Currituck County Photographs

 Thomas Walker Baxter Album

Thomas Walker Baxter, son of William Ferebee Baxter (Dec. 1, 1803-June 1,1886) and Mahala Hill Sanderlin (Jan. 1823-Feb. 2, 1902), was born in Currituck Co. on Jan. 25, 1862 and died there Mar. 19, 1937.  He married Margaret Adelia "Maggie" Spry, daughter of Edmond Spry (c1835-June 27, 1918) & Adelia Mullen (b. c1830), on Nov. 20, 1889 by P.S.C. Davis, Magistrate.  Margaret Adelia Spry was born Mar. 15, 1870 and died at Moyock, on Aug. 14, 1953 [see obit].  Thomas and Margaret, as well as three of their children, are buried in the Thomas W. Baxter Cemetery in Currituck County.  Thomas & Margaret had 6 known children:

d. Mar. 4, 1979 Dearborn, Michigan
Married Robert VonderGoltz in Currituck Co. on Sept. 22, 1915.  They lived in Detroit, MI in 1917 and in Clarksburg, Harrison Co., WV in 1920.

  2) Nellie Louise Baxter - b. Dec. 24, 1892 Currituck Co.  d. Aug. 11, 1911 Currituck Co.  Buried in the Thomas W. Walker Cemetery

  3) Howard Leland Baxter - b. Apr. 3, 1895 Currituck Co.  d. Leland was killed in an accident on Monday, Sept. 24, 1917 around 4 pm, when a train, the Norfolk & Western "Cannon-ball" express bound for Richmond, hit the car in which he was a passenger. Both he and Earl L. Clayton, also a passenger, were either thrown out of the car, or jumped out----falling in the path of the train. Scott Ferebee of Shawboro, the cars driver, was also badly injured, but survived. The accident happened at Iron Bridge Farm, about 7 miles from Berkley, VA, at the Great Bridge boulevard grade crossing. Baxter and Clayton were said to both live at Currituck Courthouse at the time, but Thelma Morgan (his cousin) said when asked in 1987, that Leland was living with her in Virginia then. That may be where they were headed. She said that as they were bringing his body out of the house Joe Morgan was coming in, and that's how they met.  Leland is buried in the Thomas W. Walker Cemetery in Currituck Co.

  4) Edith Lucille Baxter - b. Jan. 18, 1899 Currituck Co.  d. May 27, 1978 Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., NC.  Married 1st Edwin Ferebee Morgan (1892-1968) on Apr. 28, 1920; married 2nd Frank William "Billy" Selig, Jr. (1924-2001); they divorced in Currituck Co., NC Jan. 15, 1975.

This c1910 photograph appears to include all of Thomas Walker and Margaret Adelia (Spry) Baxter's children. Leland Baxter died in 1917, Joe Morgan married Thomas and Margaret's niece, Grace Thelma Baxter in 1920. "Doc" is Doc Cowell and "BBB" is Burwell B. Bell both friends of Joe Morgan's and appeared in many pictures taken with him. Joe's brother, Edwin Morgan, married Edith Lucille Baxter (pictured here beside her mother). Mary Baxter does not appear to be a sibling of these Baxters---perhaps a cousin? Who are Nancy Moore, Carl B., Will B., and Lonnie Coffee? Carl B. and what appears to be Will "B" may be Baxters, there was a William Ferebee Baxter that was a cousin, son of William J. and Achsa Upton Baxter. Earline was born in 1904 and Louise died in Aug. 1911. Of course, Louise may have been ill at the time of this photo-she is the only one with a coat. Above the heads of several figures on the left is what appears to be 'Liz-Daugh', there was an Ann Elizabeth Baxter Daugherty, born in 1888, who was married to John Daugherty around 1908. Perhaps the 'John' in the foreground? She was the daughter of James B. and Lena Batts Baxter. Genevieve H., to the left of Mrs. Baxter, is Genevieve Holloman, who sang at Lucille and Edwin's wedding.
