1881 Fire
A marker near the Washington County Courthouse mentions three fires that burned it – 1860, 1862, and 1881. While indexing old issues of the Alamance Gleaner (paper of Alamance County, NC), I found a reference to the 1881 fire. The loss is described as $127, 000, of which there was little insurance.
WCGS Annual Meeting – October 21
At 2pm on October 21, 2009, the Washington County Genealogy Society will host its 2009 annual meeting. The meeting will be held at the Masonic Lodge at 703 NC 32 S.
