1800 Federal Census of Tyrrell County, North Carolina

Introduction and Instructions

The Tyrrell and Washington County Census was the responsibility of Levi Blount, assistant to the Marshall for the District of North Carolina. The census was completed about the 28th day of March 1801. Page 668 from the list of Tyrrell County inhabitants in the census was copied and placed with the Washington County inhabitants. These are assumed to be the inhabitants of a small section of Tyrrell County that became part of Washington County in 1801. Page 668 is included here. This census includes the area now in Dare County as well as Tyrrell County.

  • Whole number of persons in the County of Tyrrell is 3363
  • Whole number of persons in Elizabeth Town is 32
  • Whole number of persons in the Elizabeth Town & Tyrrell is 3395

    (Note: Shallop's Landing, a trading post, was incorporated in 1793 as Elizabeth Town. The name was changed to Columbia in 1801.)

    This census was reported by Head of Family and is broken down in the following manner:

  • Names of heads of families
  • Free white males under 10 years of age
  • Free white males of 10 and under 16
  • Free white males of 16 and under 26, including heads of families
  • Free white males of 26 and under 45, including heads of families
  • Free white males of 45 and upwards, including heads of families
  • Free white females under 10 years of age
  • Free white females of 10 and under 16
  • Free white females of 16 and under 26, including heads of families
  • Free white females of 26 and under 45, including heads of families
  • Free white females of 45 and upwards, including heads of families
  • All other free persons except Indians not taxed
  • Slaves

    Every attempt has been made to enter this data as exactly as recorded by the census taker. Even obvious spelling errors are not corrected. For purposes of readability, zeros have been substituted for blanks in numeric columns.

    Overall the handwriting was excellent, however there were a few cases where is was difficult to decipher a name. As a result, there may be some mistakes. Most questionable names are flagged with a "?". There was some difficulty distinguishing between "e" and "i", and between "o" and "a ". If you find a discrepency between the original document and this data, please let me know so this data can be corrected.
