| Lafcadio Oliver Twiford [given
name spelled different ways in other records] was born in Kitty Hawk, NC
on Feb, 13, 1893 to Oliver Nelson Twiford & Abia Etheridge
Twiford. He married Ruby Estelle Etheridge (1901-1978) in
1916 and they had Clarence Leland Twiford (1917-1979), Richard
Etheridge Twiford (1920-1967), Herbert Ray Twiford (1923-1978),
and Evelyn Leola Twiford (1929-2012). "L.O." died on Feb. 13, 1962
in Grandy, NC. His obituary ran in the Coastland Times on
Feb, 16, 1962 as follows: Lasceadio Oliver Twiford, 69, a Powells Point store owner, was found dead in his car near Grandy Tuesday after the vehicle ran off U.S. 158 and hit a tree. Highway Patrolman R.I. Weathersbee said that the vehicle was damaged only slightly and that death may have been due to a heart attack. The accident occurred half a mile east of Grandy. Tuesday was Twiford's birthday. A native of Kitty Hawk, Mr. Twiford lived in Powells Point the last 59 years and operated a grocery store there all that time. His late parents were Oliver E. and Mrs. Abigail Etheridge Twiford. He was a member of Powells Point Baptist Church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ruby Etheridge Twiford; three sons: Clarence Leland Twiford, R.E. Twiford and Herbert Twiford of Powells Point; a daughter, Mrs. Melvin Pugh of Norfolk; three brothers: Clarence Twiford and Arthur Twiford of Elizabeth City and William Twiford of Waterlily; 9 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at Powells Point Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Pruitt. Burial was in the church cemetery. [see Find-A-Grave] This store was built by Richard "Dick" Etheridge in 1898 and he moved there. He was the father of Ruby Estelle (Etheirdge) Twiford. Richard Etheridge had previously operated a store at Newbern's Landing. At some point in time it passed to Ruby and her husband "L.O". Twiford. |
