Bell, Jr.

Posted: 10 July 2010

In Raleigh, on the 20th of May 1861, one hundred fifteen men, representing the various counties in North Carolina, voted unanimously for the state to withdraw from the Federal Union and go to war. On the next day, 21 May 1861, one hundred twenty men signed the Ordinance of Separation and listed their place of residence. While political pressure was on them, at this early moment, they were completely free men and made the decision as such. Postwar apologist writing by a few of them, especially that of Kemp Battle, centers on Lincoln’s 15 April, 1861 call for troops reducing them to only one other choice; namely, to fight against fellow Southerners. In the seven hours between 11 A.M. and 6 P.M., on that fateful day in May, this group of men, composed mostly of wealthy farmers and lawyers, led the state out of the union, into the Confederacy and began to prepare for the hostilities ahead. By that vote, it did not matter whether, a delegate had previously been a secessionist or a Union man, by their vote, they were all, unanimously, secessionist. What men do always trumps their words! From that moment forward, 20 May 1861 until 9 April 1865, in fact, until Confederate fighting men stacked rifles at Appomattox and, for some Nash County men, secured their released in late June, 1865, they were willing participants in an armed rebellion against the United States of America, and most of them did not, after the war, receive pardons by general amnesty. Rather, they fell into a special category that included all Confederates who owned property of $20,000 or more in value, served in the Confederate army with a rank of colonel or above or served in the Confederate navy with a rank of Lieutenant or above. All of the men, who fell into one of these categories, were required to apply, individually, to the President of the United States. Additionally, they were required to first go through a screening process that involved an application to and a recommendation by the Governor of North Carolina to the President. Provisional Governor W. W. Holden (May to December 1865) devoted countless hours to reading individual applications for a pardon so he could make a recommendation, on each man, to President Johnson. At this time, the relationship between the representatives in the North Carolina’s deliberative bodies, the legislature and the secession convention, and the great mass of voting North Carolineans was persistently shallow. The heavy support for the Union persisted, throughout the state, even after men from Nash County fought for the Confederacy. The representatives in these bodies must have felt boxed into making the inevidiable decisions inherent in fighting a war.

From the beginning of hostilities, wealthy men could pay substitutes to go in their place, and, after 11 October 1862, the Confederate Congress passed a law exempting any man from military service who owned twenty slaves or more. The Twenty-Slave Law was one of the most unpopular actions taken by the Confederate Congress, between October 1862 and April, 1865, and, of course, proved to be completely unnecessary. Why would any wealthy man, with twenty of more slaves and normal intelligence, choose to exercise such an unpopular option, when at his disposal, with ease, was the less provocative option of paying a substitute to go in his place? Of course, the fact that the Confederate Congress, early in the war (October, 1862), would pass such a law reveals the worrying of Southern men, possessing political and economic privilege, about their own fates and the life threatening prospect of them being required to shoulder the same heavy burden of fighting the war that fell to the great mass of less influential men from Nash County. These men of humble origins and means fought heroically in county’s three most important regiments; namely, the 47th NC Infantry, Company A, the 30 NC Infantry Company I, and the 47th NC Infantry Company D. This consistent bravery by Nash County men is evident in all of other regiments of the Confederate armed services in which they fought.

Whether this is “a rich man’s war and a poor man’s fight”; a fight driven by loftier purposes; or both is for you to decide. An important part of that determination rests on a careful reading of the published military records that are listed below for the men from Nash County. These men bore the full weight of the fighting only had voice in this decision was when they chose to fight or not. At the outset, 10 September 1861, it was a choice of free men. By the time other Nash County regiments were organized the fighting was escalating and such freedom was becoming less evident. As the war progressed, the Confederacy faced increasing internal challenges compromising the fighting of the war. The response of Confederate leaders was to develop harsher policies for use against men, and even certain geographic areas, who refused to serve or deserted. Internal cohesion, an imperative for military success, proved elusive throughout the conflict.. The mountain men of east Tennessee, an area settled heavily by Revolutionary War veterans, presented a persistent challenge to the Confederate government throughout the conflict. The magnitude of their opposition required the deployment a significant Confederate military force in the area, throughout the war, and these soldiers were never completely free from guerilla military attacks

Company I was overwhelmingly from Nash County where enlistment was heaviest on 10 September 1861.

* designates MEN and BOYS WHO ENLISTED, IN NASH COUNTY AND/OR WERE ASSIGNED THEIR INITIAL RANK on 10 SEPTEMBER 1861, two men enlisted at Camp Wyatt, near Carolina Beach, NC on 10 September 1861 [some were promoted, others were demoted depending on their performance and, of course, the usual command politics that adheres during a war.]

COMMISSIONED OFFICERS

A

* ARRINGTON, WILLIAM T., Captain [KILLED AT MALVERN HILL, VA]

ENLISTMENT: resided in Nash County or Georgia, enlisted in Nash at the AGE 40. Appointed captain on 10 SEPTEMBER 1861. KILLED: at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862.

* HARRIS, JAMES, Captain [KILLED AT SPOTSYLVANIA COURT HOUSE, VA]

ENLISTED; resided in Nash or Jones County, enlisted in Nash at AGE 27 on 10 SEPTEMBER 1861. Elected 1st Lieutenant on 1 April 1862 and promoted to Captain on 1 July 1862. KILLED: at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864.

ARRINGTON, KEARNEY W., 1st Lieutenant [WOUNDED, CAPTURED, IMPRISONED (twice), EXCHANGED]. ENLISTMENT: previously served as Sergeant in 19 NC Regiment, Company E (2nd Regiment, NC Cavalry). TRANSFERRED: to 30th , Company I when appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 22 Feb. 1863. PROMOTED: 1st Lieutenant on 14 Dec 1863. WOUNDED AND CAPTURED: wounded in the left leg and captured at Spotsylvania Court House, 12 May 1864. HOSPITALIZED; in Washington, DC on 27 May 1864, transferred to Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC on 11 Aug 1864, then to Pt.
