New Court Proceedings Page

Taneya | October 4, 2009 | COMMENTS:No Comments »

Whenever I find some spare time, your county coordinator likes to abstract information from old issues of the Roanoke Beacon Newspaper.   This is a personal project I’ve been doing for the past few years and I’ve learned a lot about life in the Plymouth area in the late 1800s.

For my abstracting project I’ve created an online database, but one area I’ve not been consistently including are those notices of court proceedings.  I’ve decided then to transcribe these columns and include them as material for the Washington County NCGenWeb site so they can have a home.

You will now find a new category in the drop down menu on the right side of the page under “Records” called “Court Proceedings.” Check out the first date I’ve added, those of May 5, 1899.  In addition to a long list of criminal charges, we learn that the Baums get divorced and someone was slacking on their transcribing duties for the court.

Index to Guardianship Records

Taneya | August 24, 2009 | COMMENTS:No Comments »

The NC State Archives offers a number of useful lists of their collections.   Among them is a list of Guardianship Records they hold for Washington County.

I’ve linked the PDF file to the Wills & Estates page.  Check the list out, perhaps there are surnames you’re researching.

Welcome to Washington County!

Taneya | August 14, 2009 | COMMENTS:2 Comments »

Welcome to the Washington County, NCGenWeb.   My name is Taneya Koonce and I am your new county site coordinator.  I became the coordinator in August 2009, coming on board behind Steve Davenport.   Steve administers the Washington County Mailing List and has done a wonderful job developing the site over the past 11 years!

The site is still in some transition, so please be sure to click around and investigate different aspects.  Please update any bookmarks that you may have for various portions of the site since I have moved it to the ncgenweb web space.

Washington County is fortunate to have several wonderful database repositories, including a comprehensive death records index that spans 1913-1980 & a marriage index that spans 1851-1920.  Remember, this site relies on your contributions so I do hope you’ll help in continuing to build up this county’s resources.

I plan to use this blog space to notify you of updates to the site, and hopefully, share interesting commentary on the genealogy & history of the county.  Please feel free to contact me at any time should you have questions, comments, feedback, etc.   If you would like to learn more about me, please visit my personal website.
