Shaw University

Shaw University, founded in the 1860s,  holds the distinction of being the first college established for African-Americans in the Southern United States.   Dr. Henry Martin Tupper of Manson, Mass., founder of the school, served as president from 1865-1893.  In 1875, the school was renamed to Shaw Collegiate Institute after benefactor Hon. Elijah Shaw of Wales, Mass.
