Virginia Haire
11/6/97
Searching for any information on CLOUGH/CLOW/CLOE/CLUFF anywhere in North Carolina prior to 1800. A schooner by the name of FAULCONBERG was inventoried in Edenton in 1735. The Captain William CLOUGH had died. It was apparently a merchant ship. Need information or suggestions for researching. No connection has been established to the William CLOUGH who first appeared in Tyrrell County, NC 1801. He married Nancy BRICKHOUSE (DAVENPORT) in 1805. In the 1810 census he was in age 26-45. He was a surveyor and is noted frequently in the Tyrrell County court minutes from 1801 to 1818. His children were bound out as orphans in 1823 indicating both parents were dead. One was Rowan who m. Clarky PRITCHETT, another was William who m. Mary/Polly SWAIN and went to Alabama with her family in 1842. There was a daughter named Mary, no trace of her except a family bible which was presented to Joseph Ashby Spence CLOUGH (son of Rowan and Clarky) as a wedding gift which says from his "aunt Mary SPRUILL". (possibly Mary CLOUGH??) Have traced Rowan CLOUGH descendants to present day. Also the Alabama descendants of William CLOUGH and Mary/Polly SWAIN. No clues as to William's origin, but think he came thru Virginia directly from England.

5/28/97
I am looking for my great-grandfather, William Warren Wells WARD. I am told he came from New Bern or Trenton, N.C. area. These would be in present day Craven and Jones Counties.(A Mr. Claude Banks lived in the WARD Family home in the 70's in New Bern so I am told by an aunt). I do not know who his parents, grandparents, or most of his siblings are. I do know he had two brother named James Martin VanBuren and John WARD. And a sister named Jennie WARD, who married a man named Pryor and lived in New York. William Warren Wells WARD moved from N.C. to Kingstree, S.C. in Williamsburg County. The first census in that county I find him on is 1860 and his wife is Heneoeten Verner (she was a widow from Georgetown, S.C.). Then between 1860 and 1870 he married Betty Duke, who died giving birth. On the 1870 Census his wife is listed as Frances Ella Tharpe (this is my great-grandmother). He was sheriff of Williamsburg County at this time but left this area some time after 1870 when he got into some kind of trouble. I am told that he is buried in the Kingstree cemetary. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. It may be possible that his father is LUKE WARD as there is a Luke Ward listed on the 1870 Census for Williamsburg County, S.C. as a farm labor born in N.C. and he is 84 years old.

Looking for information on the parents of John Caleb PHELPS. His marriage license and death certificate give his father's name as John PHELPS, but the 1860 census for Washington County gives his names as Caleb PHELPS. The wife's name is Elizabeth BRICKHOUSE. Their children were Jane, Joseph, Malissa, Henry and John Caleb. John Caleb PHELPS married Frances BRICKHOUSE of Tyrrell County in 1884, but they resided in Washington County.

We are researching families of: William BEAN, Died: 1782: Washington County, N.C. Lydia Russell BEAN (wife); Died:AFT 1787 Washington Co., NC Sarah BEAN (daughter of William Bean): Born: 1781 Warren Co. TN?? Or NC?? William P. JOHNSON (husband of Sarah Bean) Born: 1777: Warren Co., TN OR is it NC?? Some records indicate Warren Co., TN, but they supposedly lived in the Watauga River area of East Tennessee.....long before Tennessee existed as a state. Where is Warren County, NC located? Is it possible our records should reflect N.C. rather than TN?
