This transcription of the 1815 Tyrrell County Tax
List was done by Charles Barnes. Thanks to Chris Meekins, our
Tyrrell County "cousin" who works in the North Carolina State
Archives, for making us aware of its existence.
This list is perhaps the most legible of all the documents we
have transcribed to date. The only difficulty was in discriminating
between the letters "L" and "S." Everything is included in this
transcription except for the first column, which numbered each entry
sequentially. It was only completed on the first and second pages
and was not used thereafter. The pages were not actually numbered.
Page numbering was used in this transcription for identification
purposes. Sometimes the column containing the "cents" for the amount
of the tax was blank. In these cases it has been transcribed as "00."
Entries in this tax list are alphabetical by the first letter of surnames
only, so an index has been provided. In addition, the index captures all
names in the list, assuming that "ditto" means the same name as the previous
name. It also captures all names in entries with multiple names, such as
"William Bodwell for the heirs of Joseph Pledger."
The original document from which this transcription was
made, is located in the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh,
NC. That document is actually a 1816 copy of the actual
lists returned by the local justices.
