THE FOLLOWING LIST COMPRISES THE KNOWN BOYS AND MEN WHO DIED WHILE IN SERVICE

GEORGE A. ANDREWS – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  George A. Andrews was 20 years of age, when he enlisted in Co. F, 33^rd Regiment in Orange County on July 8, 1862 stating that he was a resident of Hyde County.   Present or accounted for until he died at Guinea Station, Virginia on Feb. 9, 1863.  Cause of death not reported.

A POSSIBLE CONNECTION REGARDING GEORGE A. ANDREWS

His family is reported to have been a farming family near Chocowinity, Beaufort County.  This is verified by the families his siblings married into.

Son of William H. and Arcenia (Arcene) Smith Andrews.  Siblings: William H., Jr. married Mary L. Joyner.  Mary E. married John T. Crawford.  Susan C. married William H. Elks.  James W. married Louisa E. Buck.

HOLLOWAY BALLANCE –  Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on Oct. 17, 1861.  Present or accounted for until March 14, 1861, when he was reported as absent without leave.  Dropped from the rolls of the company.  Reenlisted in the company on Sept. 20, 1863.  Present or accounted for until captured at or near Gravel Hill, Virginia on or about July 28, 1864.  Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, August 5, 1864.  Transferred to Elmira, New York on August 8, 1864.  Died at Elmira on November 7, 1864 of "pneumonia"

Son of Elisha C. Ballance and Louisa (Luizer) Garrish Ballance.  Siblings: Nancy, Aaron William Ballance married Lois Anne Williams.  Ocracoke

JOSHUA A. BALLANCE – Company G, 2^nd NC Cavalry  Enlisted in Beaufort County at age 43, July 12, 1861 for the war.  Present or accounted for until detailed as a nurse in General hospital, Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia on December 19, 1863.  Returned to company, November 18, 1864.

Son of Caleb Ballance, Sr. and Agnes Gibbs Ballance.  Siblings: Caleb Ballance, Jr., Thomas Ballance, Jr., Mary Ballance Gibbs Wynn and Olly Ballance.  Married 1846 to Ann Mariah Strother (Strather) of Franklin Co., NC.  Children: Harry (died in Georgia), Ann, Joshua, and Josephine. (Children were primarily raised in Franklin County, NC.)

NATHAN BOOMER – Company B, 17^th Regt. (1^st & 2^nd Organizations) Born in Hyde County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Hyde Co. at age 22 on May 2, 1861.  Present or accounted for until the company disbanded on March 26, 1862.  Later enlisted in Company B, 17^th Regiment, NC Troops (2^nd Organization).  Previously served in Company B, 17^th NC Troops (1^st Organization).  Enlisted in this company on December 25, 1862 for the war.  Present or accounted for until killed in action on August 27, 1864.  Place of death not reported.

Son of Abraham Boomer and Mahala ___.  Siblings: Zachariah (served in Company B, 17^th and Company H, 33^rd), Sarah married Isaac Solomon Voliva, and Nancy who married James Griffin Bridgeman.  [see the 1860 Hyde Co. census]

JESSE MONROE COFFEE (Caffee) – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia on or about January 6, 1863 of "pneumonia".  [see the 1860 Hyde Co., census]

Wife, Axie Pedrick.  Daughter, Margaret A. Caffee married Daniel A. Harris.  Jesse Monroe Caffee, Jr. married Nancy Jane “Nannie” Williams.

SAMUEL D. CARROWAN (Carawan) – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he died at Middleton on December 31, 1861.  Cause of death not reported. 

Son of William and Mary (Mahala) Mason Carawan.  Siblings: William E, Benjamin R. (Riley Benjamin) married Elsy Carawan.  Amanda married John Edward Hopkins (Pamlico County).

ZACHEUS B. CARROWAN (Carawan) – Company I, 4^th Regt.  Resided in Beaufort County where he enlisted at age 25 on June 25, 1861 for the war.  Mustered in as Corporal.  Died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia on June 19, 1862 of wounds he received at Seven Pines, Virginia on May 31, 1862

Son of Mannan and Rebecca McGowan Carawan.  Siblings: William Alpheus married Eleanor Sawyer, James Green married Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Chadwick, Nancy and Suella.  [see the 1860 Beaufort Co., NC census]

JAMES HENRY CARTER – Company E, 4^th Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. and enlisted at Beaufort County at age 20 on May 31, 1861, for the war.  Mustered in as 1^st Sergeant.  Appointed 2^nd Lieutenant to rank from May 31, 1862, and promoted to 1^st Lieutenant to rank from June 22, 1862.  Promoted the Captain to rank from October 1, 1862.  Killed at Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 10-15, 1862

Son of David Carter and Sarah Lindsay Spencer Carter.  Siblings: David Miller Carter (4^th Regiment) married 1^st Isabella Perry, 2^nd Harriet Armistead Ryan Benbury, Peledge Spencer Carter married Emily E. Knight, William Sylvester Carter married Mary Emily Farrow, Frances Ann Fletcher Carter married Thomas Smith Burrus, Sr., Laura Elizabeth Carter married Marcus Blackwell, Henry Clay Carter married 1^st Robena Mann Spencer 2^nd Carolina Virginia Simmons and Isaiah Spencer Carter married Mary Ann Williams.  [see the 1860 Hyde census]

HEZEKIAH CREDLE – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for through March 13, 1862.  Company records indicate he was captured at New Bern on March 14, 1862, however, records of the Provost Marshal do not substantiate that report.  Died in hospital at Mount Jackson, Virginia on or about November 5, 1862 of "diarrhoea chronic".  [Buried in Old Soldiers Cemetery, Mount Jackson, Shenandoah County, Virginia]

Son of Anson Credle and Ann Eliza _____.  Siblings: Sanford, William David married Sallie Ann Mason, Parley (Parliament) married a Hays, Francis, and Elizabeth.

WILLIAM CULLIFER – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted at age 25 on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Lynchburg, Virginia on or about June 1, 1862 of "febris typhoides".

Son of Bartlet Cullifer and Sarah ____.  Wife: Mary Elizabeth Flowers.  (Note: After William Cullifers’ death during the War, his widow married 1^st Howard Napolean Barnett, 2^nd Daniel Stanley Midgett, Jr. (Hatteras), and 3^rd William R. Whitson.)  Son: Christopher Columbus Cullifer (born 1858) married Lavina Rascoe.  Siblings: John William married Rowena Arthur Harris, Nancy Lenora married 1^st Walter Powers Lupton 2^nd Jather “Jake” Alligood.  Martha Rebecca (Dora M.) married 1^st Samuel A. O’Neal 2^nd Samuel T. Carrow.   Sarah married Mitt Alligood.

DEVOTION CUTRELL – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted at age 21 on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until killed at or near New Bern on March 14, 1862

Son of Aaron S. and Julia Quidley Cutrell.  Siblings: Charity, Nancy married Robert Henry Brinn, Prisella, Cason Gibbs married Mary Ann Daniels. and Arena.

ROBERT P. CURREL –  Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Present or accounted for through April 1862.  Reported absent sick in July -October 1862.  Dropped from for rolls of the company in March-April 1864 because he was "supposed to be dead".

Unknown family.  Living at Ocracoke, Hyde County in the household of John and Emma Pike in 1850 and listed as age 10.

WILLIAM H. [Henry] DANIELS – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted at age 22 on Sept. 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he deserted on or about March 21, 1862.

Son of Clement and Elizabeth (Polly) Sawyer Daniels.  Siblings: Henry (Company F, 33^rd), Clement, Jr. (Company F, 33^rd Regt.) married Mary Frances Thomas., Wilson, Rhoda, Joseph P. (Company F. 33^rd), Louisa (married Wilson Jones).

IVY DAVIS – Company E, 4^th Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. and enlisted in Beaufort Co. at age 24 on June 3, 1861 for the war.  Present or accounted for through December 1861 but died prior to November 1, 1863.  Place, date & cause of death not reported.  The Confederate Army Casualty List has I. Davis wounded at Fredericksburg, Virginia in May 18, 1863 during the Seven Days Campaign.  It is assumed he succumbed to his wounds between May-November 1863.

Son of John A. and Nancy Davis. (Nancy Davis’s maiden name is possibly Sawyer as an elderly woman by the name of Fetna Sawyer was living in this home in the 1850 census).  Siblings: Mordecai M. (married Elizabeth Gibbs). John M., Albert G. (Company G, 38^th Regt.) married Candace Cole.  Nancy married John S. Midyett.  Manerva married George Washington Wood. 

BENJAMIN W. EASTWOOD – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Mustered in as Corporal.  Promoted to Sergeant prior to November 1, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia on January 10, 1862.  Cause of death not reported.

Son of Lewis Eastwood and Mary Polly Ensley.  Siblings: William Benjamin Eastwood, married Louisa Gibbs, Dinah Eastwood, married Anson E. Gibbs (1856), John Lee Eastwood.  16 years of age in 1850.  [Born: Sept. 10, 1834 & Died: June 10, 1862; Buried in Richmond, VA in Hollywood Cemetery]

JOHN EMORY – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until captured at Hanover Court House, Virginia on May 27, 1862.  Confined at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor.  Paroled and transferred to Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia on July 12, 1862 for exchange.  Declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on August 5, 1862.  Returned to duty in November 1862-February 1863.  Present or accounted for until wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1863.  Company records indicate he was also captured at Gettysburg, however, records of the Provost Marshal do not substantiate that report.  Died prior to March 1, 1864.  Place and cause of death not reported.  [Records of the Provost Marshal dated May 1862, gave his age as 20.]

Son of John and Olivia ___ Emory.  Siblings: Stephen married 1^st Sarah Jarvis 2^nd Mary Jane Popperwill, Eliza, Zachariah married Eliza Mason.  William.

WILLIAM EMORY – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Mustered in as Sergeant.  Present or accounted for until wounded at Shepherdstown, West Virginia, on or about September 30, 1862.  Died on October 5, 1862 of wounds.  Place of death not reported.

Son of John and Olivia ___ Emory.  Siblings: Stephen married 1^st Sarah Jarvis 2^nd Mary Jane Popperwill.  Eliza, Zachariah married Eliza Mason.  John.

JOSIAH F. ENSLEY – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Forsyth Co. and enlisted in Hyde Co. at age 17 on October 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 1-4, 1863.  Reported absent wounded through August, 1863.  Died of wounds.  Place & date of death not reported.

Son of John Ensley, Jr. and Agnes ___ Ensley.  Siblings: Mary A. Ensley married Samuel Williams (Co. F, 33^rd Regt.)

ISAAC LITTLETON FARROW - Company H & I, 33^rd Regt.   Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Mustered in as 1^st Sergeant.  Appointed 3^rd Lieutenant on December 25, 1862, and transferred to Company I of this regiment.  Promoted to 1^st Lieutenant on August 1, 1863 and transferred back to this company.  Present or accounted for until killed at Wilderness, Virginia on or about May 5, 1864.  He was "a brave and gallant soldier". He was "always at the post of duty."

Son of Wilson Tilman Farrow, Sr. and Anna Credle Farrow.  Wife: Mary E. Bateman Farrow.  Children: Eliza B., Wilson Tilman Farrow III married Mary Respess.  Mary Ann Farrow and Eliza Farrow.  Siblings: Emeline, Eliza Ann married John Small McWilliams.  Wilson Tilmon Farrow, Jr. married Susan Ann Howard., and Edward T. Farrow married Lucretia Wahab.  Ocracoke.

EDMUND A. FORTISCUE, SR. – 13^th Regiment (Hyde Militia)  [see this page: https://www.ncgenweb.us/hyde/military/HYDECSA7.HTM]

Wife: Alice Virginia Spencer Fortescue.  Children: Edmund A. Fortiscue, Jr. married Nancy Blackwell Fisher.   Edmund A. Fortescue was age 13 in the 1850 Hyde Co., NC census living in the home of Edmund & Elizabeth Slade.  In 1860 E.A. Fortiscue is 23 and listed as a farmer with real estate worth $15,000 and personal estate worth $18,400 and 21 slaves.

BENJAMIN D. FULLER – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861. Mustered out January 15, 1862.  Died in January 1862.  Place and cause of death not reported.

Son of Edward and Elizabeth Gibbs Fuller.  Siblings: Mary, Henry, William, David.

WILLIAM  GASKILL – Company H, 33^rd Regt  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Mustered in as Sergeant.  Present or accounted for until killed at Cedar Mountain, Virginia on August 9, 1862.

 Wife, Rebecca Styron Gaskill.  Children: Joice, Julia A. (married John Gibbs), Enoch L.

EDMOND D. GASKINS –  Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Mustered in as Corporal.  Present or accounted for until  captured at New Bern on March 14, 1862.  Received at Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia on July 12, 1862, for exchange.  Declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on August 5, 1862.  Promoted to Sergeant on September 6, 1862.  Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862.  Died in hospital at Staunton, Virginia on Dec. 2, 1862 of "laryngitis" and/or "pneumonia".

Son of Benjamin and Mahettabel Gaskins.  ½ Siblings: Seth (Co. B, 17^th).  Also in the household, Alfred Rue.

JAMES V. GASKINS – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia on March 14-15, 1863 of "pneumonia".

Living in the Mattmuskeet Dist. of Hyde County in the 1850 census n the household of Selby & Ann Watson.  James was age 10 in 1850 which means is enlisted at about 21.

BENJAMIN F. GIBBS (INF) – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until killed at or near New Bern on March 14, 1862

Son of Seth Washington Gibbs and Susan Ann Swindell.  2^nd Wife, Julia Pegram.  Siblings: Alexander, Dorcas A., Sarah A., Israel (Spencer’s Rangers, 1^st wife Mary D. Gibbs, 2^nd wife Olivia Selby), Matilda (married Edward D. Jarvis).

BENJAMIN F. GIBBS (INF) – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until wounded on March 14, 1862.  Company records also indicate he was also captured at New Bern, however, records of the Provost Marshal do not substantiate that report.  Returned to duty in January-February, 1863,  Present or accounted for until killed at Reams' Station, Virginia on August 25, 1864.

Son of Cornelius S. Gibbs and Esther Gibbs Gibbs.  Siblings: William B. (Co. F, 33^rd), Hariet A., Sylvester, Wilson, Emma, Pelege S., Esther married John W. Mason.

BENJAMIN F. GIBBS (CAV) – Company G, 2^nd Cavalry.  Private.  Enlisted in Beaufort Co., NC at age 22 on July 12, 1861.  "Accidentally shot himself on picket, March 29, 1862" at Trenton, NC and died of wounds April 5, 1862.

CALEB A. GIBBS – Company B, 17^th Regt. (1^st & 2^nd Organizations)   Born in Hyde County and was by occupation a mechanic or farmer prior to enlisting in Hyde County at age 23 on May 2, 1861.  Present or accounted for until the company disbanded on March 25, 1862.  Later served in Company B, 17^th Regiment, N.C. Troops (2^nd Organization).

Previously served in Company B, 17^th Regiment NC Troops (1^st Organization).  Enlisted in this company on May 1, 1862, for the war.  Present or accounted for until killed in action on or about December 27, 1864.  Place of death not reported.

Son of Henry and Mrs. Sarah “Sally” Louisa Owens Gibbs.  Siblings: Susan H. married Benjamin Franklin Midyette. Note: Two brothers, Joseph and Stephen Owens, sons of Sally, lived in the same household.  Both served in this same company.

HENRY GIBBS – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until killed at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1863.

Highly likely brother of Thomas Melvin Gibbs.  Son of Thomas, Sr. and Eliza A. Spencer Gibbs.

JOHN B. GIBBS – Spencer’s Rangers & also Company A, 66^th Regt.  Previously served as a Private in Capt. William H. Spencer's Independent Cavalry Company, N.C. Troops.  Transferred to this company on an unspecified date (probably in February-September 1864) while a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Maryland.  Died at Point Lookout on February 17, 1865 of "chronic diarrhorea"

Son of Christopher Columbus, Sr. and Elizabeth Bonner Gibbs.  Siblings: Mary L., Selby B. 1^st married Martha Gibbs (1874), 2^nd married Mary J. Brinn Gibbs (1887), Polly.

SAMUEL STEPHEN GIBBS – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.   Mustered in as Corporal.  Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia on July 2, 1862 with a gunshot wound on the right side,  Place and date of wounded not reported.  Returned to duty on Aug. 14, 1862.  Captured at Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 13, 1862.  Paroled and exchanged on or about December 17, 1862.  Returned to duty January-February 1863.  Promoted to Sergeant in March-August 1863.  Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia on May 8, 1864 with a gunshot wound to the left foot.  Place and date wounded not reported.  Returned to duty in September-October 1864.  Present or accounted for through February 1865.

Son of Oliver and Lydia Watson Gibbs.  Married Emmaline Miller Spencer.  Daughter: Mary E., married John W. Cason.  Siblings: Cason (Spencer’s Rangers) married Martha A. Jennett, Israel (Spencer’s Rangers) married Martha Ives Saunderson.  Samuel. Zady married Benjamin S. White. 

[Samuel S. Gibbs was born March 12, 1835 and died Belhaven, Beaufort Co., NC on June 24, 1915 (see his death certificate) and is buried in Lake Landing Twp. on  Ridge Road.  His wife, Emmaline Miller (Spencer) Gibbs, is also buried there.  She was born August 27, 1842 and died in 1907.  She married Samuel Stephen Gibbs in Hyde County on April 14, 1859.  [kms]

THOMAS MELVIN GIBBS – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde Co. where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until wounded in the leg and captured at or near Farmville, Virginia on April 7, 1865.  Hospitalized at Farmville where he died on June 20, 1865 of "second hemorrhage".

Son of Thomas, Sr. and Eliza A. Spencer Gibbs.  Wife: Mary ___ Gibbs.  Siblings: Henry, Samuel. 

WILLIAM W. GIBBS – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Forsyth County and enlisted in Hyde Count on May 1, 1962, for the war.  Present or accounted for until captured at Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 13, 1862.  Paroled and exchanged on or about December 17, 1862.  Reported absent without leave in January-February 1863.  Died "in camp" on or about May 1, 1863.  Cause of death not reported.

Son of William Swindell and Priscilla ___ Gibbs.  Siblings: Agnes, Isaiah H., Frances, Ann Eliza, Mary J. and Sarah E.

NOAH GRAY – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Forsyth County and enlisted in Hyde County on October 17, 1861.  Present or accounted for until wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 1-4, 1863.  Died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia on May 15, 1863 of wounds.

Married Jane Styron in 1858.  Daughter: Martha Louise Gray married John Owens Sawyer.

WILLIAM FERGUSON GUTHRIE – Company H, 33^rd Regt. also Company B, 17^th Regt.  Previously enlisted as a Private in Company B, 17^th Regiment N.C. Troops (2^nd Organization).  Enlisted in this company in Hyde County on May 16, 1862, for the war.  Mustered in with an unspecified rank.  Promoted to Sergeant on October 1, 1862.  Present or accounted for until wounded in the left leg at Chancellorsville, Virginia between May 1-4, 1863.  Died in hospital at Wilson on July 8, 1863, of wounds.

William F. Guthrie was born in Carteret Co., NC circa 1842.  He is in the 1850 Carteret Co. census as age 8 and living in the home of Frederick P. & Mary Guthrie.  In the 1860 Hyde census he is age 17 and living in the home of Tilman F. Credle.

James C. Guthrie married Caroline Guthrie in Carteret Co., NC on July 18, 1828.

JAMES O. HAMILTON – Company B, 17^th Regt.  Born in Hyde Co. and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Hyde County at age 18 on May 1, 1862, for the war.  Present or accounted for until killed near Petersburg, Virginia on June 17, 1864.

Son of Jordan O. Hamilton, Sr. and Celia Davidson Hamilton.  Siblings:  Britana, married William Litchfield, Mary, Samuel (Co. F, 33rd, married Mary Frances Carawan and Nancy Spencer), Jordan, Jr. (Co. B, 17^th), and John (Co. B, 17^th).

ISAIAH S. HARRIS – Company G, 2^nd Cavalry  Enlisted in Beaufort County at age 23, July 12, 1861, for the war.  Present or accounted for through September 1864.  Captured in hospital at Petersburg, Virginia on April 5, 1865 where died April 14, 1865 of "gunshot wound right lung".

HARRIS – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Mustered in as Corporal.  Present or accounted for until wounded in the right thigh at Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 13, 1862.  Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia where he died on January 29, 1863 of wounds.

ZACHEUS HARRIS – Company B, 17^th Regt.  Born in Hyde Co. and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Hyde County at age 17 on May 1, 1862, for the war.  Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Petersburg, Virginia on or about August 9, 1862 of "febris typhoides".

HATCH – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until wounded in the neck at Ox Hill, Virginia on September 1, 1862.  Reported absent wounded through February 1863.  Reported absent without leave during July - Dec. 1863.  Dropped from the rolls of the company in January-February 1864.

JACKSON – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Mustered in as Private.  Promoted to Corporal in January - February 1863.  Promoted to Sergeant in March - April 1863.  Wounded in the right thigh and captured at Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3, 1863.  Hospitalized at Washington, D.C.  Paroled at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, June 25, 1863, where he was received on June 30, 1863.  Promoted to 1^st Sergeant on November 1, 1863.  Present or accounted for until killed at Wilderness, Virginia on May 6, 1864

FOSTER JARVIS, Jr. – Company I, 4^th Regt.  Resided in Hyde County and enlisted in Beaufort County at age 26 on June 25, 1861, for the war.  Mustered in as Private and promoted to Sergeant on October 17, 1861.  Captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3-4, 1863 and confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, October 15-18, 1863.  Died at Point Lookout on February 21, 1864.  Cause of death not reported.

Son of Foster, Sr. and his 2^nd wife Delilah (Delacy) Jarvis.  Wife: Elizabeth Betsy (Gatsy) Harris.  Children: Sarah E. (1858) and Foster Jarvis III (Born 1859) married Mary Jane Gowers.

LEVY M. JARVIS – Capt. Edward Swindell’s Rangers.   Receipt Roll for pay endorsed on May 13, 1863 carries the remark that he was "killed in action on March 4".

On March 4, 1863 this unit ambushed a large federal column near Swan Quarter killing and wounding a number of Yankees and having five of its men killed. The last known information was a requisition by Captain Swindell calling for clothing for seventy men. From a logistics standpoint the Hyde Rangers, were attached to the 68^th Regiment North Carolina Troops. Approximately 90 men primarily from Hyde County served in this unit.

ROBERT JENNETT – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Mustered in as Sergeant.  Died in Hyde County on October 4 or 20^th, 1861, of "typhoid fever".

Previously served in Company B, 17th Regiment (1^st Organization).  Enlisted in this company on May 1, 1862, for the war.  Mustered in as Private and was promoted to Corporal on or about May 17, 1862.  Present or accounted for until killed at or near Bermuda Hundred, Virginia on or about May 19, 1864.

LEITH – Company B, 17^th Regt.  Born in Hyde County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Hyde County at age 34.  Appointed Captain to rank from April 27, 1861.  Present or accounted for until the company was disbanded on March 26, 1862.  Later served as Captain of Company B, 17^th Regiment NC Troops (2^nd Organization)

Previously served as Captain of Company B, 17^th Regiment NC Troops (1^st Organization).  Appointed Captain of this company on May 1, 1862.  Present or accounted for until killed at Newport Barracks on February 2, 1864.  [He is buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Washington, Beaufort Co., NC]

The Confederate Reveille, Pamlico Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy [pg. 77] states "After his death at Newport Barracks his men proved their devotion to him by carrying his body six miles through tangled woods and swamps...in order to get it out of the enemy's lines".

 Son of James Leith, Sr. and Mary _____?  1840 census shows two brothers and two sisters in Hyde Co.  In 1850 census he was a “lumber getter” in Beaufort County.  In 1860 he was a large farmer in Sladesville, Hyde County.  Did not marry.  Estate passed to his collateral, maternal and sibling lines.  Siblings: Susan P. married William Watson Spencer.  James Henry Spencer was Susan P. Leith’s and William Watson Spencer’s son.  Probable brothers are Samuel and John R. Leith.

ISAIAH S. LINTON – Company B, 17^th Regt.  Enlisted in Martin County, NC on December 25, 1862, for the war.  Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Wilson on or about December 9, 1864 of "variolides".

Living in household of Benjamin O. O’Neal in 1850 census, at age 15.  Likely the son of David and Mary Elizabeth Hamilton Linton.  Likely brother David served in Co. F, 33^rd Regt.

JAMES D. LITCHFIELD – Company E, 4^th Regt.  Resided in Hyde County and enlisted in Wake County at age 18 on April 28, 1863, for the war.  Killed July 2-3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where he "acted bravely".

Son of Zachariah C., Sr. and Mary ____ Mason.  Siblings: Greene, Israel B. (Co. B, 17^th).  Do not confuse this Zachariah (age 9 in 1850) with Zachariah (age 22 in 1850).  Note:  He and his father and his cousin may have used the name “Jack” Mason.

JOSEPH J. MAY – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on November 23, 1861,  Present or accounted for until he died in hospital near Guinea Station, Virginia,  January 7, 1863.  Cause of death not reported.

Son of John T. and Ann May.  John T. May was the Agent for Gen. L. O. B. Branch’s lands in Hyde County.

ISAAC J. MEEKINS Company E, 4^th Regt.  Resided in Beaufort County where he enlisted at age 22 on June 3, 1861, for the war.  Wounded at Seven Pines, Virginia on May 31, 1862 and died "in N.C. about November 1862".  No further records.

MIDGETT – Company A, 17^th Regiment; Company B, 32^nd Regiment; Company C, 56^th Regt.  Born in Hyde County where he resided as a seaman prior to enlisting at Fort Hatteras at age 22 on August 10, 1861.  Captured by the enemy at Fort Hatteras on August 29, 1861.  Confined at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor and at Fort Warren, Boston Harbor until paroled on or about January 10, 1862 and transferred  for exchange.  Declared exchanged on February 20, 1862 and was transferred to 1^st Company B, 32^nd Regiment N.C. Troops on the same day.

Previously served as Private in Company A, 17^th Regiment NC Troops (1^st Organization).  Transferred to this company on February 20, 1862.  Present or accounted for until the company was disbanded on April 1, 1862.  Later served as Private in C0mpany C, 56^th Regiment N.C. Troops.

Previously served as Private in 1^st Company B, 32^nd Regiment N.C. Troops. Enlisted in this company in Camden County on April  2, 1862.  Reported present through October 1862.  Died in camp at South Quay near Franklin, Virginia on December 11, 1862 of disease.

BENJAMIN O’NEAL – Company H, 33rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he was reported missing at or near New Bern on March 14, 1862.  Roll of Honor indicates he died at New Bern in 1862.  Cause of death not reported.

In 1850 Hyde census, Benjamin is 12 years old and living in the household of Daniel M. Paine who was a fisherman.  He was born circa 1838 and died in New Bern, Craven Co., NC on April 16, 1862 in the Battle of New Bern  Mrs. Don W. Hanks of the Daughters of the Confederacy applied for a flat bronze military marker to be placed in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in New Bern.  Unknown family.

DAVID R. O’NEAL – Spencer’s Rangers.   Name reported on a bounty roll dated April 4, 1863.  Captured near Fairfield, NC on February 20, 1864 and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland where he died on June 22, 1864.  [see the Raid at Fairfield on Feb. 16, 1864]

In 1850 census, John (age 13) lived in the household of Jones and Julia Spencer.  In 1860 census, John (age 24) lived in the household of Daniel G. Credle as a farm laborer (Sladesville).  Some questionable information states that John T.’s parents were Southy and Dorcas Rue and siblings were Southy, Jr., Ananias, Mahala and Dorcas.

THOMAS H. SAUNDERSON / SANDERSON – Capt. Edward Swindell’s Rangers.    Private. Born: March 6, 1836 and died  March 5, 1863.  Receipt rolls remark “Captured and murdered March 5, 1863”.

SAWYER – Company G, 2^nd Regt.  Resided in Jones County where he enlisted on May 24, 1861, for the war.  Mustered in as Sergeant,  Wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3, 1863.  Promoted to 1^st Sergeant November - December 1863.  Present or accounted for until killed at Fisher's Hill, Virginia on September 22,1864.

DANIEL SAWYER – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Lynchburg, Virginia, July 1, 1862, of pneumonia

Son of Mecajah and Frances (Fannie) Mary Smith Sawyer.  Sibling: William B. (Co. F. 33^rd).  Family moved to Pamlico County sometime in the 1850’s where siblings married into the Lupton, Mozingo and other family names.

HARVEY A. SAWYER – Company G, 2^nd Regt. Resided in Jones County and appointed Captain at age 23 to rank May 16, 1861.  Wounded in the left leg and neck at Malvern Hill, Virginia on July 1, 1862 and died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia on July 15, 1862.

ROBISON/ROBERTSON A. SAWYER – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on November 8, 1861.  Present or accounted for until captured at or near New Bern on or about March 14, 1862,  Confined at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor where he was hospitalized on June 2, 1862 with typhoid fever.  Died, apparently at Fort Columbus on June 29-30, 1862.  Cause of death not reported.  [Robison/Robinson A. Jordan in Hyde County on July 15, 1856.  Martin  G. Sawyer's estate was probated in February 1860 so his marriage to Mary A. Jordan was short lived.

VALENTINE SAWYER – Company F, 33rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he died in December 1862.  Place and cause of death not reported.

WILLIAM B. SAWYER – Company F, 33rd Regt.   Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861. Present or accounted for until captured at New Bern on March 14, 1862. Confined at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor, where he died on July 19, 1862 of "phthisis pulmonalis" (consumption of the lungs).

WILLIAM ISRAEL SAWYER – Company F, 33rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861. Present or accounted for until captured at Hanover Court House, Virginia on May 27, 1862.  Confined at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor,  Paroled and transferred to Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia where he was received on July 12, 1862 for exchange.  Declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on August 5, 1862.  Reported absent without leave in September-October 1862.  Died in a field hospital on January 9, 1863.  Place and cause of death not reported.

DAVID P. SELBY – Capt. Edward S. Swindell’s Rangers.  Private.  born circa 1827.  Receipt rolls for pay shows the was paid May 13, 1863 and carries the remark “killed in action March 4, 1863”.

Wife was Hariet (Harriet) Richards.  Children: George H. (Co. I, 3^rd Art.) married Clarissa Ann Gibbs, John W. (Co. I, 4^th Regt.) married Mary E. Mason, Augustus married Sylvia Ann Watson, and Thomas E. married Elizabeth (Lizzie) J. Williams.

SAMUEL CLARK SELBY – Company I, 71^st Regt. (Jr. Reserves)  Born in Hyde County and enlisted in Beaufort County.  Elected to 1^st Lieutenant on August 27, 1864.  Reported present through October 31, 1864.  Died in hospital at Goldsboro on January 8, 1865 of "illness" caused by hardships of camp life.

Son of Dr. Milton and Jane Elizabeth Clark.  Sibling: Jane Elizabeth Clark Selby Lavender.  He is buried in St. George Episcopal Church Cemetery and it reads: Born: Feb. 15, 1847 & died: Jan. 8, 1875

DAVID W. SERMON/S – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Present or accounted for through April 1862.  Reported absent sick during July-October.  Died in hospital prior to January 1, 1863.  Place and cause of death not reported.

Son of Elijah and Louise Eliza Hudson Sermons.  Siblings: Kellister, Joel, David W. (8 yrs. old in 1850) Elemy, Marietta M. appears to have married John T. Pedrick in 1879.

JAMES ROBERT SILVERTHORN – Company B, 17^th Regt. (1^st & 2^nd Organizations)  Born in Hyde County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Hyde County at age 26 on May 2, 1861.  Present or accounted for until the company was disbanded on March 26, 1862.  Later served in Company B, 17^th Regiment, NC Troops (2^nd Organization).

Previously served in Company B, 17^th Regiment (1^st Organization).  Enlisted in this Company on May 1, 1862, for the war.  Present or accounted for until he was reported absent wounded in May-August 1864, however, place and date wounded not reported.  Reported absent wounded through October 1864.

Son of Jordan and Jane Matilda Peartree Silverthorn   Siblings: David Jordan, married 1^st Hattie Howard, married 2^nd Margaret Berry.  Sally, married Athen S. Tooley.  Stephen Dore married Keron Shallington.

ASA PHILANDO SLADE – Company B, 17^th Regt. (1^st & 2^nd Organizations)  Born in Hyde County and was by occupation a merchant or farmer prior to enlisting in Hyde County at age 25 on May 2, 1861.  Present or accounted for until the company was disbanded on March 26, 1862.  Mustered in as Corporal and was promoted to Sergeant on November 25, 1861.  Present or accounted for until the company was disbanded on March 26, 1862.  Later served as 3^rd Lieutenant in Company B, 17^th Regiment, NC Troop (2^nd Organization).

Previously served in Company B, 17^th Regiment (1^st Organization).  Enlisted in this company on May 1, 1862, for the war. Mustered in as Sergeant and was appointed 3^rd Lieutenant to rank from June 17, 1862.  Present or accounted for until wounded in the left foot at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia on May 19, 1864.  Died in hospital at Petersburg, Virginia on June 10, 1864 of wounds.

LORENZO SMITH – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at New Bern on March 14, 1862.

Age 33 in the Hyde County 1860 census - According to original marriage records, Lorenzo (sometimes seen as "Lindsey") 1^st married Polly Sadler on Jan 21, 1852, 2^nd married Christiana Rew (Rue) on May 11, 1858.  Child: Adelphia Ann Smith (1860-1927) who married James D. Swindell and they are buried in Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton, NC.

EDWIN S. SPARROW – Spencer’s Rangers.   1860 Hyde Co. census states his age as 14.   His name was reported on a bounty roll dated April 4, 1863 as a Private.  Captured near Fairfield, NC on May 20, 1864 and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland where he died February 3, 1865 of "chronic diarrhoea and scurvy".  Rank given on prisoner of war records as Corporal.

Son of Stephen Delemar Sparrow (Co. K, 10^th Regt., (1^st Art.) and Co. G, 2^nd Regt. Engineer Corps) and Mary Ann Elizabeth Spencer Sparrow.  Siblings: Sarah Jane married Samuel Midyette Mann., Stephen Peter (Co. K, 10^th Regt. (1^st Art.) married Laura Blount, Emma married Little Samuel Midyett, Alonza T.J. (Co. K, 10^th Regt., 1^st Art.), and Anjenora (Angie Nora) married 1^st R.  Bennett Sadler, 2^nd William Henry Cox Sr.  This family is closely associated with the Delamar, Blount, and Sparrow families of Beaufort and Craven counties.

DAVID H. SPENCER – Company H, 33^rd Regt.   Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Died on January 1, 1862,  Place and cause of death not reported.

Age 19 in the 1860 Hyde Co. census.  Son of John and Rebecca Midyette Spencer.  2^nd wife, Caroline McGowan.  Siblings: Martha, ½ siblings, Sallie married Edward Swindell, and Dorcas.

ANANIAS SWINDELL – Company B, 61^st Regt.  Previously served as a Private in Capt. Henry Harding's Independent Company, NC Troops.  Transferred to this company on or about September 5, 1862.  Reported present or accounted for through June 30, 1863.  Died in hospital in Charleston, South Carolina on August 12, 1863.  Cause of death not reported.

Age 9 years old in the 1850 Hyde Co. census and in the household with Hardy Swindell who married Julia Meekins in Hyde County in 1868. Also in the household were Nancy Swindell, and Nathaniel Swindell who are likely his brothers and sister since their ages are close to his.  There is a Hardy Meekins who died in 1839. These may be his children or the children of Zebulon Swindell or William Swindell from Beaufort County.  This family was back and forth from Hyde to Beaufort.  Finally, there was a Ananias Swindell who married Clarissa Rose on Dec. 1854, Margaret A. Cutrell on Dec. 24, 1856 and Nancy Jarvis in 1861, however there was no return date but the license was issued on April 4, 1861.

BENJAMIN F. SWINDELL – Company B, 17^th Regt.  Born in Hyde County where he enlisted on May 18, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he died in Swan Quarter on September 20, 1861.  Cause of death not reported.

 Living in household of Benjamin Midyette (Middletown).  20 years of age in the 1860 Hyde Co, census.  No further information.

DAVID F. SWINDELL – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861. Present or accounted for until "run home to Hyde County from the fight" at New Bern on March 14, 1862.  Returned to duty in January-February 1863.  Died in May 1863.   Place and cause of death not reported.

Son of Eramsus, Sr. and Desdemony (Ditsy) Owens Swindell.  Siblings: Erasmus, (Co. F, 33^rd) Nathan R., Angeline, and Dorcas J. married Daniel M. Hodges.  1850 Census.  In household: Ditsy Owens, Mary B. Saunderson.

ERAMUS SWINDELL – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861. Present or accounted for until March-April 1862 when he was reported absent without leave.  Returned to duty in January-February 1863.  Died in hospital at Staunton, Virginia on or about June 13, 1863 of "erysipelas".  25 years of age in 1860. 

Son of Erasmus, Sr. and Desdemony (Ditsy) Owens Swindell.  Siblings: David F. (Co. F, 33^rd), Nathan R., Angeline, and Dorcas J. married Daniel M. Hodges.  Age 24 in the 1860 Hyde Co.Census .

NATHANIEL G. SWINDELL – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Present or accounted for until captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on or about July 3, 1863  Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware where he died on November 8, 1863 of "diarrhoes chronic".

Age 23 in 1850 the Hyde Co. census  and was listed in the household with Hardy Swindell who married Julia Meekins in Hyde County in 1868, Nancy Swindell, and Ananias Swindell who are likely his brothers and sister since their ages are close to his.  There is a Hardy Meekins who died in 1839. These may be his children or the children of Zebulon Swindell or William Swindell from Beaufort County.  This family was back and forth from Hyde to Beaufort.  Finally, there was a Ananias Swindell who married Clarissa Rose in 1854, Margaret A. Cutrell in 1856 and Nancy Jarvis in 1861.  Nath'l. Swindell, age 32, is found in the 1860 Hyde Co. census.

SAMUEL L. SWINDELL –  Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Present or accounted for through April 1862.  Reported absent sick or absent without leave through August 1863.  Company muster rolls dated September 1863-February 1864 indicate that he was "supposed to be dead but, if not, he is absent without leave.  Dropped from the rolls of the company in March-April 1864.

Age 11 in the 1850 Hyde Co. census.  Son of William Glen and Janetta Sawyer Swindell.  Siblings: Emeline married Sylvester McGowen, Sydney married Clarissa Ann Collins, Francis married Fannie Burrus and Daniel died young.  This Swindell family is closely related to Cason Emory Swindell and his father Samuel Lindsay Swindell (brother to William Glen Swindell)

WILLIAM MILES BROCK SWINDELL – Company C, 17^th Regt. & Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Born in Hyde County where he resided as a teacher prior to enlisting in Hyde County at age 21.  Appointed 2^nd Lieutenant to rank from April 27, 1861.  Present or accounted for until appointed Captain on October 16, 1861 and transferred to Company H, 33^rd Regiment, NC Troops.

Previously  served as 2^nd Lieutenant in Company B, 17^th Regiment, NC Troops (1^st Organization).  Appointed Captain on October 16, 1861 and transferred to this company.  Present or accounted for until killed at Cedar Mountain, Virginia on August 9, 1862.  "He possessed high soldierly qualities and was greatly beloved by his company and regiment".

Son of Leroy M. and Charity A. Gibbs Swindell.  Siblings: John O. (Co. B, 17^th, 1^st Org.) Lewis Leroy (Co. B, 17^th 1^st Org – Co. H, 33^rd and Swindell’s Rangers) married Emma M. Tunnell. Edward J. (Spencer’s Rangers), Frederick Dallas married Susan (Sue) Decatur Dudley., and George Israel married Annie Mary Watson.

WILLIAM REDDEN SWINDELL – Captain Edward Swindell’s Rangers.  Private - Receipt roll for pay shows he was was paid May 13, 1863 for the period of January 20-April 30, 1863 and carries the remark: "Wounded and from wound 12^th of March".

Son of Joshua Vanvert, Sr. and Sabra Elizabeth Sanderson Swindell. 2^nd wife was Joanah Lubena Gibbs.  Siblings: Mary, Clarissa, Joshua Vanvert, Jr. married Nancy Elizabeth Selby, Sarah Elizabeth, Martha Jane married John Derosset Selby, and Rebecca.  From 2^nd wife ½ siblings: Alonzo Shanklin married Maggie Bell Sadler, Mary Belle married John Sylvester Cahoon, Nancy Lubena (Bena) married Greely Brinn, Jr., Lewis Baxton married Elizabeth McKinney and Samuel Baskum married Ola Cahoon.

24 years of age in 1850.  Son of Samuel W. and Nancy Ann F. Murray Topping.  Wife: Sarah Ann (Sally) Daniels.  Children: Charles M. married Sarah Elizabeth “Betty” Benson, and Nancy M. married Samuel C. Shavender.  Siblings: Samuel L. married Mary Ann Midyett, Nathan B. married Martha Ann Sadler, Joseph married Clarissa Ann Rose, Sarah A (Sally) married Benjamin F. Satterthwaite.  Also living in the household: Patsey, John W. and Nancy S. Vernelson.  Patsey was Samuel W. Toppings sister with her two children.

NATHAN B. TOPPING –  Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on October 17, 1861.  Mustered in as Private.  Promoted to Sergeant in March-August 1863.  Present or accounted for until killed at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia on ay 12, 1864.  "He did his duty well".

Son of Samuel W. and Nancy Ann F. Murray Topping.  Wife: Martha Ann Sadler.  Siblings: Samuel L. married Mary Ann Midyett, Daniel J. married Sarah Ann (Sally) Daniels, Joseph married Clarissa Ann Rose, Sarah A (Sally) married Benjamin F. Satterthwaite.  Also living in the household: Patsey, John W. and Nancy S. Vernelson.  Patsey was Samuel W. Toppings sister with her two children.

JASPER VOLIVA – Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on December 11, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he died on February 24, 1863.  Place and cause of death not reported.  9 years if age in 1850.

Note: There are two Jasper Voliva’s of that exact age in 1850 in different households.  I see the following as his family.  I may be wrong.    Son of Asa, Sr. (Swindell’s Rangers) and Rebecca ____ Voliva.  Siblings: Thomas, Eliza J., William (Co.I, 40^th 3^rd Art.) married Olly (Ollie) Armstrong, Asa, Jr. (Co H, 33^rd) married Frances Virginia Parisher, Soloman Isaac married Sarah Elizabeth Boomer, and Nancy.

CHARLES A. WATSON – .  Company I, 4^th Regt.  Resided in Beaufort County where he enlisted at age 21 on June 25, 1861, for the war.  Mustered in as Sergeant and promoted to 1^st Sergeant on September 10, 1861.  Appointed 2^nd Lieutenant to rank from December 2, 1861.  Died at Manassas, Virginia on February 20, 1862 of "pneumonia".

10 years of age in 1850.  Son of Samuel Gibbs and Nancy (Sarah?) Boomer Watson.  Siblings: Cassandra Jane married John Bell., Zada D. married Benjamin B. Spencer, William I. (Co.B, 3^rd Art. and Co. F, 1^st Art.), married Charlie S. Archbell, James H. (Co. SAMUEL C. WATSON –  Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted.  Appointed 2^nd Lieutenant on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 1-4, 1863.  Returned to duty prior to July 3, 1863 when he was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  Died in hospital near Gettysburg on or about July 6, 1863 of wounds.

Age 15  1850.  Son of Benjamin and Emma _____ Watson.  Wife: Nancy L. Gibbs.  Children: Samuel C. Watson, Jr. (married in Washington County).  Siblings: Walter J. (Co. K, 1^st Art. and Co. B, 3^rd Art.), Thomas M. (Co. F, 33^rd Regt.) married Mary Ann (Polly) Swindell.  Henry G. (Co. G, 19th Regt., 2^nd Cav.), married Sarah A. Ballance. Robert Franklin (Co. F, 33^rd) married Jane Zyla Meekins.

SAMUEL GIBBS WATSON, JR. – Company F, 33rd Regt.  32 years of age in 1842.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until he died on March 9, 1862 of disease.  Place of death not reported.

Son of William, Jr. and Dinah Bartee Gibbs.  Wife: Sarah G. Swindell.   Siblings: Daniel M., James B. (Company B, 17^th Regt.), Susan B. (Susanna) married John W. Cox.   Joseph (Job) W. married Mary (Midge) Adell, Jabez K. married Julia P. Hill.  Missouri R. married George H. Sermons, and Zada B. married Benjamin B. Spencer.  Brother: William Watson (Co. F, 33^rd Regt.)

**Questions about this lineage.  I have proof that Samuel Gibbs Watson did not die until 1897 and married Nancy Boomer in 1838 and Anne W. Watts in 1862.

Died: Mr. Samuel Watson, Sr. at his home at Aurora on Tuesday evening August 28th, in the 81st year of his age. He was a native of Hyde County, having removed thence and settled many years ago in what was then known as the South Creek section. His remains were brought over to Swan Quarter. Burial was in the new cemetery at Soule Church near Lake Comfort.

Son of William Watson, Jr. and Dinah Bartee Gibbs.  Wife: Sarah Weston.  Children: Joseph Masters Watson (Hyde Militia) (married Elisha Ann Burrus, daughter of Elisha Burrus and Elizabeth “Betsy” Credle), Ann Eliza married 1^st Daniel Credle and 2^nd Charles C. Smith.  Adelaide married 1^st Thomas W. Mayhew 2^nd Rev. Samuel Swann Barber.  Elizabeth, Caroline, and Mary E. (Minnie) married Hiram McClaud.  Brother: Samuel G. Watson (Co. F, 33^rd).

SAMUEL R. WESTON –  Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present of accounted for until killed at New Bern on March 14, 1862.

Son of Benjamin and Francis Boomer Weston.  Benjamin died prior to 1850, and she married Samuel G. Boomer, a relative.  Siblings: John W. (Co. I, 40^th Regt. 3^rd Art.), Benjamin L. (Co. B, 17^th Regt.) married 1st Annie Mann 2^nd Eliza Ann Midyett.  Samuel R., Margaret M., and Frances.  UDC Connection: Liddie Lee Jennette, Middletown, NC Chapter.  [see 1860 Hyde census]

ALEXANDER B. WHITE –  Company I, 4^th Regt.  Resided in Hyde County and enlisted in Beaufort County at age 26 on June 25, 1861, for the war.  Died at Plains Station, Birginia on or about November 6, 1861 of "febris typhoides".

Son of Henry and Dorcas Sermon White.  Siblings: Mary Susan married Jeremiah Farrow Cox. Patsey, Henry (Co. F, 33^rd) and Edward (Swindell’s Rangers) married Zada Jane Gibbs.  Sarah Sermon was living in the household.

DAMERON S. WHITE –  Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present of accounted for until he died in hospital at Lynchburg, Virginia on February 11, 1863 of "pneumonia".

Son of Joshua and Celia A. Swindell White.  Siblings: Joseph H. (Co. B, 17^th) married Ann E. Cozzens and had a son in 1868 (Ransomville, Beaufort County) named after Dameron his brother killed in the war.  Eleanor married Robert Henry Spencer (Hyde County), Celia A. married Lorenzo Dow Swindell (Beaufort Co.)

My records show that Joshua White married Celia/Sela Ann Pugh, daughter of James & Celia (Tarkinton) Pugh,  I have records that Celia Ann Pugh was 1st married to Thomas O'Neal (1758-1826) and after Thomas died she married Joshua white.

Pugh, James Madison Pugh, George Pugh, Cynthia Pugh & Dameron Pugh, Jr., of which James Madison Pugh, George Pugh & Cynthia Pugh are dead & also that Dameron Pugh, Esq. purchased Selea Ann White's share after the death of George Pugh and after the death of James Madison & Cynthia Pugh, Selea Ann White had some right to their share which Right Joseph T. Pugh has purchased, leaving Dameron Pugh, Esq., Joseph T. Pugh & Dameron Pugh, Jr. the entire owners of said land.

Sparrow M. Paine & his wife Seneth M. Paine of Hyde County, sold to Oliver O'Neal of Hyde County, for $30.00, a tract of land on Mt. Pleasant & joining Polly Hall's corner near Samuel T. Douglass' n.e. corner of the land he bought from Israel Brooks and running to the Brooks patent, then to the corner of the land of the heirs of James Pugh, dec'd., which corner was the n.w. corner of a lot which was laid off to Dameron Pugh which fell to him as his right, which he bought from Thomas O'Neal & his wife Selah Ann O'Neal, who was the daughter of James Pugh, dec'd., containing 3 acres. This indenture was made December 26, 1840.

$300 guardian bond signed 29 Aug 1838 by Joshua White, guardian, Israel Brooks & Henry White.
 

HENRY WHITE – Company F, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County where he enlisted on September 9, 1861.  Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia on March 13, 1865 with typhoid fever.  Captured in hospital at Richmond on April 3, 1865.  Died in hospital on April 16, 1865 of disease and/or a gunshot wound.  Place and date wounded not reported.  No further records.

JOHN W. WILLIAMS – 13^th Hyde Militia, Middle Creek.  John W. Williams received his 1^st Lieutenant commission on August 22, 1861 in Swan Quarter

JOHN WILLIS WILLIAMS –  Company H, 33^rd Regt.  Resided in Hyde County. Appointed 2^nd Lieutenant on or about October 16, 1861,  Present or accounted for until killed at or near Gaines' Mill, Virginia on June 27, 1862.

Son of Willis and Dorcas Credle Williams.  Siblings: Nathaniel, Benjamin married Rhoda Helen Gibbs named son after his brother John Willis killed in war., Laura F. married John F. Credle.   It is likely that Laura F. was actually fathered by Wilson Tilman Farrow but still carried Williams’ name.   14 years of age in 1850.

UDC Connection: Virginia Annette Pearce Painter.

NOAH B. WILLIAMS – Company B, 17^th Regt.  Born in Hyde County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Hyde County at age 29 on May 1, 1862, for the war.  Present or accounted for until wounded in the chest at or near Cold Harbor, Virginia on June 3, 1864.  Died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia on June 7, 1864 of wounds.

Son of Julian and Mary Gibbs Williams.  Siblings: John J., age 19 – Eliza, age 14 – Daniel K., age 11 – Susan J., age 5.   17 years of age in 1850.

Total = 117 Known Soldiers from Hyde County who died during the War Between the States.
