Jones reports that said slave &#8220;ran away from your petitioner and returned to North Carolina where for his villainous actions was Sentenced to death and accordingly executed.&#8221; He therefore prays that a resolution be passed &#8220;directing the Treasurer to pay to him a sum equal to the loss he sustained thereby.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Result:\u00a0 rejected<\/p>\n<p>*****************************<\/p>\n<p><strong>State: North Carolina Year: 1812<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Location: Nash County<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Hambleton of Nash County<\/strong> reports that he <strong>petitioned for the emancipation of &#8220;a negroe girl called Silvey&#8221; in order to carry &#8220;the Will of Abraham Bass into Execution&#8221;<\/strong> and that his prayer was granted at &#8220;the last Session Past.&#8221; Hambleton reveals that &#8220;unfortunately between the time of my petitioning to your Honourable Body and the passage of the Law the said negroe Girl Silvey was Deliverd of a Girl Child.&#8221; The petitioner therefore prays that Silvey&#8217;s daughter Violet be emancipated, placing her &#8220;on the same footting which in your Wisdom have thought proper to place her Mother in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Result: granted<\/p>\n<p>***************************<\/p>\n<p><strong>State: North Carolina Year: 1818<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Location: Nash County<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thirty-two citizens of Nash County<\/strong> find the &#8220;progress of vice and immorality, the daring thefts and Roberies daily commited, the increasing insolence of the slaves; the growing numbers and influence of free negroes and molatoes&#8221; quite alarming. They therefore &#8220;most earnestly pray that your honorable body would take the premises into consideration and so amend the present patroling laws.&#8221; They &#8220;do farther pray that a law may pass forbidding female free negroes or molatoes from intermarrying with Slaves (either with or without the consent of the owner of such Slave or Slaves)&#8221; unless the said owner\/s &#8220;give bonds with sufficient security to keep their progeny free of the parish.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Result:\u00a0 House, Senate: read, referred<\/p>\n<p><strong>Petitioners:\u00a0 John Barnes, William Bellamy, John Bisset, Wilson Collins, James Drake, John H. Drake, William Drake, Robert Eatman, James Hilliard, John Rose<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>****************************<\/p>\n<p><strong>State: North Carolina Year: 1832<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Location: Nash\u00a0 County<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Married for almost forty-seven years, Piety Tisdale prays for a divorce and alimony from her husband William Tisdale.<\/strong> Piety informs the court that she and William lived together happily for fifteen years, she explains, but then William began &#8220;to carry on speculations in negroes &amp; commenced the indulgence of dissipated habits, which grew upon him slowly but regularly for the span of fifteen years or thereabouts.&#8221; Eventually, she says, he became &#8220;brutal &amp; ferocious,&#8221; a drunk and a spendthrift, finally abandoning her and their children, one them a crippled boy, altogether.<\/p>\n<p>****************************<\/p>\n<p><strong>State: North Carolina Year: 1847<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Location: Nash\u00a0 County<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The petitioners are tenants in common of twelve slaves. She asks for a divorce and alimony, noting that Sefair&#8217;s mother has a life estate in six slaves, inherited from Sefair&#8217;s grandfather, and that Sefair is entitled to a one-fifth share of this property.
