PLACE OF BIRTH:The enumerator placed the state (or country) of birth in this column. If the place of birth was North Carolina, the enumerator placed N. Carolina in the column if it was the first row of the page, or NC if it immediately followed an out of state birth place. For entries other than North Carolina, the enumerator used state/country abbreviations. Otherwise, the enumerator left the field blank, which is assumed to be North Carolina. Blanks have been replace with dashes "-".
