Many thanks to Gordon Basnight for yet another great contribution to Tyrrell County genealogy!
The 1891 Tyrrell County tax list is a document that identifies taxable property and its value, the
amount of tax due, and the person responsible for that tax. There were 46 pages listed within
5 townships. Every individual in the county is not listed, but it does give researchers an idea
about families in the county in 1891. This should be helpful since the 1890 Tyrrell County
census is one of the many 1890 census records destroyed by fire.
Included in this transcription is the name of the tax payer, the race, the real property
acreage and its name and description. The Race entry is a combination of four columns
of data devoted to Race (White or Colored) and Poll (White or Colored). Race and age are not
indicated for all entries. Whereas I find personal property data such as the number and
value of mules, jacks, jennies, horses, cattle, sheep and hogs interesting, it has little
genealogical significance, therefore it is not transcribed. Also data about income, state taxes,
pensions, railroads, bank stock, School taxes, county taxes and township taxes is not transcribed.
Blank lines are omitted.
This tax list was easy to transcribe, and should be fairly accurate.
Where questions arose about an entry, the entry is flagged with a "?".
To provide assistance finding a family, an index has been provided.
