FORMATION

Mitchell County was formed in 1861 from Yancey, Watauga, Caldwell, Burke, and McDowell Counties, and named in honor of Dr. Elisha Mitchell.  The parent counties were formed as follows:


Rowan County was formed in 1753 from Anson.


Burke County was formed in 1777 from Rowan.


Buncombe County was formed in 1791 from Burke and Rutherford.


Yancey County was formed in 1833 from Burke and Buncombe.


Caldwell County was formed in 1841 from Burke and Wilkes.
McDowell County was formed in 1842 from Rutherford and Burke.
Watauga County was formed in 1849 from Ashe, Wilkes, Caldwell and Yancey.


Mitchell County was formed in 1861 from Yancey, Watauga, Caldwell, Burke, and McDowell.


In 1911, part of Mitchell County went toward the formation of Avery County.
