallie" Wolf, spouse of Jacob Albright.  She was b. 6 June, 1758 in Berks Co., PA and the family moved to Orange, NC where she joined the Old Brick Church along w. Catherine Wolf in 1773.  She wed Jacob Albright on 2 Aug., 1776 in Orange.  I learned from local records that Sarah's mother was b. June of 1729 and that she was also a member of the Old Brick Church but she lost her husband in Jan. of 1794 and was referred to only as Widow Wolf.  She d. 27 Sep., 1801 in Orange.  I cannot find out much more about this family (Sarah had seven siblings) without given names for the parents.

RHODES

I am seeking information on Rhodes family from Orange County.  Samuel Rhodes and Laurene Deaver had a least 2 sons, Milton and Samuel Burton Rhodes.  Samuel died in 1825 before Samuel Burton was born 12/15/1825.  Laurene never remarried but had two more children, a girl and Wm. Burton.  Samuel Burton is my G-G-Grandfather.  At some point his family moved to Haywood County.  My Rhodes family is buried in Bethel Cemetery outside of Canton.  Milton moved to Macon, Georgia area about 1851.  Following is military record of Wm. Burton Rhodes:
"William Burton Rhodes, Orange Co., NC; 01 May 1861; Distinguished service; Confederacy; NC; 114  114 Unit Numbers; Service Record:  Enlisted as a Private on 01 May 1861 at the age of 21; enlisted in Company C, 6th Infantry Regiment North Carolina; Killed Company C, 6th Infantry Regiment, NC on 02 July 1863 in Gettysberg, PA.
Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

HOLT / LUSTER

I am looking for information on Henry Holt, my ggg-grandfather, born 1792 in Orange County, North Carolina.  I am trying to trace his mother and father and cannot find any information on them.  Henry married Dorothy Luster in 1815 in North Hampton County, NC.  I cannot find any info on her parents.  I do know that after Henry and Dorothy were married, they moved to Limestone County, Alabama in the 1820's and had six children.  If anyone knows any information about either, I would appreciate the help.

RUSSELL

John Russell:  According to his grandson, Alexander, John Russell was a weaver, who came from Ireland, took part in the Revolutionary War and then settled in Orange County.  It's possible that his middle name was Alexander. Some researchers have said that he is the John Alexander Russell who is buried at Hawfields, but he is not.  John Russell was a founding member of the Center Methodist Church in the late 1820's, early '30's.  There is a marriage bond for John Russell and Elizabeth Webb, Orange County, 1804; John Galbraith, bondsman; Isaac Holt, witness.  Elizabeth Russell and some of her children are buried at Center Methodist Church.  John may be there, as well, in one of the unmarked graves.  Their son, William, married Jane Thompson, daughter of John and widow of George Johnston.  This family moved to Arkansas.  Any information on John Russell would be greatly appreciated.

BARKLEY / BARCLAY / FINNEY

Seeking information on Rachael Barkley, b. about 1762 in Orange County, m. Dec. 13, 1783 to Joseph Finney, also, in Orange Co.  Rachael died by about 1807, when Joseph remarried (Ann Kester).  Joseph Finney and Rachael Barkley had two children:  Joseph, Jr., b. 1784 and Joshua, b. 1790.
The tax rolls list 2 male Barkleys:  Francis and Thomas.  I have been unable to find any additonal information about them to determine whether or not they are related to Rachael.
Please note that there was another Rachael Barclay who lived in Rowan Co., b. 1784, father Robert.  She married 2 other men and had other children.  This Rachael belongs to a different line.
Any information about Rachael or her possible relatives, Francis and Thomas, would be most appreciated.

CHAPEL / KINNEY

I am trying to find information about Mary Chapel.  She was married to Petter Kinney in Orange County on May 28, 1822.  They had a daughter, Sabrey, in 1823.  Mary is said to have been an extremely beautiful lady who was of Castilian descent (Spanish).  I can't find any information about any Chapels in Orange County around that time.  Would appreciate any help.  Thanks in advance.
Mary Lynn Felsberg

WOOD / BOGGAN

My 4-g-grandfather, William  Wood, was born in 1751 in Lancaster County, PA.  He and his family moved in the 1750's, and he fought in the Revolutionary War from Orange County.  He married Jan Boggan in 1781; they moved to Anson County, and later he moved to Halifax County, NC, in about 1834.  Children born to William and Jane in Anson County were:  James Ray, Joseph A., Alfred Mebane and William, Jr.  There were girls, too, but I don't know their names.  William died in Halifax County in 1837. Jane died earlier and I think she is buried in Orange County, but I'm not sure.  Would love to correspond with someone researching this family.

BLACKWELL

Trying to establish parents for Joel and Isaiah Blackwell, who first appear in Orange Co., NC in the early 1760's.  Most likely, they came in from VA, but cannot tie into any of the VA Blackwell families.  Other possible brothers are Daniel, John and Charles.  The Blackwells split up and went in various ways to Rutherford Co, NC by the 1780's or before.  Isaiah is found in Caswell Co., while Joel is found in Mecklenburg Co. and Tyron Co.  Joel was married three times in NC to a Byars, a Watson and a Doggett.  These surnames are found in VA and later in Ruthford Co.
