According to John Hansel Proctor [born: 1897], at a time when Nash County did not have many banks, Hodge Vaughan filled the void for people living in area by providing money, for interest, to pay help, build houses, barns, etc. as well as many other larger purchases;\u00a0 John Proctor remembers, when a boy, going to his Uncle Hodge and Aunt Pitie’s house, to get money to pay the help; they kept the money in shoe boxes under their bed.
