GEORGE BURWELL BLANTON CEMETERY This cemetery is located in Cleveland County, N.C., No. 2 Township, on lands of Gilbert G. Ledbetter, and on Sharon-Flint Hill Road on high knoll ¼ mile west of Beaver Dam Creek, 7 miles southwest of Shelby, on north side of present road. The cemetery is about 50 x 50 feet. Owner of Cemetery: Gilbert G. Ledbetter Number of marked graves: 1 Unmarked graves: 30 Earliest marked grave: J. B., d. Mar. 30, 1848 Condition: Covered with briars and bushes* Date of survey: June 22, 1939 Workers: Forest Williams and Anson G. Melton Inscription: "J. B." DC (deceased I supposed), March 30, 1848. Aged 55 years, 10 months, 8 days George Blanton and wife are buried in southeast corner, and his son, Burwell, and his wife in southwest corner with field rocks to their graves. Burwell Blanton was a Revolutionary War Soldier. He was born in 1762 and died in 1860. A Federal Marker is now in process of being erected. Also, money being collected to purchase and erect large monument at these graves. The residence of Burwell Blanton stood some 200 feet south of graveyard. Date by P. Cleveland Gardner: North Carolina Wills, 1760 to 1800 by Col. Fred A. Olds, page 238, Rutherford County Wills: "Burwell Blanton, ) William Blanton, ) Frances Blanton, ) (Supposed to be children of George Blanton, but above named book does John Blanton, ) not state, etc. The will is on file in Rutherford County.) Mary Blanton, ) Peggy Blanton, ) Richard Blanton, ) Ann Bridges ) Catherine Bridges) (These three Bridges were probably grandchildren of said Betsey Bridges ) George Blanton.) "George Blanton entered land on west side of Beaver Dam Creek. He married ELVIRA LEE, and was buried at his old home place." (The Hamrick Generation, page 15, by S. C. Jones.) Clarence Griffin in his history of old Tryon and Rutherford Counties, at page 92, list names of BURWELL BLANTON as a Rev. War soldier, and says that he married ELVIRA LEE. He gives data as follows: "BURWELL BLANTON-Enlisted as private in Capt. Neville's Company, and served in Capt. John Earl's Company, North Carolina Militia in 1783. Born in Virginia in 1762, a son of George Blanton married ELVIRA LEE. Died 1860." NOTE: Jones or Griffin-one of them-is in error as name of wife of George Blanton and Burwell Blanton. I think Griffin is correct in stating that Burwell Blanton married ELVIRA LEE, as the will book shows that George Blanton's wife was named SUSANNA. However, it is possible that Susanna was a second wife of George Blanton. U.S. Census of Cleveland County, 1850, list Burwell Blanton's age 88, and born in Va., which would make his birth in 1762, as stated by Griffin. Burwell Blanton's Will is dated Jan. 3, 1857, probated August Court 1863, filed in office Clerk Supreme Court of Cleveland County, in Will Book No. 1, pages 320 and 321, gives following data: Executors, G. B. Byres and Dr. W. P. Andrews; "My beloved wife mary"; "Burwell Wiley Blanton my youngest son". Witness to will, Nelson Turner and Thomas Williams. A monument has been put at grave with the following inscription: "Burwell Blanton, Pvt. Earl's N.C. Mil. 1860. Born in Virginia 1762." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This cemetery is among the many Cleveland cemeteries included on the Cleveland Count WPA Cemeteries CD, copyrighted 2008, by Ann K.
